After Diamond learns from Riley that he has only three days to train, he becomes determined to give it his all at Iron Island. As Don and Lax hold the wild Steelix still, Diamond commands Tru to use Crunch. Observing Diamond's battle, Riley realizes that his initial hesitation to give commands to Tru was because he wanted to use a supereffective Earthquake attack, but didn't want to harm his other Pokémon at the cost of the move. Angered by the Crunch attack, Steelix swings its tail at the other Pokémon, then flees from the battle. Riley deduces that the Steelix was the leader of the wild Pokémon that live in the abandoned coal mine, and reveals to a surprised Diamond that even he hasn't been able to defeat it.

The two finish their first lap around the cave, and Riley leaves to wait at the entrance so that Diamond can come to him to heal his Pokémon. Diamond spends the remainder of the three days battling tough opponents in the cave. By the fifth lap, he is wheezing as he staggers to Riley. Despite his exhaustion, Diamond cooks an elaborate meal for Riley and their Pokémon at the end of the day. Riley takes a moment to admire Diamond's positive energy, then stumbles upon a journal. Flipping through its pages, Riley finds that Diamond has been taking notes during his entire time at Iron Island. He is impressed to see Diamond's dedication in overcoming his weaknesses.

Diamond announces that dinner is ready, and Riley joins him for the meal. As they eat, Diamond reveals that despite his training, he wasn't able to help his team get quick enough to make the first move in a battle. To Riley's surprise, several wild Pokémon enter the area, hungry for Diamond’s food. Diamond happily shares his dinner with everyone.

Later that night as the two are camping in a tent, Riley spots Diamond get out of his sleeping bag and head outside. Riley watches as Diamond carves a target into a wall, then motions Tru to attack. As Tru sends leaves flying toward the target, Riley's phone begins to ring. The call is from Byron, who asks about Diamond's progress. Riley tells him that while Diamond is rather weak, he shows kindness and dedication like no other.

The next morning, Riley gives Diamond one final challenge—to locate a Pokémon Egg within the abandoned mine. He urges Diamond to hurry, telling him that wild Pokémon will try to find it first. Diamond and his Pokémon sprint into the cave, but Diamond quickly collides with the Steelix that had attacked him on his first day. The Steelix is weak as it lies on the ground, and Diamond wonders who could have done so much damage to such a strong Pokémon.
