I'm not sure about the games, but in the Kanto and Johto anime Pikachu is fat, but the latter anime episodes he is skinner. alright, so, i just learned that this very small lagomorph named “Pika” exists. although Pikas aren’t actually mice, i’m beginning to think that Pikachu might be, possibly be inspired by them. feel free to correct me if i’m wrong, this is just a dumb theory i felt like sharing. ----[[User:inukoinu.k9|<span style="color:#52D2CA">i n u k o i n u</span>]] <small>''([[User talk:inukoinu.k9|<span style="color:#AF7AC5">talk</span>]])''</small> 03:43, 9 June 2020 (UTC) | |||
:Pikachu is confirmed to have borrowed traits from squirrels and mice, and pikapika is simply Japanese onomatopoeia for sparkling, so it seems the resemblance to the rodent "pika" (pronounced pie-ka) is just a coincidence. Not in any pictures I've ever seen. Pikas look more like nutrias to me. - unsigned comment from Blackjack Gabbiani (talk • contribs)
I don't now what nutrias are, but I do know that Pikachu looks like a rabbit. - unsigned comment from Pokencyclopedia (talk • contribs)
Regarding the name origin, I've been told that pikapika is an "expression for the brightness of gold", not simply just meaning sparkle. Can someone confirm? --Archaic 13:26, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
It is a very broad sound symbolism for sparkle - from daiya-ga pikapika hikaru (diamonds sparkle) to pikapika-no kagu (well-polished furniture), from hoshi-ga pikapika hikaru (stars twinkle) to pikapika-no ichinensei (not even going to try to figure this one out). I suppose it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say "gold shines" using pikapika. - 振霖T 14:48, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
pikapika-no ichinensei. Gah, I never wanted to hear that again. One company uses that almost like a motto in every one of their rather annoying ads. They're probably in some of the old encodes I did. --Archaic 01:13, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Is there any official source that states that its name comes from pikapika and not from the pika? ShinyTalk | Contribs 00:33, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Honestly, Pikachu has the best name in my opinion, as it can have obvious meanings in both Japanese and English. As stated, Japanese has pikapika (sparkle) + chuchu (squeak). PLUS Pika (animal related to rabbit) and chu being homophonous to the English word "chew", like gnaw, as a rodent does. ^^ Official evidence or no, you have to admit it'd be some coincidence if the world's most popular Pokémon just happened to be the only one with such a perfectly suited name, neh? :3 Heart of Thorns 23:34, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Pika (the animal) is pronounced "pai-kuh", not "pee-kuh". The similarity in spelling is purely coincidental Vienna Waltz 22:09, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Kanto Native?
I noticed that in the games, Pikachu can only be found "in the wild" in the Kanto Region. In GSC, Pikachu was only on Route 2 in Kanto, in RSE, it was only in the Safari Zone, which contained only "imported" Pokemon (that is, no Generation III Pokemon), and in DP, it's only in the Trophy Garden, a place that's basically confirmed to be importing Pokemon from other regions.
These "coincidences" lead me to believe that Pikachu is native to the Kanto Region, and its appearance everywhere else is due to humans bringing them to other locals.
Ignoring anamonlies like Pokemon Ranger, would it be a stretch to say that Pikachu are normally found only in Kanto as a piece of Trivia?--PikamasterADV 19:37, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- What is your reason for ignoring Fiore? --FabuVinny T-C-S 18:44, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'd think it's Kanto-native, too, but yeah, Fiore brings up a problem. I do agree, though, that they plopped in in the Hoenn Safari Zone so that they could have an excuse to have it in the Hoenn Dex. --TTEchidna 19:25, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- Because it's a "Side Game". And then you include the "wild" Pikachu in Mystery Dungeon, the Pikachu in Trozei!, and the "gift" Pikachu in PBR and Japanese Colosseum. Ranger also has Wild Starter Pokemon, Wild Fossils, and other anomolies, so I didn't include it. It was mostly a thought about the core RPGs. --PikamasterADV 20:34, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- Your anomolies don't mean much. The Trozei Pokémon are not wild, nor are the gift Pokémon. Orre only has nine wild Pokémon, none of which cause issues. Mystery Dungeon is set in a different dimension. However, Fiore is an established region with links to the world of the main RPGs. Starter Pokémon have to be found wild somewhere so being specific to Fiore where trainers are not found makes a lot of sense. The only fossil there is Aerodactyl, which is suitably found in an ancient area, not that fossils are that special any more.
- You can mention that it is the case in the handheld main series but the side games still count in the canon. --FabuVinny T-C-S 00:31, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

"Pikachu was not the original Pokémon mascot. It was supposed to be Clefairy, but this was changed because of the popularity of Ash's Pikachu."
This was stated in a interview? If someone has the source, I would like to see it.
And I wish that statement would be more specific. When was decided that Clefairy would be the mascot? Was it when that crappy Pokémon manga proved successful in Japan? Or it was decided from the start, and the manga used Clefairy because of that? Spideym 22:54, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

* However, Ash's Pikachu has bitten him a few times in the anime. "

The stomach pouch
In the trivia, it states that "In Pokémon Red and Blue, Pikachu's sprite shows it having a yellow stomach pouch. This is never shown again in later generations" - But two things - 1. Is it worth noting that a shiny Pichu is the colour of a Pikachu and a shiny Pikachu is the colour of a Raichu, or is that too obvious to mention? --Poppy Appletree 05:20, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'd say Pikachu's shiny is more of a darkish gold then brown. I agree on the Pichu one though. However, this is sprite trivia, so there's a chance it won't be added.--ForceFire 07:20, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
Light Ball Stats
I'm not sure if those Light Ball stats are correct. It says "5%" to capture a Pikachu holding a Light Ball, which should mean one in every 20. However, it took me to capture almost 40 in order to get a Light Ball. (38 captured to be exact, with 7 encounters that fled.) Wouldn't this mean that the chance of capturing a Pikachu with a Light Ball is less than 5%? FrozenStrategy 13:49, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think the hold rates for wild hold items go below five percent. With 38 individuals if the rate is correct there is a chance of 0.00749 (3 sig. fig., If I did the maths right), or about 0.75% chance of that occurring. Unlikely, but you may have just been unlucky. Legendary Pokémon, Veekun, Psypoke and Marrilland all say it's five percent as well. If you have the patience, try it again. Another set of data will help determine if the results are skewed due to random chance, or if there is something wrong with the percentage. Also, just for the record, which game is this in and how/where are you catching them? Werdnae (talk) 20:51, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Pokéathlon Stats
On my copy of SS, I've captured 2 Pikachu. The first had the stats listed on the article, the second had different stats. Was it a slight bug in the game or does this need adding to the article? FrozenStrategy 16:30, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Pika+Pika=More Pika?
When ever I enter the viridian forest in Heart Gold with a Pikachu in the first slot of my party, then I find more Pikachus! Whenever I enter without a pikachu I find barely any! Why?--Pika3323 20:32, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Lean Mean Electric Machine
Pikachu has notably gotten thinner and thinner throughout the years, not just in the anime, but even in the games and manga. Is this mentioned anywhere? I mean other than Caterpie this is the only Pokémon that has drastically changed in the anime, games, AND manga. (In the case of Caterpie, Caterpie only changed in color slightly.) --Landfish7 16:38, 4 December 2010 (UTC) I'm not sure about the games, but in the Kanto and Johto anime Pikachu is fat, but the latter anime episodes he is skinner. Trivia
Wild Pikachu are available in every region except Johto and Unova. A player would have to travel to Kanto in order to find wild Pikachu in Generation II.

Obtainability via Dream World
I highly doubt the claim that Pikachu or Pichu can be found on Dream World. Is there a source for this claim? Weixifan 01:27, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- Since no one has put forth any source for this claim or replied to this comment yet, I will remove the claim from the main article for the time being. If anyone has conclusive evidence that indeed some member of Pichu's evolutionary family can be found on the Dream World, please discuss here, and of course we will then put the claim back into the article. Name origin
Could it be possible that Pikachu's name also comes from words 'pika' (ぴかぴか - sparkling) and 'chu' (中 - inside/throughout)? I'm not 100% sure about this, but it would make sense. --Buglaux 15:05, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Trivia
"Prior to Generation V, Pikachu is one of the few Pokemon to be present in every Generation's regional dex." Shouldn't this be added to the trivia? This also applies for Tentacool, Zoobat etc... Flygonfanno1
- I don't think so. There is too many pokemon that this also applies to and we would have to add them to all the other articles. Plus there is a current ban on trivia so it's not gonna be added for a while. --Pokemaster97 14:52, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Availability in Blue (Japan)
Under "Game locations" it says that Pikachu can't be found in the wild in the Japanese Blue Version. Apart from the fact that this sounds highly unlikely, Pikachu isn't listed on the Japanese Blue Version's missing Pokémon list. Perlgia 10:31, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- It is found in the Japanese Blue, but only a handfull of them have been added to the locations section (Jynx, Lickitung). Also, the current catch template doesnt have an option for the Japanese Blue, though I'm working to fix that. Vuvuzela2010 Δ 17:59, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Iron tail?
I've looked through the whole page, and pikachu can't learn iron tail naturally. but on the egg move calculator it says you breed aron with nidoran M, breed the nidoran with female pikachu to get iron tail. - I don't know but I'm saying look at this link, is it right?--VictoryStar 12:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- I think that it looks pretty accurate seeing as that is how chain breeding works. Breed long enough with just the right Pokemon and they can know moves that they would normally not learn via level up, move tutor, or TM/HM. Frozen Fennec 16:16, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- Then could someone test it out and see if it's true? And if so, add it to the pikachu and the iron tail pages please.--VictoryStar 20:44, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I think the waitingforseedot website only calculated breeding tables for DPPt. I don't think it's caught up with BW (or even HGSS). So I'm pretty sure Pikachu can't legitimately learn Iron Tail this generation. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 21:07, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Pikachu trivia
Hey! I'm sorta new here, but I have something to bring up for the Trivia section: Pikachu is the only starter Pokémon to have only 2 species in its evolution chain in the game it was a starter in (in Pokémon Yellow, there was no Pichu- only Pikachu and Raichu). For every other starter, both before and since Yellow, the evo chain is 3 Pokémon (Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard). However, since Gold/Silver/Crystal, Pikachu has had a 3-link evo chain like every other starter.
I'm not experienced enough at wiki editing to do this- I have this feeling I'm gonna break some rule and get the part erased, or get banned, or something.ThePoketrix (talk) 12:47, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Sprites?
The 5th Generation sprites are all mixed up. The four non-Shiny sprites for BW and B2W2 are the same, all with a closed mouth like the Platinum sprite, while the Shiny sprites for the four games all have the open mouth. Also, the female Shiny sprite in BW has the extra black on the ears, which the non-Shiny is lacking. The sprites seem to all be there, just not in the right places. I don't know how to fix them, just thought I should point it out.Magentafeelings (talk) 19:01, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- Generation V actually has inconsistent spriting for Pikachu within the games themselves. The animated sprites (Pokédex forms function and battle) have open mouths as the first frame, while the statics (PC Box and all other Pokédex functions) have closed mouths. Because the normal sprites are animated, and the shiny sprites currently are not, that is why they are inconsistent. Additionally, the same problem is true for the ear inconsistency. In Black and White, the aforementioned static sprites had the Platinum-style ear coloring for female Pikachu, while the males had the updated ear coloring. Black 2 and White 2 repaired that specific inconsistency of the static sprites. Nothing is incorrect for the sprite versions that are currently supplied. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 19:56, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Close Relatives
I noticed that the part in the Physiology section about how Pikachu may be related to Emolga, Pachurisu, Plusle, Minun, Marill, and Maccinno was removed. While its deletion was logical considering this theory has nothing to do with Pikachu's physical appearance, can we at least add that to the trivia section? I feel it's worth noting. Nintendo101 (talk) 02:11, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- I removed it because I don't feel physical comparisons between Pokemon that aren't canonically related are noteworthy. I'm hesitantly in favor of grouping together the so-called Pikachu clones that are clearly made for marketing purposes (Pikachu, Plusle/Minun, Pachirisu, and to a lesser extent Emolga), but Marill and Cinccino have no business being grouped there at all unless we're going to mention every Pokemon with a similar body style on every Pokemon page, which would be ridiculous. Also, I object to the way it was phrased ("related to"/"distantly related to") because it's inherently speculatory and suggests a degree of genetic similarity that has no canonical suggestion of even existing in the Pokemon universe, much less being possible between these particular families. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 02:25, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
I understand that its just speculative and it has no business being in a section about Pikachu's Physiology, but I still found it interesting. Nintendo101 (talk) 02:43, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- I find it unnotable and not a pattern due to Generation II not adding an Electric rodent. Yes, Pichu is from Gen II, but it's not a separate species.--ForceFire 02:48, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Volt Tackle
Volt tackle is listed in the table for moves learned by breeding, but shouldn't it indicate that a held light ball is required for this? I think this is a good idea as out location sections on our Pokemon Pages only lists locations where it is obtainable.
