Lake guardians (Adventures)
The lake guardians are a Legendary trio consisting of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf that reside in the three lakes of Sinnoh: Lake Acuity, Lake Verity, and Lake Valor, respectively. They each connected with the Pokédex holders of Sinnoh: Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl respectively.

Mesprit (Japanese: エムリット Emrit) was the first of the lake guardians to be mentioned. It chose to connect with Diamond because of his strong emotional control.
History
Diamond & Pearl arc
Mesprit appeared in the form of a soul hovering above Lake Verity in a flashback of Diamond's childhood in Dramatic Drapion & Crafty Kricketune I. Later, after finding out that Team Galactic intends to capture the lake guardians for their evil purposes, the Sinnoh Pokédex holders all set out to the three lakes to try to stop them. Diamond was sent to Lake Verity where he faced Mars. When the Galactic bomb had reached its target and blown up Lake Valor, Mesprit had awoken and flew out of its cave. The Emotion Pokémon attempted to escape but was surrounded by Team Galactic's Staravia and was the second to be captured. Despite being captured Diamond was able to hold on to its restraint and snuck into Team Galactic's base.
After placing the trio in individual traps, Cyrus reveals that he intends to create a Red Chain that can capture Time and Space and create a new world. The trio suffered as Cyrus creates the first Red Chain from their gems, afterwards they were given rest. While this happened the Sinnoh Pokédex holders managed to infiltrate the Team Galactic HQ in order to free the lake guardians. They manage to reach the room where the lake guardians are being held and went to their respective Pokémon due to the fog. However they are prevented from freeing them by the Advanced level Grunt's Pokémon. Eventually, they decided to give up their Pokédexes to the Advanced level Grunt's Pokémon, managing to distract them long enough to free Mesprit, Uxie and Azelf. Now freed, the lake guardians make their escape into the air.
Platinum arc
In the Platinum arc, the lake guardians are watching as Saturn, Mars and Jupiter enter the portal Giratina made, glancing at each on what to do next. Later they appear alongside the Advanced level Grunt in the Distortion World, Mesprit returns Diamond his Pokédex, which he had given up during their distraction. The Grunt revealed that he had stolen the Pokédexes only because he had been under the mind control of Sird. He reveals that the three had found him, as to answer his call, knowing that the Pokédexes were exchanged for their freedom. It later participated in the battle against Giratina and Darkrai, which were being controlled by Charon. Mesprit along with several other Legendaries fell asleep due to Darkrai, but were quickly awakened with the help of Shaymin's Worry Seed. Soon enough the battle was over, Uxie and the others had exited the Distortion World through the portal Giratina made to Sunyshore City. After Giratina had left through its portal, the Lake guardians each went back to their respective lakes.
Personality and characteristics
Mesprit understands the concept of justice and has a sense of duty, risking itself to act. It also cares for the other guardians as well, coming to aid them when one had been attacked. Like the others it is usually seen with a serious expression, it has however smiled on occasion. Being the representation of emotions, Mesprit had connected with Diamond, having helped him when he was lost at Lake Verity when he was younger.
Like the others Mesprit is able to levitate and fly at high speeds. Mesprit is able to use its tails as extra limbs, giving Diamond his Pokédex. The lake guardians are connected through an invisible bond, having been said that they were born from a single egg, thus are able to communicate with each other. Mesprit is able to leave its body as spirit without dying and return to the body at will.
Azelf

Azelf (Japanese: アグノム Agnome) is the second lake guardian to be mentioned. It chose to connect with Pearl because of his strong unbending will.
History
Diamond & Pearl arc
In Dramatic Drapion & Crafty Kricketune II, after being dropped on the small island by a Staraptor, Pearl sees the reflection of Azelf in the small pond inside of the island cave which he remembers in Tackling Tangrowth. Azelf appeared as a beam of light, saving Diamond and Platinum from two scientists. Later, after finding out that Team Galactic intends to capture the lake guardians for their evil purposes, the Sinnoh Pokédex holders all set out to the three lakes to try to stop them. Pearl was sent to Lake Valor where he faced Saturn. When the Galactic bomb had reached its target and blown up Lake Valor, awakening Azelf. The Willpower Pokémon attempted to escape by flashing a light but was surrounded and caught by one of Team Galactic's Machamp and was the last to be captured.

In Stopping Sableye, Platinum as a child, had once been to Lake Acuity and saw Uxie, although she had no recollection of such an event in the present. Later, after finding out that Team Galactic intends to capture the lake guardians for their evil purposes, the Sinnoh Pokédex holders all set out to the three lakes to try to stop them. Platinum went to Lake Acuity where she faced Jupiter. When the Galactic bomb had reached its target and blown up Lake Valor, Uxie had awoken and flew out of its cave. The Knowledge Pokémon attempted to escape but was surrounded by Jupter's Tangrowth and was the first to be captured.

It always has its eyes closed as it can wipe out the memory of those who see its eyes. Uxie is able to use its tails as extra limbs, giving Platinum her Pokédex. The lake guardians are connected through an invisible bond, having been said that they were born from a single egg, thus are able to communicate with each other.
