Goldenrod City has been overrun by Team Rocket. It is up to you to liberate the Radio Tower and finally put an end to their schemes!

The quiet mountain retreat known as Blackthorn City lies isolated in the northeast. The main attraction is the Blackthorn Gym, the final Gym in the region. North of the Gym is Dragon's Den, a training ground for Dragon specialists. On Saturdays, Santos of the Week Siblings can be found here.

Time for a Trade
The girl in the eastern house is looking to trade. She offers her Dodrio in exchange for a female Dragonair. The Dodrio arrives holding a Smoke Ball.

The Move Tutor House
1F
There are four people in the southwest house, all of which provide valuable services regarding a Pokémon's moves.
A Rocket Grunt blocks the stairs to 2F. His orders are to allow only people dressed in Team Rocket's uniform to pass.
* Move Deleter: He can help a Pokémon forget any move, even HM moves.
* Move Maniac: In exchange for a Heart Scale, he helps a Pokémon remember any move it had previously forgotten.
* Grandma Wilma: When shown a Dragon Pokémon that is happy with its Trainer, she will teach it the ultimate Dragon-type move, Draco Meteor.
* Ultimate Move Tutor: He teaches any fully-evolved starter Pokémon the ultimate move of its type; Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon.

Blackthorn Gym
Goldenrod Tunnel
Going Undercover
Visit Goldenrod Tunnel's Photo Booth to find another Rocket Grunt. He assumes that you are one of the new members recruited for the Radio Tower mission. They apparently ran out of uniforms, so he decided to "borrow" one from the studio. In an instant, you are dressed as just another Rocket Grunt!

DPcity
Because of your disguise, the Rocket Grunt mistakes you for a new recruit and moves aside. Just as you are about to climb the stairs, Silver rushes in. He yells at the guard, demanding that the group stop harassing people. He recognizes you a moment later, and criticizes you for wearing the uniform. His words reveal you as an imposter, and you abandon the disguise. Realizing his mistake, the Rocket Grunt immediately draws you into battle.
DPcity

The Blackthorn Gym uses mostly Water and Dragon Pokémon. Waters resist Ice and Fire attacks and are weak to Electric. Dragons take less damage from Grass, Fire, Water, and Electric moves, and are more vulnerable to Dragon- and Ice-type attacks. The floor has become unstable due to the lava bubbling underfoot, forcing your lead Pokémon to return to its Poké Ball. Reaching the Gym Leader requires crossing the lava on movable platforms. These platforms each have a blue tile, which causes it to rotate, and two arrow tiles, which move it in the respective direction.
Defeated, he rushes upstairs to warn the others. Silver finally understands the reason for your disguise, but dismisses it as a weak person's idea. He is happy to let you handle Team Rocket, as he is more interested in finding and defeating Lance. He warns you that he will be looking to defeat you next, and leaves.

Clair's Gyarados can lower its opponent's Attack with its Intimidate Ability. It cannot make good use of its Twister and Dragon Pulse moves due to its lower Special Attack, but Bite builds on its already-high Attack. Both of her Dragonair can inflict paralysis with Thunder Wave, before executing strong moves like Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, and Aqua Tail. 25 from the Goldenrod Department Store deals serious damage to Gyarados, while 14 from the Goldenrod Department Store or 72 from Ice Path can help against her two Dragonair. Her Kingdra's only weakness is Dragon-type attacks, and can beat its target down with the powerful Hydro Pump, Dragon Pulse, and Hyper Beam attacks. Unless your Pokémon happen to know a Dragon attack, you likely have to hammer it with strong, neutrally effective moves.
3F
Battle another two Rocket Grunts and Scientist Garett. A Card Key is required to access the eastern area, so take the western stairs instead.

Clair refuses to accept defeat. She claims that you are still not ready for the Pokémon League, and directs you to take the "Dragon-master challenge". There is a small shrine in the Dragon's Den, a large cave located underneath the city. If you can reach it, she will give up the Rising Badge. Bring along a Pokémon with Surf and Whirlpool, and cross the lake behind the Gym.

45 is a rugged route leading down from the mountains. The ravine forces the path to split and recombine multiple times, and many small ledges prevent northbound travel. The east entrance to Dark Cave is located just outside of the city, and the route eventually reaches a small lake, where it turns west toward 46.

Dark Cave (optional)
Though Dark Cave was first accessible from 31, but ledges prevented players from exploring the whole cave. The moves Surf, Strength, and Rock Smash are needed to fully explore the area. This cave is the only location where wild Dunsparce can be found, and one of the few places where wild Wobbuffet can be found.

Silver appears again a short distance from the entrance. He followed you, hoping that you would lead him to Lance. Since he was never able to find him, Silver decides to defeat you first instead.

Rival Battle 4
Each of Silver's Pokémon has grown 10 levels since the previous battle. His Zubat has since evolved into Golbat, and the Pokémon that he took from Elm's lab—either Totodile or Chikorita—has now evolved into its final form. His team includes one new addition, a Sneasel. As a Pokémon, it takes massive damage from Fighting moves.

Blackthorn side
Turn west, then head south. Collect the hidden Elixir, then surf south across the lake. Grab the Revive from the southeast platform, then go west to reach 54. Head north across the lake and follow the path around to the southwest. Speak to the man in the northwest corner to receive the BlackGlasses, then head south and jump the larger pair of ledges. Check the dark rock for a hidden Hyper Potion, and step through the doorway to the Violet side.

Violet side
Defeated, he wonders aloud if what Lance told him about not treating his Pokémon properly is true, but refuses to give up on becoming stronger.
A Potion and a hidden Poké Ball can be found to the west, and a Black Flute is located to the south, past a small pool of water. Use Surf or Rock Smash to travel eastward to a narrow tunnel, then use Strength to move the boulder. Use Rock Smash again to reach the northeast corner, and the Hyper Potion not far to the south. Jump the ledge and inspect the east wall for a hidden Max Ether. Collect the Full Heal to the south, and the Dire Hit to the southwest, before exiting to 46.

Route 46 (optional)
The rugged mountain road of 45 comes to an end in 46, as the mountains give way to smaller cliffs. To the west, a small grove of Apricorn trees grows in a secluded field. Head south through the gate, and cut through 29 to return to New Bark Town.
The Shifting Shutters
After Silver leaves, there are two Rocket Grunts nearby. Defeat them and pick up a Full Heal to the west. Collect the Smoke Ball from the southwest corner, then turn your attention to the three buttons on the nearby wall. Each of these buttons controls a different group of shutters to the south. To reset the puzzle, either flip each switch again or leave and re-enter the room. Press the blue one on the left, then the green one in the middle, and then the red one on the right. After exiting the maze, defeat the female Rocket Grunt and pass through the double doors.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #; roundy; border: 5px solid #;"
Warehouse
Go north to reach an Ultra Ball, then follow the winding hallway past the first Rocket Grunt to reach a Max Ether in the southeast corner. Battle a second Rocket Grunt in the northeast, then detour up the nearby stairs; this leads to a blocked-off area in the Department Store's basement and an Amulet Coin. Continue westward to fight a third Rocket Grunt. Pick up 82 in the interior room, then speak to the Director. After hearing about Team Rocket occupying the Radio Tower, he begs for your help and gives you a Card Key. This card unlocks the shutter on the tower's third floor. Climb the northeast stairs again and take the elevator up from the basement.

Radio Tower
With the Card Key in hand, it is time to defeat Team Rocket once and for all!

Dragon's Den
Only select Trainers can enter the Dragon's Den, a place for training and meditation. The Dragon Master lives inside the shrine on the south side of the cave. Be sure to enter with no more than five Pokémon!
3F
Swipe the Card Key through the slot near the shutter. Defeat the single Rocket Grunt on the other side and take the stairs to the east side of 4F.

4F (East)
When you approach the stairs to 5F (East), Proton recognizes you as the one who interfered with Team Rocket's operation at Slowpoke Well. He warns against making him angry, but since you keep getting in the way, vows to show the full power of a Rocket Executive's wrath.

Exit the elevator and speak to a final Rocket Executive, Archer. He reveals the details of their plan: to take over the radio station and announce their return. Their hope is that hearing this broadcast will bring their leader, Giovanni, back from his solo training so that he can lead them to regain their former glory. He refuses to let you interfere any further, and draws you into battle.

Climb down the ladder to the main cavern. Fight Ace Trainer Kobe, then collect the hidden Revive to the west and the Calcium to the southeast. Surf west to battle Ace Trainer Piper and find a hidden Max Potion. Swim southwest to fight Twins Clea & Gil, and pick up the Max Elixir nearby. Use Whirlpool to calm the waters, then sail east past the shrine before turning north. Grab the Dragon Fang from the east side, then backtrack and enter the shrine.

Shrine
Conceding defeat, Archer formally disbands Team Rocket, just as Giovanni did before him. The Rockets flee the building, and the Director returns a moment later. He exclaims that your courageous actions have saved Pokémon nationwide, and rewards you with a Rainbow Wing / Silver Wing. He explains that there used to be a different tower at this site, but it was old and unstable. During demolition to make way for the new Radio Tower, this gleaming feather was found at the top.
The Dragon Master realizes right away that you were sent here by Clair. He gives a short test to determine your attitude towards Pokémon. Avoid the negative answers to pass the test.

He explains that according to a friend of his from Cianwood City, having this feather allows the holder to meet a certain Legendary Pokémon. The Rainbow Wing allows the holder to climb the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City, while the Silver Wing grants passage to the deepest cave in the Whirl Islands. As he is about to leave, he suddenly remembers another detail from his friend: even with this feather, the Legendary Pokémon will not appear to just anyone. He wonders if there could be another item that triggers its appearance.

He then leaves for his office, leaving you free to return to Mahogany Town. As you exit the tower, speak to DJ Mary on 4F (East) for a BrightPowder, and the girl on 3F to get 11.

Clair appears, expecting you to have failed. She refuses to believe the truth, until the Dragon Master steps in. He orders her to accept her defeat, and threatens to tell Lance of these events. She hurriedly awards you the Rising, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon and enables the use of Waterfall in the field. The Master scolds her, and she leaves quickly. Speaking of waterfalls, the Master mentions a huge waterfall, deep in the Whirl Islands, where Lugia is said to rest, but reaching it requires a Silver Wing...
Mahogany Town
With Team Rocket gone, the souvenir shop's owner and her granddaughter have returned to reopen their store. The shady salesman who blocked the way eastward to 44 has disappeared, as well.

As you head to the exit, you find Clair waiting on the north shore. She hands over 59, and tells you to return to New Bark Town and take 27 to reach the Elite Four (Kanto).

Mt. Mortar (optional)
Route 44
Mt. Mortar is a tall mountain that looms over northern Johto. Inside is a large network of caves, and even a giant waterfall. Surf, Strength, Waterfall, and Rock Climb are required to fully explore the area. The Karate King from Saffron City is training on the lowest floor; venture inside with an empty party slot to receive Tyrogue of his prized Pokémon.

44 is a pleasant mountain path that links Mahogany Town to the Ice Path. It is filled with abundant greenery, and springs that feed into several large ponds. The only patch of tall grass lies tucked away between two of these ponds.

West, East Entrances
The Clumsy Traveler
Entrance
Backtrack and walk across the rocky ridge. There is a man standing to the east; when you approach, he asks if the item that you just found was an HM. He claims to be the one who dropped it, but asks that you keep it. Continue on and climb down the northeast ladder.
Both the west and east entrances lead behind the waterfall to the Lower Cave. A hidden Hyper Potion can be found near the west entrance.

Lower Cave
BF (North)
There are two items that can be obtained before exploring most of the Lower Cave. The ladder atop the stairway to the west leads to an Ether. The ladder atop the stairway to the east, near Poké Maniac Harrison, leads to a Revive.
There are four boulders scattered around this part of the cave, and each one must be dropped through a different hole in the floor to form a path on the ice below. Go north and loop around the northwest corner to find the first two boulders near the middle of B1F.

Northwest of Poké Maniac Harrison is a boulder; move it aside to reach a hidden Max Repel and continue north. A dead-end to the west leads to an Ultra Ball, and a Max Potion can be found among a group of stalagmites to the east. Turn east, then south to fight Super Nerd Markus and reach an Escape Rope. Climb the large stairway to the upper level on the room's east side. Collect the Nugget to the north, then use Rock Climb to scale the nearest cliffside. Follow the path to the west side, scale the cliffs, then head south. Use Rock Climb once more to reach a Protector, and a Rare Candy hidden nearby. Return to the upper level on the east side, and scale the cliffs to the south. This leads to a Full Incense and a hidden Nugget. Take the southeast doorway to the Entrance, then take the upper exit to reach the Dubious Disc outside.

Center Entrance
Entrance
Climb down the ladder near the center entrance to the Basement.

Basement
Of the two boulders in the southwest area, begin with the southernmost one. Use Strength to maneuver it around the scattered rocks and drop it down through the southwest hole. Backtrack a bit and move the second boulder northward, so that it sits next to the lone stalagmite. Leave it here for a moment and head to the southeast area to find the third boulder. Move it to the southeast hole, then continue northward. Push the fourth boulder to the north-central hole, then go west to finish moving the second boulder to the northwest hole. With all four boulders cleared, climb down the northeast ladder.
Surf east to the southeast corner to reach a Full Restore. Swim northeast to get a Max Ether, then west for a Hyper Potion. There is a boulder farther to the west, but the narrow pathway prevents northward travel. Surf southward and pick up the PP Up near the ladder. Cross the water to the southwest corner, and inspect the wall to find a hidden Ultra Ball. Surf north for a Carbos, then jump the ledge to the southeast and climb the ladder back to the Entrance.

Entrance
B2F (West)
Surf north and use Waterfall to scale the cascade, and enter the doorway to the Upper Cave.
The four boulders from the floor above have fallen in a spiral shape that grants access to the ladder in the middle of the chamber. Before continuing on, there are several items that can be found nearby, including a Max Potion. To reach the middle area, begin in the northeast corner and slide westward across the ice to the first boulder. Move in a clockwise direction from here to reach the patch of clear ground in the center, and collect the Full Heal before climbing the ladder.

Upper Cave
B3F
Surf west to reach a Rare Candy in the southwest corner. Head back east, past the platform with Super Nerd Hugh, and swim north across the nearest pool of water. Grab the Max Potion from the platform, and surf to the southeast corner. Head north across the next two pools, the second of which has a Full Restore hidden on its north shore. Go west, jump the ledge, and head west to the wall. Swim north across the water and jump the ledge to reach a platform with 40. Loop back around to the north, and continue eastward. Surf across another pool, and pick up the Escape Rope from the northeast platform. Cross the northeast pool, then jump the two north-central ledges to collect a Dragon Scale. Jump the third ledge and go west for an Elixir, then cross the northwest pool to the ladder.
Use Rock Smash, or approach from the east, to reach the NeverMeltIce. Climb up the eastern ladder.

Lower Cave
B2F (East)
Navigate around the small platforms to get an Iron and a hidden Ether. Go east, then south for an Iron Ball, then follow the platform to the southwest. Grab the Max Revive, and climb down the ladder.
Move southward and climb onto the rocky ridge. In the east-central area, stand five steps from the east wall at the edge of the ice, then slide south and east to reach 72. Slide westward and climb up the ladder.

Basement
B1F (South)
Walk down the nearest stairway and turn east. Check the lone rock for a hidden Max Revive, and take the large stairway down to the northeastern-most area. The Karate King of Saffron's Fighting Dojo is training here, and gladly accepts your challenge.
First, go west and use Strength to move the boulder one step southward. Approach the ice patch from the south and use the boulder as a stopping point to reach the nearby Iron. Climb up the western ladder.

{| style="margin: auto;"
1F (Southeast)
|
Collect the Protein from the ridge to the north. Another Kimono Girl can be seen to the south.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Goldenrod City

Goldenrod City has been overrun by Team Rocket. It is up to you to liberate the Radio Tower and finally put an end to their schemes!

Radio Tower

1F

A Rocket Grunt blocks the stairs to 2F. His orders are to allow only people dressed in Team Rocket's uniform to pass.

Radio Tower

1F

Because of your disguise, the Rocket Grunt mistakes you for a new recruit and moves aside. Just as you are about to climb the stairs, Silver rushes in. He yells at the guard, demanding that the group stop harassing people. He recognizes you a moment later, and criticizes you for wearing the uniform. His words reveal you as an imposter, and you abandon the disguise. Realizing his mistake, the Rocket Grunt immediately draws you into battle.

2F

There are four Rocket Grunts patrolling the second floor. Battle past them to reach the western stairs.

3F

Battle another two Rocket Grunts and Scientist Garett. A Card Key is required to access the eastern area, so take the western stairs instead.

4F (West)

Beat the first Rocket Grunt and Scientist Trenton to reach the stairs to the Director's office.

5F (West)

The Director is being held captive here in his office, or at least that is how it seems at first. This man is an imposter, and is actually Petrel in disguise. Prepare for battle!

When the battle ends, Petrel reveals that the real Director is being held in the Underground Warehouse, behind the locked door in Goldenrod Tunnel's access hallway. He doubts that you will even get that far, and hands over the Basement Key.

Goldenrod Underground

Goldenrod Tunnel, Warehouse

The Kimono Girl

Enter Goldenrod Tunnel and head to the access hallway to find another of the Kimono Girls. She mentions seeing Team Rocket members running around, and realizes that it was because you took them on. She wonders aloud if you may be able to face a certain legendary Pokémon, but stops herself and hurries away.

Use the Basement Key to unlock the door. Go down the stairs in the next room to reach the Underground Warehouse.

B2F

Silver appears again a short distance from the entrance. He followed you, hoping that you would lead him to Lance. Since he was never able to find him, Silver decides to defeat you first instead.

Rival Battle 4

Each of Silver's Pokémon has grown 10 levels since the previous battle. His Zubat has since evolved into Golbat, and the Pokémon that he took from Elm's lab—either Totodile or Chikorita—has now evolved into its final form. His team includes one new addition, a Sneasel. As a Dark/Ice Pokémon, it takes massive damage from Fighting-type moves.

Chikorita If the player chose Chikorita:

Cyndaquil If the player chose Cyndaquil:

Totodile If the player chose Totodile:

Defeated, he wonders aloud if what Lance told him about not treating his Pokémon properly is true, but refuses to give up on becoming stronger.

Pick up TM82 (Sleep Talk) in the interior room, then speak to the Director.

Afterward, pick up the Ultra Ball in the corner, then climb the stairs to reach the fifth floor.

5F (East)

Head toward the broadcasting studio to draw the attention of Ariana. She intends to get payback for her defeat in Mahogany Town.

Afterward, step into the elevator to automatically ride to the Observation Deck.

Observation Deck

Exit the elevator and speak to a final Rocket Executive, Archer. He reveals the details of their plan: to take over the radio station and announce their return. Their hope is that hearing this broadcast will bring their leader, Giovanni, back from his solo training so that he can lead them to regain their former glory. He refuses to let you interfere any further, and draws you into battle.

Conceding defeat, Archer formally disbands Team Rocket, just as Giovanni did before him. The Rockets flee the building, and the Director returns a moment later. He exclaims that your courageous actions have saved Pokémon nationwide, and rewards you with a Rainbow WingHG / Silver WingSS. He explains that there used to be a different tower at this site, but it was old and unstable. During demolition to make way for the new Radio Tower, this gleaming feather was found at the top.

As you exit the tower, speak to DJ Mary on 4F (East) for a BrightPowder, and the girl on 3F to get TM11 (Sunny Day).

The next destination is Blackthorn City, to the east of Mahogany Town.

Mahogany Town

With Team Rocket gone, the souvenir shop's owner and her granddaughter have returned to reopen their store. The shady salesman who blocked the way eastward to Route 44 has disappeared, as well.

Route 44

Route 44

Route 44 is a pleasant mountain path that links Mahogany Town to the Ice Path. It is filled with abundant greenery, and springs that feed into several large ponds. The only patch of tall grass lies tucked away between two of these ponds.

The Ice Path is a frigid cave that connects Route 44 and Blackthorn City. Travel is made difficult by large sheets of ice, and boulders that must be moved to reach new areas.

1F (Northwest)

Go northeast to slide across the first patch of ice and continue on to the second in the northwest. Bumping into one of the rocks scattered here allows travelers to change direction.

Ice patch 2 ↑ Up, ← Left, ↑ Up, ← Left, ↓ Down, ← Left, ↑ Up, → Right

Go east and pass by the stairway to reach the third ice patch. This one may be approached from two spaces on its west side; enter from the northern-most point for a shorter puzzle. Be sure to pick up HM07 (Waterfall) on the eastern edge.

The Clumsy Traveler

Backtrack and walk across the rocky ridge. There is a man standing to the east; when you approach, he asks if the item that you just found was an HM. He claims to be the one who dropped it, but asks that you keep it. Continue on and climb down the northeast ladder.

BF (North)

There are four boulders scattered around this part of the cave, and each one must be dropped through a different hole in the floor to form a path on the ice below. Go north and loop around the northwest corner to find the first two boulders near the middle of B1F.

Puzzle Solution
Boulder 1 (To Southwest) Right 1, Down 3, Left 5, Down 1, Right 1
Boulder 2 (To Northwest) Up 4, Right 1, Down 1
Boulder 3 (To Southeast) Left 1, Down 5, Left 1, Down 3, Up 1, Left 4
Boulder 4 (To Northeast) Up 2, Right 2, Up 3, Left 2

Of the two boulders in the southwest area, begin with the southernmost one. Use Strength to maneuver it around the scattered rocks and drop it down through the southwest hole. Backtrack a bit and move the second boulder northward, so that it sits next to the lone stalagmite. Leave it here for a moment and head to the southeast area to find the third boulder. Move it to the southeast hole, then continue northward. Push the fourth boulder to the north-central hole, then go west to finish moving the second boulder to the northwest hole. With all four boulders cleared, climb down the northeast ladder.

B2F (West)

The four boulders from the floor above have fallen in a spiral shape that grants access to the ladder in the middle of the chamber. Before continuing on, there are several items that can be found nearby, including a Max Potion. To reach the middle area, begin in the northeast corner and slide westward across the ice to the first boulder. Move in a clockwise direction from here to reach the patch of clear ground in the center, and collect the Full Heal before climbing the ladder.

B3F

Use Rock Smash, or approach from the east, to reach the NeverMeltIce. Climb up the eastern ladder.

B2F (East)

Move southward and climb onto the rocky ridge. In the east-central area, stand five steps from the east wall at the edge of the ice, then slide south and east to reach TM72 (Avalanche). Slide westward and climb up the ladder.

B1F (South)

First, go west and use Strength to move the boulder one step southward. Approach the ice patch from the south and use the boulder as a stopping point to reach the nearby Iron. Climb up the western ladder.

1F (Southeast)

Collect the Protein from the ridge to the north. Another Kimono Girl can be seen to the south.

The Kimono Girl

There is a gap two steps wide on the north edge of the ice patch. Begin from the east side, and slide down, left, down, then right to reach the girl. She explains that her sandals are frozen to the ground, and asks if you would give her a push on her back. After a hearty shove, she slides away to clear ground, and thanks you as she exits the cave.

From this spot, slide left, up, right, down, right, and down again to reach a PP Up. Return to the Kimono Girl's prior location and slide southward to the exit.
