User:Anzasquiddles/List of Indonesian Pokémon names (fanmade)
DISCLAIMER: These names are not official. This is just something I'm doing for fun.
Welcome! This is my personal project, where I try to come up with Indonesian names for Pokémon. With more and more Pokémon media being translated into Indonesian (such as mobile games and TCG), I think it's a bit weird that they still use English Pokémon names instead of original Indonesian names.
Notes
- All names must fit the 12-character limit for Latin alphabet languages.
- Some names I decided to keep the same as, or transliterate from, the Japanese/English names. These names are usually for really iconic and well known Pokémon (eg. Pikachu), or legendary/mythical Pokémon (eg. Raikou). Or I just think the names do not need changing.
- Generally speaking, if a Pokémon's English name is the same as its Japanese, I will go and use the Japanese name as well.
- I will put notes on some of these entries, basically stating my opinions, putting alternate names I've considered, and whatnot.
Pronunciation guides
Note that I am not a linguist, so these are just approximations of what I think they sound like when compared to general English vowels.
- Vowels: Vowels are generally consistent (with one exception)
- "A" makes a roughly open /a/ sound (as in "art").
- "I", "Y" make an /i/ sound (as in "bit", "rhythm").
- "SY" generally makes a "sh" or /ʃ/ sound.
- "U" makes an /u/ sound (as in "book", "full").
- "O" makes an /o/ sound (as in "rob").
- "E" can make either a mid-front /e/ sound (as in "bed") or a schwa /ə/ sound (as in "berg"). It isn't generally indicated which pronunciation will be used, so figuring out which is which can be a trial and error thing. Sometimes the different e's are marked, with acute e ("é") for the mid-front /e/ sound (eg. "Pokémon"), and circumflex e ("ê") for the schwa /e/ sound.
- "C" always makes a "ch" or /t͡ʃ/ sound (as in "cheese"). Example: Cabai (pronounced "cha-bai").
- "G" is always a hard G. (Soft G is just a J in disguise, anyway.)
- Exceptions to these: Loanwords in which the letters are pronounced differently (eg. "C" may make a "k" sound or an "s" sound if it's part of a loanword). I generally try to make sure all my Pokémon names are written as how they are pronounced, though.

Also, incidentally, C.Ezra.M pointed out that the name also contains a corruption of langsam (German for slow). I didn't intend it, but that's a fun coincidence!

This name is not coined by me! It was actually created by the official localizers. Transliteration of English name
|
The Indonesian coelacanth (the one with the brown coloration Relicanth most closely resembles) is locally known as "ikan raja laut", literally "sea king fish". Something about Relicanth's Japanese name that I have never seen anyone talk about: it sounds so... weird thanks to character limits. The intended name was most likely going to be ジーラカンス Jīrakansu (like シーラカンス Shīrakansu (Coelacanth) but you replace the シー shī with ジー / 爺 jī, meaning "old man"); however, since at the time Japanese Pokémon names were limited to 5 characters, the name got shortened to ジーランス Jīransu. Now, why they transliterated it to Glanth (like G-Lanth), of all things, is a mystery I don't think I will ever know the answer to. Also, an alternate name I came up with that ended up unused was Dahulakanth, derived from dahulu kala (Indonesian for "a long time ago") and English coelacanth. I ended up scrapping it because it is an incredibly dumb name. Whew, that's a lot of paragraphs talking about Relicanth of all things. Anyway!

"Is it pronounced with a hard C or a soft C?" Neither. It's pronounced with a /ch/ sounding "C" (like "Ar-chay-us"). That way, nobody is happy :D But really though, pronounce the C however you want. When adapting these names to Indonesian, I usually try to change pronunciation traps (things like soft G or C, or unintuitive spelling in general) so that they are more easier to pronounce, but I'll make an exception just for this one. |

I was really considering "Yungarang" or "Yangarang" for this mon to match the "young" in its Japanese and English name, but I ultimately decided against it to avoid confusion with Zangarang (Zangoose; see section "Generation III"). 0766 | ナゲツケサル Nagetukesaru |
Passimian | Lemupar |
|
An earlier name I came up with for this mon is Oprimata, derived from oper (Indonesian for "[to] pass (esp. in sports), [to] hand over, [to] transfer") and primata (Indonesian for primate). It's basically a less creative, word-for-word translation of the English name. I also came up with Lempur (same etymology as the current name), but I ended up not using it because it has the same name as a village in Jambi.

Update 2024-06-20: Originally I went with the name Koalelap for this mon, from koala and lelap (Indonesian for fast asleep). I changed it to the current name because I thought it's way cuter.

Commonly seen in the verb form eg. "melayang". It also forms the Indonesian word "layang-layang" (kite). Interestingly, "layang" is also a Javanese word for letter.

Pronunciation guides: "Rema" is said with the mid-front /e/ (like in "ready"), but "remang" and "remah" are said with the schwa /ə/ (like the "ra" in "generally"). An alternate name I had considered was "Rikmapasir", from "rikma" (synonym for "rema" (hair), also Javanese).

Genuinely surprised at how quickly I was able to come up with a name for this thing (only a day after it was revealed). Update 2023-09-13: Nevermind. I really thought I was being clever by naming this guy after Sinistea instead of Polteageist like in the official material.
1013 | ヤバソチャ Yabasocha |
Sinistcha | Mautcha |

I originally came up with this name for Poltchageist (see above), not knowing it has a Sinistea-like evolution. Whoops!

Hydrapple |
2024-06-17: I only put this entry for Hydrapple here even though I haven't thought of any name ideas for the Applin line yet, because today I found out that the official Indonesian localization translates the "syrpents" of Hydrapple as "Boah", derived from boa (type of snake) and buah (Indonesian for fruit). And I just think that's the cutest name ever for these things.
