Yamask (Japanese: デスマス Desumasu) is a Ghost Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves into Cofagrigus starting at level 34.
It evolves into Cofagrigus starting at level 34.

Biology
In Galar, Yamask has a dual-type regional form. It evolves into Runerigus when the player travels under the large rock arch in Dusty Bowl after Yamask takes at least 49 HP in damage from attacks without fainting.
Physiology
Yamask is a shadow-like Pokémon holding a simply designed stone face which was from its time as a human, one rather similar to that of the one in the forehead of Cofagrigus. It has two shadowy, tendril-like arms and large, red eyes.

Gender differences
(Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details.)
None.

Special abilities
Biology
Due to being a human long ago, it has memories of being a human. If someone wears the mask Yamask carries, they will become possessed by the Yamask in question.

Yamask is a shadow-like Pokémon holding a golden mask that has a face from its time as a human. It has two shadowy, tendril-like arms and large, red eyes. It also has a small tail-like appendage that holds the mask. Yamask is capable of speech when possessing a human, but not in its regular form.

Behavior
Due to being a human long ago, Yamask retains its memories from before it became a Pokémon. It becomes furious when the mask is lost or taken away. If someone wears the mask Yamask carries, they will become possessed by the Yamask in question. Sometimes, it looks at this mask and cries, apparently in longing. Yamask is known to wander the ruins of ancient civilizations. Yamask and its evolution, Cofagrigus, are the only known Pokémon that can have Mummy as an Ability.
Yamask are known to have once been human, and as such, they retain memories of their former lives. Each Yamask carries a mask depicting the face it once had. Sometimes, it looks at this mask and cries, apparently in longing.

Habitat
Forms
Yamask can be found in pyramids where people have been buried.
Yamask has a regional form: Galarian Yamask.
Diet
In the anime
Galarian Yamask, in contrast to its Unova variant, has purple eyes and has an ancient clay tablet directly attached around its tail. Galarian Yamask is said to have been born when that tablet was drawn to a vengeful spirit. The tablet bears cursed engravings that resemble a serpent's tail and is said to absorb Yamask's dark power. This process, brought by an ancient curse, triggers Galarian Yamask's evolution into Runerigus. Galarian Yamask and its evolution, Runerigus, are the only known Pokémon that can have Wandering Spirit as an Ability.

Major appearances
Yamask made an appearance in BW014, where it was causing havoc in the Nacrene City Museum because its mask had been put on display after it accidentally dropped it while sleeping. In the end Lenora, along with Ash, Iris, Cilan and Hawes gained an understanding with it and gave its mask back and Yamask left the museum peacefully.

James's Yamask
Evolution
A James appeared before Team Rocket in BW025 where James proceeded to catch it.
Yamask evolves into Cofagrigus.

Minor appearances
Galarian Yamask evolves into Runerigus.

Major appearances
James's Yamask
In Battling For The Love of Bug-Types!, James was able to caught a male Yamask that appeared before TRT. At the end of Pokémon the Series: Black & White, James had to give Yamask to Giovanni as a sign that they accomplished something in Unova. Yamask returned to James's party in Rocket Revengers!.

Other
Yamask debuted in A Night in the Nacrene City Museum!, where it was causing havoc in the Nacrene City Museum. This eventually turned out to be because Yamask's mask had been put on display after it accidentally dropped it while sleeping. In the end, Lenora, along with Ash, Iris, Cilan, and Hawes, gained an understanding with it and gave its mask back. Yamask then left the museum peacefully.
Additionally it is stated that this Yamask is millennia old.

Minor appearances
In Raid Battle in The Ruins!, a Yamask was living at the Colossus Ruins at the Desert Resort.

Galarian Yamask debuted in Sword and Shield... The Legends Awaken!, where it returned to normal after Dynamaxing.

A Trainer's Galarian Yamask appeared in The Winding Path to Greatness!.

In Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, a Yamask can be seen inside the Ancient Castle.

Trivia
Trivia
* Yamask's base Speed is the same as its Cofagrigus.
<!--Please do not mention that Galarian Yamask needs to be level 15 to evolve into Runerigus. It can evolve at any level. Proof: https://twitter.com/Unowninator/status/1217891685243346944?s=2 -->
* Yamask and its evolution are the only pure Ghost Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
* Galarian Yamask's Attack and Special Attack stats are the reverse of a Unovan Yamask's.
* No other Pokémon has the same egg group combination as Yamask and its Cofagrigus.
* Unovan Yamask, along with Litwick and Gimmighoul, has the lowest base Attack stat of all Ghost Pokémon.
* Although Yamask is able to learn Nightmare through breeding and Dream Eater through a TM, it does not learn any sleep-inducing moves.
* Galarian Yamask, along with Shedinja, Duskull, and Greavard, has the lowest base Special Attack stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
** It shares this trait with its evolved form, Cofagrigus.
* Galarian Yamask's evolution into Runerigus is the only location-based evolution in Sword and Shield, as all other Pokémon with location-based evolutions are either unobtainable or use an Evolution stone to evolve instead.

Origin
Origin
Yamask is based on an Egyptian Egyptian soul holding a death mask.
Yamask may be based on an Egyptian Ancient Egyptian conception of the soul#Ba (personality), a person's soul, typically depicted as a bird with a human head, or Ancient Egyptian conception of the soul#Shut (shadow), the shadow or silhouette of a person's soul — both appearing after the person's death. Its overall body shape is similar to the Eye of Horus. The mask on its tail is likely a death mask.

Galarian Yamask holds a clay tablet that may be based on runestones instead. It may also be based on a Deildegast, a Norwegian folklore spirit that is forced to haul around a boundary stone as punishment for moving one while it was alive. The fact that Galarian Yamask evolves into Runerigus after taking at least 49 HP in damage could be a very subtle reference to the Bardo, a Buddhist concept of Purgatory after death and before reincarnation; this process of Buddhist Purgatory is said to last 49 days.

Name origin
Name origin
Yamask is possibly from 闇 yami, meaning darkness, や ya, meaning bad, or yama, the Lord of the dead in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and mask. Desumasu could be derived from デス desu meaning death, and マスク masuku meaning mask.
Yamask may be a combination of 闇 yami (darkness), や ya (bad), or Yama (lord of the dead in Hindu and Buddhist mythology), and mask.

Desumasu may be a combination of death and mask. It may be a pun off of ですます体 desumasu-tai, a form of polite Japanese which gets its name from the fact that sentences often end in です desu or ます masu.

Yamask (Japanese: デスマス Desumasu) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves into Cofagrigus starting at level 34.

In Galar, Yamask has a dual-type Ground/Ghost regional form. It evolves into Runerigus when the player travels under the large rock arch in Dusty Bowl after Yamask takes at least 49 HP in damage from attacks without fainting.

(Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details.)

Biology

The mask of a Yamask

Yamask is a shadow-like Pokémon holding a golden mask that has a face from its time as a human. It has two shadowy, tendril-like arms and large, red eyes. It also has a small tail-like appendage that holds the mask. Yamask is capable of speech when possessing a human, but not in its regular form.

Forms

Yamask has a regional form: Galarian Yamask.

Galarian Yamask

Galarian Yamask evolves into Runerigus when the player travels under the large rock arch in Dusty Bowl after Yamask takes at least 49 HP in damage from attacks without fainting. Healing does not reset the counter, and damage can be taken across multiple battles. Taking damage from certain sources, such as self-inflicted Curse damage or weather effects, does not contribute to the 49 HP damage requirement.

Major appearances

James's Yamask

In Battling For The Love of Bug-Types!, James was able to catch a male Yamask that appeared before Team Rocket.

Trivia

Origin

Yamask may be based on an Egyptian ba, a person's soul, typically depicted as a bird with a human head, or šwt, the shadow or silhouette of a person's soul — both appearing after the person's death.

The fact that Galarian Yamask evolves into Runerigus after taking at least 49 HP in damage could be a very subtle reference to the antarābhava, a Buddhist concept of Purgatory after death and before reincarnation; this process of Buddhist Purgatory is said to last 49 days.

Name origin

Yamask may be a combination of 闇 yami (darkness), や ya (bad), or Yama (lord of the dead in Hindu and Buddhist mythology), and mask.

Desumasu may be a combination of death and mask. It may be a pun off of ですます体 desumasu-tai, a form of polite Japanese which gets its name from the fact that sentences often end in です desu or ます masu.
