Lycanroc Evolution! (Japanese: ルガルガン進化! Lugarugan Evolution!) is the sixth chapter of the Pokémon Horizon manga.
Synopsis
To the surprise of everyone, whilst saving Akira from the attack of Golisopod, Rockruff evolves into Lycanroc. Realising it will be a much tougher task now to take Lycanroc from Akira and Mana, Dulio commands Golisopod to attack again, but Lycanroc dodges it and strikes back. Dulio orders his Pokémon to move over to the side of Lycanroc which it is blind from because it is covered by its mane of fur, but that does not help it. Akira is overjoyed at the amazing Lycanroc, that Rockruff had confronted its destiny as being the key to Team Kings' world domination and evolved into a bigger, stronger Pokémon to do so.
The battle is not over. Dulio reveals his Z-Ring and Golisopod unleashes its Z-Move, Savage Spin-Out. Mana shouts for Lycanroc to dodge it but Dulio says that Z-Moves can't be dodged. Savage Spin-Out strikes a heavy blow to Lycanroc, leaving it on the ground. Thinking the battle is over, Dulio commands Golisopod to return, but Akira is correct in thinking the tough Lycanroc could withstand the Z-Move. Lycanroc stands up, licks its wound, and taunts Golisopod into attacking again. Dulio commands Golisopod to attack, but Lycanroc strikes first with a powerful uppercut, fainting Dulio's Pokémon.
Akira and Mana celebrate the win, but Lycanroc glares at Dulio, and, ignoring Akira, continues to hit Golisopod. Dulio retreats, sending out his Mandibuzz, and starts to fly from the scene. He shouts down to Akira that Team Kings will continue to come after him. Lycanroc then attempts to pursue Dulio, but apparently exhausted from the battle, collapses. Then, to the disbelief of Akira and Mana, devolves back into Rockruff.
Later at the Pokémon Center, Mana explains to Akira that she's never seen a Pokémon un-evolve before, and that there's no such thing. She has also noticed something odd about Lycanroc too–that Lycanroc evolve into Midday Form if they evolve during the daytime, and Midnight Form if they evolve during the night-time–but Rockruff evolved into the Midnight Form at midday. Akira says it could be to do with the power of the red stone around Rockruff's neck, that it is the key to an Ultra Wormhole so could have more powers.
Mana says they can't carry on with the island challenge now, but before Akira can respond, he is pulled away by Rockruff in the direction of Team Kings, in an attempt to follow and track them down. Akira says he wants to ask for help from a grown-up like Professor Kukui, that there are enemies that Akira and Mana cannot take on yet–and Mana agrees, thinking that Akira is maturing as a Trainer by knowing the limits of him and his Pokémon.
Insistent, Rockruff barks and reaffirms his intention to track Team Kings down, and Akira quickly agrees, leaving Mana aghast. She asks how Akira can change his mind so quickly, and Akira explains that he doesn't like telling Rockruff to hang back. Team Kings were likely to come after them again, so Akira is trying to go after them before they can. This would be good experience for the pair on the way to Team Kings headquarters, and if Rockruff wanted to go, Akira didn't want to stop him.
Mana stops and thinks that Akira always sides with Rockruff, and she realises she can help them better if she is supportive of them, and walks onwards with Rockruff. Akira ponders why Lycanroc would not listen to his commands when he told it to stop in the battle earlier.
Back at the beach, a girl is talking with Tokio about how she has heard stories of a Rockruff evolving into a Lycanroc and devolving back again. She is the person tasked with capturing Rockruff and the red stone next, and Tokio wishes her luck. Akira suggests that the group take a break and relax, but the ever-determined Rockruff drags Akira in its eagerness to carry on.
