Content from List of items by type pre-merge

Suggestion

I agree with Ferret that they should have individual pages. Maybe have just a list of things, and then link them to the actual page about the item? And also it would be good to list them in alphabetical order. Jayh272416 09:11, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

There are too many items that would take one sentence to explain. I would say make lists according to their division in the DP backpack (i.e. Key Items, Medicinal Items, etc.) and have actual pages for a few certain items like Rare Candy.--Loveはドコ? (talk contribs) 15:14, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

[Individual pages?]

I believe some/all items should have individual pages, as well as this easy-view page. There's a hell of a lot you can say for one item. - Ferret 00:48, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Define items that would warrant more than a paragraph. Evkl 01:02, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I believe a lot can be said of Rare Candy, for one. Definitive places to get particular items too would be especially useful. - Ferret
That's actually not a bad idea. A summary of what they do, where you can get it, what it looks like, there's a lot you can say about any particular item. surskitty
Does anyone really care what the items look like? Can't someone figure out what an Escape Rope looks like, and such? I agree that maybe some of the more important items should have their own pages, but a lot don't need it. Evkl 05:33, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Maybe there should be an extra level of sorting in the Item List: by Bag placement. There could be a separate section for Hold Items, Key Items, and Regular Items. Just a suggestion.CastformRED
Yes, you can see what it looks like in Fr/Lg (and probably emerald too). Also, is it ok to add items one by one, or should they be added section by section? <unsigned comment by User:Coppro 20:29, 15 March 2005 (CST)>
I think this list should stay, but I don’t see the harm in each item having its own page, too, with pictures and in-depth info. The whole point of the Bulbapedia is to fully explain every aspect of Pokémon. I mean, moves get their own pages. -- WikidSmaht 17:07, 5 March 2006 (CST)
I have no objections. However, I can't quite automate the process either. - 振霖T 03:58, 7 March 2006 (CST)
Why not, exactly? Just curious -- WikidSmaht 04:01, 12 March 2006 (CST)
Well, for the moves, abilities and episodes - I had the required information in a database, so it was very simple, but I don't have a database of items. - 振霖T 05:31, 12 March 2006 (CST)
Well maybe someone would volunteer to enter the complete list into a database. -- WikidSmaht 14:42, 12 March 2006 (CST)

[Lemonade?]

In what games is Lemonade avaliable in? Jellochuu¾ 22:34, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Lemonade is in every game, in vending machines... Costs 350, if I remember correctly. They're also on Two Island. surskitty 01:24, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Is it always in Celedon Dep. top floor? Jellochuu¾ 02:52, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
In RBYGSCFrLg, yes, it's there. In GSC, they are also on the top floor of Goldenrod Dept, and RS has them in Lilycove Dept. The guy on Two Island sells them in bulk after you get the Nationaldex in FrLG. surskitty 03:00, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

amulet coin

Amulet Coin...isn't there a similar if not identical item in R/S/E/Fr/Lg? evkl 09:41, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

>Most definately. The Amulet Coin reappears in Gen III. In Hoenn you can get it from your mom. I think you may be able to get it in other versions two, but I'm not sure of the exact location. Speaking of which, shouldn't we list the locations of these items somewhere? If someone desperately wants Blackglasses, shouldn't they be able to come to the Bulbapedia and see where they might be in any version in which they're obtainable? - Zeta
Absolutely. We have to start a campaign to add this. -- WikidSmaht 04:03, 12 March 2006 (CST)

Oh, I can add most of those items. Since I have got Emerald, I can start posting again. I have put up the Amulet Coin so far, and I am still working on the rest of the stat-boosting items. -CastformRED

Item structure definition

There are description of items and there's the list index of items... However there's no documentation on where the item definitions can be found in the game (as there are for the pokemon base data, description and instance, as well as for the moves).

If anyone knows any bit of info (web site, generic knowledge) about them it would be quite helpful. <unsigned comment by User:Red! 08:51, 7 March 2006 (CST)>

The descriptions of the items appear when you buy them in the Poké Mart or look at them in the bag( in Generation III, at least). There are also comprehensive lists with descriptions and locations in the Official Nintendo Player’s Guides by Nintendo Power. A few fan sites like http://www.serebii.net and http://www.pokemonelite2000.com also have pretty good lists, though they don't always get the English-language names quite right. -- WikidSmaht 04:01, 12 March 2006 (CST)

Overhaul

OK, it now includes all the items I know of, though many still need info filled in.
That makes it 62 KB, however... even without most locations and descriptions! So it may be tough for some browsers to edit( according to the warning message). In that case, we probably need to spin game-exclusive lists off into their own articles. Although, the latest version of MediaWiki has fixed this problem on Wikipedia, maybe if Bublapedia’s MediaWiki was upgraded that wouldn’t be a problem any more. Dunno if that’s feasible though.
I have carefully checked, all the items in the first section are available in multiple games( don’t forget PC and PXD). The exception is Mail. Even though most 3rd-gen Mail can only be found in Ru/Sa/E or FR/LG, I included it in the general section because the whole point of Mail is to trade it.
I also listed things like “S.S. Ticket” under each individual game, because, despite having the same name and similar properties, they are obviously different items with different uses.
Everything is sorted into categories, and advanced versions of basic items are placed under the basic version( for instance, Super Repel and Max Repel are under Repel).
Since it took several hours just to get all the items added and sorted, I won’t be filling in the other info for a while, if ever. It would be great if someone else helped. As I mentioned above, the best source for info is the Official Nintendo Player’s Guides from Nintendo Power, but there are some decent fansites also. -- WikidSmaht 04:29, 12 March 2006 (CST)

A browser problem is a browser problem. Upgrading MediaWiki wouldn't change anything - what is more likely is that Wikipedia simply made the warning message invisible. However, I do agree: the page ought to be split up, preferably one article per item. - 振霖T 05:31, 12 March 2006 (CST)
You’re sort of right. I looked into it. But it appears that virtually all the affected browsers have since had upgrades which fixed the problem... see wp:Wikipedia:Article size. So you can probably remove the notice, too. -- WikidSmaht 14:42, 12 March 2006 (CST)

Just looking at this page again... I think this really needs to be broken up somehow, just given that this article's Table of Contents is longer than most other articles in their entirety. Individual articles may be best, or at least group articles for item groups like, say, potions or dolls. --Pie 00:21, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

How about articles for distinct types of items, i.e. hold items, key items (e.g. Itemfinder), balls, in-battle items (e.g. Potion, X Attack), and out-of-battle items (Repels, escape rope) and so on? — SheeEttin {T/C} 14:40, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

This list is too unwieldy

At 69 KB, this list of items is simply too long and, in the case of a majority of the items, severely lacking detail. With the rise of specialized item indexes (see Potion, Poké Ball, Held items), I believe that this page should be turned into an index of the item "sub-pages", if you will. The subpages can then still be linked via a template at the bottom of the article, as is done for Johto towns and cities with Template:Towns of Johto.

Would this change be a rapid one? Absolutely not. But, as the look of the existing list shows, it's a change that needs to be done. --TMF T - C 19:13, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I would agree, given that I've read softcover books which were shorter than this list. I think this is something that needs a group consensus - but if everyone agrees, we should start moving items out of the list once there's another page for them. --Pie 19:35, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
I agree with the point that we should gain consensus for this, but from the comments in other sections above, it seems as if the community would be in favor of a move similar to this. --TMF T - C 21:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
In fact, I'm going to start a project for Items - if for no other reason than to do something about this giant list. --Pie 20:04, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Since nothing has been done on this issue, here's another idea: split this page up into grouped subpages, such as (for the items in multiple games) Miscellaneous items, Recovery items, etc (and for the game-specific items) Items exclusive to Red, Blue and Yellow, Items exclusive to Gold, Silver, and Crystal, etc. If no one has any objections, I'll begin moving info to said pages and convert this page into a "Table of Contents" of all the subpages. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 16:06, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Mail is already a page. --Raijinili 07:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Not sure of the relevance of that in regards to my comments above, but aside from that, regardless of a page existing for mail, this list needs to be broken up and redone as I stated above. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 21:28, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
As an aside, please doublecheck my edits to the Red Orb and Green Orb. --Raijinili 07:24, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Separation blueprint

This list would be broken up as follows:

  • Sections 1.1-1.4 and 1.9-1.10 - Items in multiple games, including links to the articles for sections 1.5 to 1.8
  • Section 1.5 - Recovery items, including a link to Potion
  • Section 1.6 - Enhancement items (working title)
  • Section 1.7 - Held items (article needs completing)
  • Section 1.8 - Tools (working title)
  • Section 2 - Items exclusive to Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow (working title)
  • Section 3 - Items exclusive to Gold, Silver, and Crystal (working title)
  • Section 4 - Items exclusive to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald (working title)
  • Section 5 - Items exclusive to FireRed and LeafGreen (working title)
  • Section 6 - Items exclusive to Pokémon Colosseum (working title)
  • Section 7 - Items exclusive to Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness (working title)

Reorganizing

Revisiting this monster from an organization standpoint, I'm considering the following.

  • Moving the content of items to List of items
  • Turning the article "items" into a redirect to "item"
  • Making the item article about a general explanation of what items are, details of the role of items in game, etc.
  • Linking to the list of items in the item article, as well as the articles with details about the different item groups

Seems to me like the best way to manage this issue. Thoughts? --Pie ~ 18:05, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

...being that it's a tad late replying, how about we kill the list of items, instead having a list of types of items, like Held items (which itself should be divided up into type-enhancing, evolution-inducing, incense, Pokémon-specific, mail, and whatever else it needs to be, so as to be short enough to be manageable like Potion is), key items of the different generations, and all that? After all, in the List of Pokémon, it's not like we have every list of Pokémon spread out there, we keep them in their individual articles for the Sinnoh, Hoenn, Johto, Kanto, and so on Dexes, and just list them out. Moving this to "list of items" would then give us the ability to put it in the same kind of format as the LOP.
My proposal'd look like so:
  • List of status healing items
    • Potion
    • Drink
    • Status ailment healing items
    • Revive
    • Ether
  • List of Poké Ball varieties
  • List of key items
    • Generation I
    • Generation II
    • Generation III
    • Generation IV
  • List of held items
    • List of type-enhancing held items (Charcoal, Mystic Water)
    • List of battle-affecting held items (King's Rock, four weather rocks)
    • List of evolution-inducing held items (Oval Stone, Electrizer)
    • List of incenses
    • Berries
  • List of items by index number
    • Generation I
    • Generation II
    • Generation III
    • Generation IV
  • Other
  • Vitamin
  • Repel
...or something like that. I'd make it fit to be like the LOP is, so I might put Repels and Vitamins in an "Other" category. I do think, however, that grouping Key Items by Generation would work better than having a list where there's Gen I only ones, and ones that were in Gen I and II, and ones in II and III, and ones in II alone... that'd just be crazy.

Thoughts? --TTEchidna 07:40, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion: Mass Re-organization

Currently, I am going through the whole list offline, and trying to compress the info on this page as much as possible. I have made some changes to the format which I haven't implemented yet, because I really want to get people's opinions on it:

1: For most listings, put items in table.

e.g.: Trainer Tools (Bag, Trainer Card, etc.) table with headings showing item, location gotten, and generation obtainable)

2: For listings that have a quite detailed page, replaced with a link to said page.

e.g.: The section "Type Boosters" replaced with "See Type-enhancing item for more info"

3: Arrangement of items in first section into DP-type categories, with sub-categories allowing for special types of items, like those that are useful for sale only (Nuggets).

 e.g.: Items -> Type-enhancing item, Valuable item
       Medicine -> Drink, Vitamin
       Poké Balls

4: To assist in finding items, small descriptions will be added to each sub-category. Not a lot of info is needed for some of them because of the high detail of the item pages which they lead to.

e.g.: Valuable item: Items which have no purpose other than to be sold.
Type-enhancing item: Hold Items which enhance moves of a certain type.

Including the above, I'll update the item pages that they lead to in case they need the prices added. Also, may place items on those pages into tables where needed.

Now, I really stress that I don't want to make any big changes to the article until I can get some feedback on my planned change. Is there any part that wouldn't be recommended? Can some parts be changed? Or should I just be bold? CastformRED 07:18, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Just because that would take forevere I am going to suggest you use Alt + F and Search for what you need to find.Crystal Lucario 11:02, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, it's not about my convenience. I have already started work on it, as I said. I suggested doing this because even with the large amount of items on the page, there still isn't detailed info on all the items, and there are several that are missing. I could have added in the missing items, but that would just add to the page size. The way I suggested would make it more like a mini-directory leading to the appropriate detailed item page, like the examples given above. But still, do you or anyone else have any suggestion to improve this type of view? CastformRED 13:40, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

There's already a mass overhaul of the article planned once we know what to do with the Escape Rope and Ragecandybar, and subsequently getting rid of Template:I. Escape Rope is more than likely going to have to get its own article since it doesn't fit into many of the existing item categories --Shiningpikablu252 15:20, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Well actually, I was looking through the pages linking to this one and noticed the Escape Rope and Ragecandybar, and I had an idea for the Ragecandybar. How about, if on the Mahogany Town page, a section is created for the special store/Mart in the town, and the disambiguation page for Ragecandybar leads there instead? The shop itself is not significant enough to be in its own page, as its main claim to fame is that it carries the Ragecandybar. This could solve the problem of having a page for Ragecandybar while also showing its unique location. I already uploaded a screenshot of the shop if needed. CastformRED 22:57, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Is it really necessary to have all Secret Base/Room decorations in here? I say we branch those into their own article. It would reduce the list largely by number of items. If that's not enough, then there needs to be branching into common items between versions such as a Potion or Full Heal which appear in every single game so far. Gywall 14:29, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Definition

Should we update our definition of item or should we stick to what we have right now? I'm having problems categorizing new objects from the Diamond and Pearl games. Should things like Spheres, Traps, Poffins, Goods (Underground), Treasures (Underground - can be placed in the bag but cannot cannot be picked up by players), Seals, and Accessories (contest) be considered as items even if those objects doesn't fit our current definition of an item? Please advise me since I have added Generation IV items in my list of work as part of my commitment to Bulbapedia's ItemDex Project. - Micael

Gen. IV

Wrong. Either Gen IV does not have an Itemfinder, the Dowsing machine counts as an Itemfinder, or you get it after the Elite Four, but I can find all hidden items without it.

Please correct me, or change the page. I am unsure what to put, so can someone else make the change?

Portable Pokemon Center item?

I seem to recall when I first started playing Pokemon Platinum that I talked to a vendor who was selling an item that was supposedly synonymous to a portable Pokemon center. Recurring Items

There are also four Star Pieces hidden in various spots inside Iron Island in Pokémon Platinum, of which a few will regenerate daily (at midnight, it seems, according to the tests I've performed). Items found after battle in Gen VI

In some caves in Gen VI you can find an item after a battle if you break a rock that appears in the background (I've done this using Surf, so I assume that it takes a multi-target move). More research should be done on this phenomenon though: does it only occur in caves (victory road and the connecting cave are the only places I've noticed it happening so far)? Which caves/areas does it occur in? What items can be found? What exactly are the requirements for breaking the rock? Are there other background objects that can be broken and what happens if they are?

Also it seems like this page should only contain overview information on this phenomenon (which I just added). Should we make a separate page for this? If so, what should it be called? I'll nominate "Background Objects" as the name for the phenomenon but if someone suggests a better name we should use it. I'll create a new page with whatever name in a couple of days if nobody objects.

Pmawhorter (talk) 19:00, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

It also works on trees, sandpiles, rocks, grass, snowpiles and ice crystals. Each variation takes different moves to get the item. For example, whilst Surf works on stalagmites, it won't work on Berry Trees. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 19:05, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. Do you have info on the variety of background objects that appear and which moves interact with which objects? Pmawhorter (talk) 02:18, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

I agree with Pmawhorter though maybe call them "Background items" to be more consistent. So far I've only found damp rocks using surf and muddy water on stalagmites, but there seems to be a lot more so I think a new page with a summary table would be good. Ackers.22 (talk) 13:03, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Recurring items split

Maybe instead of "Recurring items" it'd be "Recurring item", or "List of recurring items". I don't know. Thoughts on the title?

Anywho, the current section is a pretty horrible presentation. Basically any improvement on that presentation will make it longer, and it's the sort of thing that can stand very well on its own page. The section here can be reduced to a simple overview while the new page contains all the different items and better details for them.

I've currently got code for a good visual presentation of most of the recurring items, including gifts. It's at least as complete as the section here currently is (content-wise; I've not got the presentation for everything up to my standards at the moment).

Overall thoughts? Tiddlywinks (talk) 04:42, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

I'd be all for this should it occur, i like the current page idea you have going, I'm not a fan of pages of tables though, but in some cases it's unavoidable. --Spriteit (talk) 14:24, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

FRLG Hidden Item Weirdness

Does anyone have any info on the hidden items in FRLG that don't appear until later on? It makes finding the hidden items difficult because on the list here and other places I don't know if the list is just wrong or the items appear later. Items I know do not appear include the tinymushrooms at the end of mt. moon and the items in both underground paths. The Trigger for them seems to be Completing S.S. Anne for the first two and Either the game corner or Lavender Tower for the East-West Underground tunnel. There have been numerous instances of items not being where they are noted, but at this very moment I was trying to get the star piece on outcast island. Been wondering about this forever. - unsigned comment from Loumast (talkcontribs)

Adding a "Repels" Category Page

This might need to be somewhere else, but I couldn't find somewhere else this would be better posted

Why does the "Repels" link only link to the base Repel? It seems like the point of that link is to go to a page categorizing all "Repels", with links to the base Repel, Super Repel, and Max Repel (and any other repels I might be forgetting). Linking it as you have now seems to imply there is only one type of Repel, which is very misleading.

"Field Items"

There should be section for "Field items" in the list. It's a term that's been in mainstream use for several years to describe items that can only be used in the overworld from the Bag, and usually have no battle-specific or held-item purposes. Field items (off the top of my head) would include items such as:

  • Escape Rope
  • Repels
  • Lures (LGPE)
  • Black and White Flute

I found out when I was playing Pokémon Shield, when I use a Potion on my Pokémon at full health, it will have no effect and my turn will be skipped. But in Emerald, trying to use a healing item on a Pokemon when it will have no effect in battle will say "It won't have any effect" and your turn won't be skipped.
