Cofagrigus is a blue and yellow sarcophagus with red, menacing eyes and four ebony hands that appear to be shadows. A simply designed face is prominent on the "forehead" of the Pokémon. Its real face is covered up by parts that slide out of the way when it is active. White, sharp fangs create a taunting smile and flamboyant patterns veil the coffin. The coffin is said to be made of gold. Ancient legends once told Cofagrigus could eat nearby humans and turn their lifeless bodies into mummies. It lives in tombs and ruins.

Cofagrigus is a blue and yellow sarcophagus-like {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with red, menacing eyes and four ebony hands that appear to be shadows. A simply designed face, which is the mask {{p|Yamask}} carries, is prominent on the "forehead" of the Pokémon. Its real face is covered up by parts that slide open when it is active. White, sharp fangs create a taunting smile, and flamboyant patterns veil the coffin. The coffin is said to be made of solid gold. Cofagrigus is seemingly a distant relative of {{p|Runerigus}}.

==In the anime==
Ancient legends once told Cofagrigus could seal nearby humans in their bodies and turn them into mummies; grave robbers who mistake them for normal coffins get this fate. Cofagrigus is said to have once been human but having forgotten its memories from when it was alive. They also enjoy eating gold nuggets. It lives in tombs and ruins waiting for victims. Cofagrigus has been used as a symbol for the wealth of kings from a bygone era.

===Origin===
===Origin===
Cofagrigus's design is based on a {{wp|sarcophagus}}. It was also most likely based on {{wp|Curse of the pharaohs|supposedly cursed Egyptian tombs}}. Any trespassers in the tombs are said to fall under a "curse" from its owner, which is said to cause illness, serious injury, or death. The hype of cursed tombs was made popular when many people in a team of explorers in 1922, who had opened and entered {{wp|Tutankhamun|King Tutankhamun}}'s tomb, began dying after the exploration. Cofagrigus's {{a|Mummy}} [[Ability]], which passively turns other Pokémon into mummies that in turn transform other Pokémon into mummies, is very similar to the popular culture depiction of the spread of a "zombie virus" in horror films.
Cofagrigus may be based on Ancient Egypt {{wp|sarcophagus|sarcophagi}} and funerary items, {{wp|Tomb of Tutankhamun#Burial goods|Tutankhamun's coffins and mask}} in particular. The pink and white colors of Cofagrigus's {{Shiny}} variant may have been inspired by the {{wp|Royal Tomb of Akhenaten|Sarcophagus of Akhenaten}}.

Cofagrigus may also be a reference to {{wp|Curse of the pharaohs|supposed curses in Egyptian tombs}}. This can be seen in Cofagrigus's {{a|Mummy}} [[Ability]], which negatively affects other Pokémon that come into contact with it.

Cofagrigus (Japanese: デスカーン Desukarn) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Yamask starting at level 34.

Biology

Cofagrigus opening its body like a sarcophagus

Cofagrigus is a blue and yellow sarcophagus-like Pokémon with red, menacing eyes and four ebony hands that appear to be shadows. A simply designed face, which is the mask Yamask carries, is prominent on the "forehead" of the Pokémon. Its real face is covered up by parts that slide open when it is active. White, sharp fangs create a taunting smile, and flamboyant patterns veil the coffin. The coffin is said to be made of solid gold. Cofagrigus is seemingly a distant relative of Runerigus.

In a fantasy sequence depicted in Raid Battle in The Ruins!, Cofagrigus is shown to be able to open its body like a sarcophagus.

Cofagrigus and its pre-evolution, Yamask, are the only known Pokémon that can have Mummy as an Ability.

Evolution

Cofagrigus evolves from Yamask.

Trivia

  • Previously, due to the censor that prevents Pokémon with offensive nicknames being traded on the GTS, an English-language Cofagrigus could not be traded without a nickname in Generation V. However, the filter has since been altered to allow Cofagrigus to be traded without a nickname.
  • Cofagrigus's Attack and Special Attack stats are the reverse of Runerigus's, while their other stats are identical.

Origin

Cofagrigus may be based on Ancient Egypt sarcophagi and funerary items, Tutankhamun's coffins and mask in particular. The pink and white colors of Cofagrigus's Shiny variant may have been inspired by the Sarcophagus of Akhenaten.

Cofagrigus may also be a reference to supposed curses in Egyptian tombs. This can be seen in Cofagrigus's Mummy Ability, which negatively affects other Pokémon that come into contact with it.

Name origin

Cofagrigus may be a combination of coffin and sarcophagus. It may also come from grim, grief, or egregious.

Desukarn may be a combination of death and 棺 kan (coffin). It may also be a pun on です か desu ka, a form used at the at the end of an interrogative sentence which can be translated as "Is it?".
