Animation is a form of art in which multiple pieces of still pictures are used to form a visual illusion of a moving image. The term anime is used to refer animation originating from Japan, while outside Japan, the term may be used to refer to any sort of animation originally produced in Japan. The Pokémon franchise uses animation in multiple ways, ranging from entertainment to advertising. Within the fandom, "the Pokémon anime" or "the anime" is used to specifically to refer the main anime focusing on former protagonist, Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu, however it may also be used to refer to multiple forms of Pokémon animated media.

Animation is used beyond visuals in the franchise, and is highly important to not only Pokémon-themed cartoons, but is used within the videos games as well. The video games typically having animated intros, cutscenes, cinematics and visuals to carry story telling or to enhance gameplay. Animation is also used within battle, intended to make gameplay more entertaining and visually interesting for the player, giving feedback on their inputs.
