They manage to avoid the attack and Dulio introduces himself, saying he is a member of [[Team Kings]], and that he wants Akira's Rockruff. Akira acknowledges the huge burden that Rockruff has been carrying, and realises this is why it always wants to get stronger.
Dulio demands that they hand Rockruff over, but Akira shields his Pokémon and refuses to let it be taken, even when confronted by the intimidating Golisopod. He admits he doesn't fully understand what is going on, but as Rockruff's partner, is going to fight by its side.
Enraged at Akira's defiance, Dulio commands Golisopod to make him stand aside. Seeing this causes the injured Rockruff to experience a vision from the past in which a person says they must fight together to the end and protect the red stone. Rockruff howls and staggers forward to protect its {{pkmn|Trainer}}, and begins to [[Evolution|evolve]]. The glowing Pokémon surges forward and intercepts Golisopod, sending the large Pokémon crashing into rocks.
Akira and Mana are both shocked by the evolution of Rockruff. Mana thinks Akira's emotions must have resonated with Rockruff's in a time of great need, causing it to evolve into {{p|Lycanroc}}.

Rockruff's Secret (Japanese:イワンコの秘密 ) is the fifth chapter of the Pokémon Horizon manga.

Synopsis

Tokio is summoned to a grand hall lit by torches on either side. Sat at a large desk at the end of the hall, the shadowy figure of the boss asks Tokio why he has failed in his order to capture the Rockruff with the red stone. Tokio explains he wants to see how powerful Akira and Rockruff become, but the boss insists that this is not a game, and that it was a mistake to trust Tokio with the task. Another mysterious stranger, whom Tokio acknowledges as Dulio, says he will capture Rockruff instead.

On a boat traveling to the next island, Akira and Mana notice that Rockruff is missing, and are shocked to find it in the water battling a Tentacool, at a great disadvantage to itself. They wonder why Rockruff is going to such lengths to get stronger and tell it not to fight Pokémon that are so much stronger than it, even with its mastery of the Z-Move.

As the group are walking on the road, Dulio appears with his Golisopod and threatens them that their island challenge is at an end. He warns them that they are not ready to take on Golisopod. Mana knows that it is too strong, but Akira and especially Rockruff want to battle. Dulio reiterates that this is where their challenge ends, and saying it is not a game, uses Golisopod to attack the group.

They manage to avoid the attack and Dulio introduces himself, saying he is a member of Team Kings, and that he wants Akira's Rockruff. Akira is confused at the mention of Team Kings, and doesn't know why they would want his Rockruff, but Dulio says that they could never appreciate how special it is.

Golisopod uses Pin Missile, but Rockruff evades it with a shout from Akira. Golisopod uses Glare, and then Razor Shell, both of which are also dodged by the Puppy Pokémon. Dulio is impressed by the dodging of Rockruff but says that it can't win by only doing that.

Realising they can't win by dodging alone, Akira and Rockruff regroup, and Akira begins the Z-Move dance. With a shout from Akira to go full power, Rockruff uses the Z-Move Breakneck Blitz, to the amazement of Dulio. Golisopod endures the hit due to its armor, though Akira says its movement is slowed.

Having got close to Golisopod using the Z-Move, Akira tells Rockruff to dodge Razor Shell and headbutt its opponent. Mana is impressed by the tactic of getting close to its opponent by using the Z-Move, but Dulio reveals that Golisopod had in fact used Fury Cutter. It strikes Rockruff many times with the attack, with its movement unhindered by the Z-Move.

Mana admits that Dulio and his Pokémon are too strong. With Rockruff unable to battle on, Akira shields it from Dulio who is ready to claim it for Team Kings. Dulio reveals that he wants Rockruff so that he can conquer the world. He says Rockruff is special, and the group realise that it has demonstrated that it has a mysterious power before.

Dulio continues, saying that Rockruff's red stone has the power to open the Ultra Wormhole, a portal to another dimension in which Solgaleo appears. Team Kings want to capture the Legendary Pokémon and harness its infinite solar energy to take over the world.

Rockruff howls and staggers forward to protect its Trainer, and begins to evolve. The glowing Pokémon surges forward and intercepts Golisopod, sending the large Pokémon crashing into rocks.

Akira and Mana are both shocked by the evolution of Rockruff. Mana thinks Akira's emotions must have resonated with Rockruff's in a time of great need, causing it to evolve into Lycanroc.
