The contents of this article have been suggested to be split into articles for each Owner's Pokémon that have cards referencing the Owner and/or a mechanical theme. Please discuss it on the talk page for this article. |
Owner's Pokémon are a variant of Pokémon in the Pokémon Trading Card Game that have the name of a Trainer, organization, or location as part of the card's name. The ones using the name of a Trainer are sometimes known as Trainers' Pokémon[1]. These Pokémon were introduced in the Gym Heroes expansion. In fact, both Gym Heroes and the subsequently released Gym Challenge have Owner's Pokémon as the only kind of Pokémon in the set. While Owner's Pokémon have had a fairly constant presence in the TCG, especially as promotional cards, none have been printed as part of a main expansion from the release of the Japanese-exclusive Pokémon VS expansion save for Imakuni?'s Doduo in Evolutions until Battle Partners.
As the name of the owner is part of the name of the card, a deck may include up to 4 each of the regular and specific Owner's versions of the same species. Owner's Pokémon can only evolve from an Owner's Pokémon with the same owner. For example, Brock's Sandslash has an "evolves from Pokémon" field that specifies that it evolves from cards named Brock's Sandshrew. Thus, it can evolve from the card Brock's Sandshrew but not a card that is named Sandshrew. Non-Owner's Pokémon cannot evolve from an Owner's Pokémon either. To continue the example, a normal Sandslash card specifies it evolves from cards named Sandshrew, so it cannot evolve from a card named Brock's Sandshrew. Owner's Pokémon are often designed to synergize with specific Trainer cards, particularly Stadium cards, which were also introduced in Gym Heroes.
The Pokémon VS expansion introduced a different style of Owner's Pokémon that do not evolve and are always Basic Pokémon regardless of the evolution stage that cards depicting that Pokémon usually use. This style appears on cards outside of Pokémon VS for promotional releases, primarily relating to Pokémon movies. Despite many Owner's Pokémon featuring anime and movie characters, it wasn't until the ADV-P Promotional cards that Ash Ketchum was featured as one of these owners. "VS-style" Owner's Pokémon have not been featured in any main expansions since their debut, and are rarely released outside Japan.
Aesthetically, Owner's Pokémon tend to feature an an image of the owner on the right side of the card. For people, this is a an icon of their head. For organizations, it is usually a Grunt from the team. However, the EX Series used the logo for the organization instead of any one character. Locations instead use a stylized icon representing a portion of the place. Cards based on real world promotions often use a logo from the event they are from, sometimes stamping it over a corner of the art instead of using a dedicated space. on the card. Some cards, especially those released as promotional cards after the EX Series, do not have any image for the owner at all. The sheer number of these cards mean that there is plenty of variation, especially in various one-off releases.
In the Original Series, these icons are found in the bottom right of the card, and are placed on top of a relevant symbol. For example, the Gym Leaders usually use the Gym Badge the respective leader gives out. Owner's Pokémon from Pokémon VS and related sets put the icons inline with the Pokédex information, meaning they went below the artwork. The EX series moved icons back to the lower right corner of the card, without including any symbols. Instead they "pop out" from a white bar in the that corner, which is drawn similarly to the bottom border of the artwork. Even then, nether Team Magma's Pokémon nor Team Aqua's Pokémon follow this, instead only using the team's logo. In the EX Series, cards owned by villainous teams have special flourishes around the artwork window and type icon.
Frequently, but not always, the layout an Owner's Pokémon uses results in the card not including a Pokédex entry. This varies by the series and release. Sometimes, these cards have original text in that field instead of borrowing from one of the video games.
When card text refers to these cards, they use phrases like: "Pokémon that has an owner in its name" for any Owner's Pokémon. This is rare, as cards much more frequently check for Pokémon with a specific owner. Those cards use phrases like, "Pokémon with Brock in its name", " cards with Erika in their names", "Pokémon that has Dark or Rocket's in its name" and so on.
Related Concepts
The concept of Pokémon that are owned by trainers or associated with organizations and locations has been revisited several times since the heyday of Owner's Pokémon.
Delta Species cards from the EX Series that depict Pokémon in Holon affected by exposure to the electromagnetic waves emitted by the Holon Research Tower. Instead of changing the name of the card, the symbol "δ" and the phrase "Delta Species" are placed next to the name of the card.
Pokémon SP cards from the Platinum Series return to highlighting Pokémon that a trainer owns and uses. They keep the idea of having an icon of the character on the card and changing the name of the Pokémon to match. However, they add a symbol to the name as a suffix to the species name instead of using words, such as or , and usually this symbol is a term for a group of Trainers rather than a specific character. This suffix is not regarded as being an Owner within the game rules.
Team Plasma cards from the Black & White Series depict the Pokémon of Team Plasma, along with the people who work for them, the tools at their disposal, and the locations they are associated with. However, instead of changing the name of the card or putting a symbol on the card, these cards display the Team Plasma title, along with blue borders and a watermark of the Team Plasma shield.
Regional variants are forms of Pokémon from specific regions. This is depicted in the TCG by changing the name of the card to include the relevant adjective.
The Trainer Gallery cards from Cosmic Eclipse and the Sword & Shield Series show a Pokémon and a Trainer together, usually but not always depicting a partnership between them. The name of the card also does not change.
Many cards outside of these groups communicate the idea of a Pokémon with a Trainer without using a mechanic or being in a category by featuring a character in their art and/or having an effect that references a Supporter card containing that character's name. The name of the card does not change for these kinds of cards as well.

_____'s Pokémon
_____'s Pokémon are Pokémon that the player owns. The space for the name is instead a blank, so the player can write their name in. They can be divided into five groups.
- The first group consists of _____'s Pikachu and _____'s Chansey, though only the former was released in English. Instead of having Pokédex entries, these cards have a space for the player's birthdate. _____'s Pikachu additionally has a special mechanic where its Birthday Surprise deals more damage on the player's birthday.
- The second group is a number of PLAY Promotional cards. The first three were given to players who continued to subscribe to the Player's Club during 2004, while the latter three were given to players who started or continued subscribing during 2005. Each card had an attack that only costs , and positively affected one of that player's Benched ____'s Pokémon.
- The third group consists of _____'s Pikachu, a jumbo card with two attacks that check for if today is the player's birthday, like the first ____'s Pikachu.
- The fourth group is only _____'s Pikachu, which again has a space for writing in the player's birthday instead of a Pokédex entry.
- The fifth group has three jumbo cards: ______'s Snivy, ______'s Tepig, and ______'s Oshawott. These cards also have an attack with a blank name, so that can be customized too. In Japan, these cards were released in a promotion involving Lawson stores. Instead of writing directly on these cards, players would create vouchers on their website with the Owner's name and the name of the attack. Then the information would be printed onto the card. In America, these cards instead had blank spaces as with the other cards here, as they were released in Starter Figure Boxes without such a promotion.
Koga's Pokémon
Sabrina's Pokémon
Blaine's Pokémon
Giovanni's Pokémon
Rocket's Pokémon
In contrast to Dark Pokémon, which are Pokémon evolved by Team Rocket, Rocket's Pokémon are typically Basic Pokémon. In the EX Series, they are uniquely pure Darkness-type cards, regardless of their species' actual type.

Crystal Tower's Pokémon
Crystal Tower's Pokémon represent Pokémon in the Crystal Tower, a location with an original name but represents the Hale family's mansion covered in crystals. There are two Pokémon with this owner, both of which are tied to the movie Spell of the Unown: Entei. The first one was a Jumbo card released in the August 2000 issue of CoroCoro Comic. It uses its Pokédex information differently from other cards, which translates to "Entei VS Charizard - Hot Battle" in reference to the film's story instead of category, height and weight. Some additional text on the card's borders incidcates the film, the card's size, and status as a card from CoroCoro. The 10th Movie Commemoration Set, accompanying The Rise of Darkrai, included a second Crystal Tower's Pokémon. No changes to this card's layout can be attributed to its owner, though it does have a new Pokédex entry.

Alto Mare's Pokémon
Alto Mare's Pokémon represent Pokémon of the city of Alto Mare. They can be divided into two groups,
- The first group is a set of five Alto Mare's Pokémon based on those seen in Pokémon VS, meaning they are always Basic Pokémon regardless of what species they depict. These were printed in the Theater Limited VS Pack, a Half Deck released to coincide with Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias. Alto Mare's Latias and Alto Mare's Latios have Poke-Bodies that reference the other card by name. An icon representative of the Alto Mare cityscape is on the right side of cards, below their artwork.
- The second group consists of two cards, Alto Mare's Latias and Alto Mare's Latios. They were released in the 10th Movie Commemoration Set, which accompanied The Rise of Darkrai. However, the cards are themed to the older film Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias. While neither card has any effects that care about an Owner, their names mean that the older Alto Mare's Latias and Alto Mare's Latios reference these cards. No changes to these cards' layout can be attributed to their owner.

Ash's Pokémon
Ash's Pokémon represent Pokémon that Ash Ketchum owns. They can be divided into three groups.
- The first group is a set of Ash's Pokémon based on those seen in Pokémon VS, meaning they are always Basic Pokémon regardless of what species they depict. These were printed in the EX Series. Ash's Treecko is the first such card, released as a promotional card. The others saw print in various movie themded deck kits, with the first being Ash's Torkoal, released as part of the Movie Commemoration VS Pack: Sky-Splitting Deoxys deck kit. Several more of Ash's Pokémon would receive cards in deck kits in this manner. Ash's portrait is in the lower right corner of these cards.
- The second group is a singular card, Ash's Pikachu. This card was included in the Ash vs Team Rocket Deck Kit, specifically in the Ash Half Deck, during the Sun & Moon Series. It improves the effect of Ash's Friendship, but through a direct name check rather than checking for the specific owner. There is no change to how this card is templated compared to other cards.
- The third group are a set of SM Black Star Promos representing the various Ash's Pikachu forms. They are also part of the Sun & Moon Series. They have a stamp of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! in the lower right corner of the artwork, as per the promotion they were released as part of.
