Hazel, Pikachu, and Clefairy stumble upon a field of sunflowers. Hazel daydreams about having two of them—one for herself and one for Almond—but sees that the field belongs to a Vileplume. Suddenly, an Oddish pops out of the field and asks Pikachu and Clefairy if they would like to be its friends. It reveals that its mother is out until the afternoon, leaving it by itself for the time being. Oddish decides that Pikachu and Clefairy will be its big brothers for the day, delighting them. Hazel then leaves the group alone to visit Almond.

When Clefairy asks what Oddish wants to do, it explains that it wants to play "Pokémon make-believe," putting on a hat resembling Ash Ketchum's and grabbing a rubber Poké Ball. It then throws the ball directly at Pikachu, knocking it down. After that, Oddish decides that it wants to play "superhero" and references a TV show that neither of them know of. Deciding that Clefairy is a villain, Oddish barrels into it when its back is turned. This angers Clefairy, who demands an apology. Frustrated, Oddish tells the two that it would rather play alone, causing them to storm away.

As Clefairy and Pikachu leave, they turn around to see Oddish roaming the sunflower field by itself. Feeling sympathetic, the two tell Oddish that they will wait with it until its mother returns. Unfortunately, she is running late, and night falls. Pikachu and Clefairy start getting frightened by noises they hear in the field, and Oddish laughs at them, offering to protect them. A shadow appears over the group, terrifying all three of them. Oddish begins to wail in fear, prompting Pikachu and Clefairy to pick up heavy sticks to defend it.

The shadow turns out to be a Haunter, who is simply meeting her boyfriend. He soon arrives, comforting her as she cries to him about Oddish believing she was a monster. Pikachu and Clefairy then look down to Oddish to find that it has cried itself to sleep.

Later that night, a Vileplume arrives, revealing that she is both Oddish's mother and the owner of the field. She thanks Pikachu and Clefairy for their kindness and asks how she can repay them. This prompts Clefairy to request two sunflowers, which she gladly hands over.

Clefairy and Pikachu deliver the sunflowers to Hazel, and she is overjoyed.
