Synopsis
The episode begins with Ash, Tracey and Misty riding on Lapras when they are almost run down by a boat owned by a boy named Tad. Misty angrily gets the man to apologize for almost hitting Togepi. Tad apologizes and them proceeds to call Misty “pretty”. Tad knows Ash from his victory over Rudy of the Trovita gym.

On Tad’s boat the gang are told by Tad that he is also trying to get into the “Pokémon league” and that he had been after Ash had battled for his badge and that Ash had used pure power to win. Misty comments that Ash does not have any skill. Tad challenges Ash to a battle claiming that he likes to challenge people who know what there doing. Misty however jokes that this by pretending not to see Ash while Tad describes him. They then set a course toward an island that they presume to be deserted.

Ash, Tracey and Misty are sailing along on Lapras when they almost crash into another Pokémon trainer wanting to battle Ash. This trainer heard about Ash from the Trovita Island gym leader and wants to put his Pokémon up against Ash's. When the new trainer uses a super-powerful Poliwrath on Charizard, it's more than anyone expects. Charizard finally decides to obey and respect Ash as not only his trainer but also his friend, and the two become closer than ever!

Team Rocket however are on the island fixing up some sort of machine and spot “the twerps”. Tad and Ash begin their battle with Ash choosing Pikachu and Tad choosing Poliwrath, this Poliwrath is wearing a golden belt that it won from Tad’s local town for being the “most powerful” Pokémon there. Misty and Tracy are puzzled by this choice but Ash is none the less confident. He orders Pikachu to use an electric attack but quick as lightning Poliwrath uses double team to avoid it. Pikachu then uses Quick Attack to get rid of the illusionary Poliwraths. As Pikachu gets rid of the last one it uses it’s tail to shock Poliwrath however despite this Poliwrath seems undamaged. Poliwrath quickly uses Hypnosis followed by Water Gun to beat Pikachu. Tracy explains that Tad let Pikachu use it’s power and then Poliwrath used it’s own power to beat Pikachu. Tad cryptically tells the gang that his Poliwrath is at a higher level than Pikachu was.
Plot
Ash and ashfr encounter a large ship that nearly hits them while riding Lapras. The ship's captain checks on them for any injuries, and then introduces himself as Tad. He quickly recognizes Ash from the Trovita Gym.

Ash not very phased by Pikachu’s defeat tries to match power with power and uses Charizard much to the horror of Misty and Tracy. Charizard appears and looks ready to battle. Ash comments that he can handle Charizard but Charizard in turn like normal Flamethrowers Ash. Tad notices this and asks Ash if he is sure about the choice, Ash says he is but it proves to be a big mistake as Charizard flies off on it’s own. Charizard does nothing that Ash tells it and flies around trying to get Poliwrath with a Flamethrower and fails every time. Tad explains to Ash that Charizard may be powerful but ht is unable to control it. The match comes to an abrupt end when Poliwrath narrowly misses with it’s Water Gun on Charizard’s tail and instead unleashes a power Ice Beam. It hits Charizard who is locked in a cage of ice all over save for it’s tail. Tad recalls Poliwrath but promises Ash a rematch once he learns how to handle Charizard. Tad leaves with Charizard freezing and Ash seething from the defeat. Team Rocket watch the match noting that they know how it feels but they are determined none the less to get Pikachu.
Aboard the boat, Tad explains that he is trying to get into the "Pokémon League". He states that he battled Rudy after Ash did, and overheard Rudy commend Ash for using pure power to win. After Misty comments that Ash does not have any skill, Tad challenges Ash to a battle, claiming that he likes to challenge people who know what to do. Misty, however, jokes about this by pretending not to see Ash while Tad describes him. They then set a course toward Cleopatra Island, which they presume to be deserted. However, TRT is already on the island, doing some repairs to one of their machines. MTR spots Ash and his friends approaching the island through his binoculars and alerts Jessie and James, all hoping to steal Pikachu.

Later that night Ash is up trying to warm up Charizard from the ice cage. He rubs Charizard’s hide until his hands are literally red and raw. He is helped by Pikachu for a while. Ash tries hard to make sure that Charizard does not freeze and eventually it wakes up. However Charizard panics when it notices it’s tail and eventually gets knocked out once again. Misty and Tracy meanwhile are away for fire wood but come back soon enough and notice the disturbance.
After the group reaches Cleopatra Island, the battle begins. Ash selects Pikachu for the match, while Tad chooses his Poliwrath, which is wearing the golden championship belt that it won from Tad's hometown for being the most powerful Pokémon there. Misty is puzzled by the choice, given that Poliwrath has the type disadvantage. Tracey urges Ash to watch out for any tricks, but Ash is nonetheless confident. He orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt, but Poliwrath immediately uses Double Team to evade the attack and surround Pikachu. At Ash's command, Pikachu then uses Quick Attack to get rid of the illusory Poliwrath. Pikachu finds the real Poliwrath and uses his tail to shock it, but his opponent is unfazed by the Electric attack. Poliwrath quickly uses Hypnosis, followed by Water Gun to defeat Pikachu. Tracey explains that Tad let Pikachu use his energy up so that when Poliwrath used its own power, it could easily defeat Pikachu. Tad admits that there is more to battling than type match-ups and that he likes to use the element of surprise.

Ash and Misty continue to rub Charizard’s back and neck while Tracy checks it’s temperature. It is still very cold and Tracy gets some fire wood and Misty gets a blanket. Ash notices that his hands are raw. He does not care however and continues rubbing wanting to help Charizard heat up. Charizard once again wakes up and tries a flamethrower, however it does not work. Ash tries to get Charizard to calm down ever going as far as to let Charizard use it’s flamethrower on him. Charizard finally surrenders and agrees to let ash help it unhindered. Ash tells Charizard about their best times together especially about when he was Charmander and Charmeleon. There are several flashbacks about Charizard’s best moments. Eventually Misty and Tracy light up a grand total of four fires and they and Pikachu help to run Charizard to make him better. This continues into the night.
Ash, unfazed by Pikachu's defeat, tries to match power with power and calls out Charizard, much to the horror of his friends. Ash comments that he can handle Charizard, just as he burns him with Flamethrower. Tad notices this and asks Ash if he is sure about the choice. Ash says he is, just as Charizard flies off on his own. Tad recognizes Charizard's power but states that Ash will never get into the Orange League with a disobedient Pokémon. At Tad's request, Poliwrath launches a Water Gun at Charizard, which instantly calls the Pokémon back to the beach. As Ash urges his Pokémon to work with him, Charizard knocks him to the ground and attempts to hit him with his tail. Charizard continues to ignore Ash, then flies into the air and attempts to hit Poliwrath with Flamethrower. The two opponents fire Water Gun and Flamethrower attacks several times. The match comes to an abrupt end when Poliwrath unleashes a powerful Ice Beam, which freezes Charizard, except for his flaming tail. Charizard plummets to the sand, and Ash desperately tries to free his Pokémon from the ice with a rock. Tad recalls Poliwrath but promises Ash a rematch once he learns how to handle Charizard. He leaves with Charizard freezing and Ash seething from the defeat. Perched on the sea cliffs, Team Rocket watches the match and sees Ash's defeat as their next opportunity to snatch Pikachu.

In the morning Charizard wakes up to find Ash sleeping on him from last night and moves away from him without waking him. Ash and then gang awaken to a roar that comes from Charizard who shows Ash his tail flame which is just as strong as normal. The gang is overjoyed to find that the rubbing worked on the lizard Pokémon. However Team Rocket attack by causing an explosion that lets them trap Pikachu inside a giant drill machine. Tad also notices this and rushes to where the explosion came from. Tad rejoins the group just as Team Rocket say their motto. Pikachu is trapped in a shock proof box making his attacks useless. Team Rocket soon make a getaway by digging a tunnel. Just as Ash tries to pursue them, Charizard flies along side Ash and gives him a lift on his back. They fly after Pikachu through the tunnel until they come to the other end near a beach. Charizard uses its legs to grab the machine before it can go any further and pulls it back up the hill. Charizard attempts to burn the drill but Ash stops him to prevent him from burning Pikachu. Instead Charizard destroys the drill with a kick and then bites the box containing Pikachu, destroying it.
Later that night, Ash has set up a burning fire to assist Charizard's recovery and then rubs its hide. Charizard eventually wakes up and begins to thrash around in panic just as Ash's friends return with some firewood. Charizard tries to launch a Flamethrower at Ash but faints once again. Misty puts a blanket over Charizard's body as she and Ash continue to rub Charizard's back. Tracey checks Charizard's temperature and notes that he's still cold, so he decides to fetch more wood for the fire. Ash's efforts seem to be paying off, as Charizard wakes up again and his tail flame begins to burn more. As Ash continues to massage Charizard, he admits that he is not the best Trainer. He then asserts that he is always trying to get better and hopes that one day the two will battle side by side. Charizard secretly listens to Ash's words and reminisces about his time with Ash.

Pikachu is returned to Ash but Team Rocket is not done they bring out some drill weaponry and attempt to slice Ash, Pikachu and Charizard. Pikachu and Ash are knocked out and seeing his Master in danger Charizard learns Dragon Rage (mistakenly referred to as Rage by the Pokédex). This attack destroys Team Rocket’s machine and sends them blasting off once again.
In the morning, Charizard wakes up the group, and they realize that he has fully recovered. However, Team Rocket strikes, and they trap Pikachu inside their giant, shockproof drill machine with an explosion. Tad also notices the dust and rejoins the group, just as Team Rocket says their motto. Team Rocket then makes their getaway by digging a tunnel. Just as Ash tries to pursue them, Charizard flies beside him and urges Ash to get on his back. The pair flies into the tunnel after Pikachu, whereupon Charizard uses his feet to grab the machine before it can go deeper, and pulls it back up the hill. Charizard attempts to burn the drill but Ash stops him to prevent him from injuring Pikachu. At Ash's request, Charizard crushes the drill with his foot and bites down to destroy the box containing Pikachu.

Tad, Misty and Tracy finally find Ash and his Pokémon. Ash agrees to a rematch with Poliwrath to Charizard. Back on the beach Tad sends out Poliwrath while Ash uses Charizard and the battle begins. Poliwrath starts with a water gun but Charizard is able to dodge after finally obeying an order from Ash. It flies around for a few seconds before unleashing an ember; it sends multiple streams of fire toward Poliwrath. However Poliwrath counters with water gun by spinning on the spot dousing the flames. Seeing an opportunity Charizard tries a take down but Poliwrath counters again by catching its leg before it hits. Poliwrath then unleashes another ice beam but Charizard successfully evades by flying toward the sky. Poliwrath then tries a Body Slam on Charizard but it misses by Charizard doing a spinning maneuver and Poliwrath is knocked into the air. Charizard carries it up to the sky and then does its dreaded Seismic Toss on Poliwrath, winning the match for Charizard and Ash. Ash hugs Charizard and Tad recalls Poliwrath.
Pikachu is returned to Ash, but Team Rocket is not done yet. Meowth presses a button, and two circular saws attempt to cut Ash, Pikachu, and Charizard. Charizard manages to avoid the blades, but lands on its back, leaving Ash and Pikachu knocked out on the beach. Seeing Ash unconscious, Charizard's eyes gleam white and its tail flame grows to enormous proportion. Just as Ash checks his Pokédex for more details, a swirling fireball emerges in Charizard's mouth. To Ash's surprise, Charizard has learned Dragon Rage; the attack destroys Team Rocket's machine and sends them blasting off once again.

Over the sunset the gang wave goodbye to Tad with Charizard still out of its Poké Ball. Ash jumps into the air claiming that nobody will be able to beat him but accidentally knocks Charizard off balance while it is scratching itself with its leg. Getting angry Charizard unleashes a flamethrower at Ash, Misty and Tracy. Misty and Tracy in turn tell him not to get Charizard angry, he says not to worry and that he could take the heat as the episode ends.
Ash's friends and Tad find him and his Pokémon, and Tracey realizes that Charizard and Ash are on better terms. With the Flame Pokémon now under control, as promised, Tad challenges Ash to a rematch, which he accepts. Tad sends out Poliwrath and makes the first move, Water Gun. Ash orders Charizard to fly, and the Pokémon complies to evade the attack. Charizard's Ember attack is reduced to steam by Poliwrath's twirling Water Gun. Ash replies with Take Down. Poliwrath goes in for a Mega Kick, but Charizard catches his opponent's foot. Charizard flies into the air and avoids a close-range Ice Beam. Poliwrath attempts a Body Slam, but Charizard swoops in and sends it into the air. Charizard grabs hold of his opponent and performs Seismic Toss, taking Tad by surprise. Poliwrath is knocked out after it hits the ground. In celebration, Charizard lets out a mighty roar and Ash hugs his Pokémon. Tad rushes over to Ash, and the two Trainers exchange a handshake.

Plot

Ash and his friends encounter a large ship that nearly hits them while riding Lapras. The ship's captain checks on them for any injuries, and then introduces himself as Tad. He quickly recognizes Ash from the Trovita Gym.

However, Team Rocket is already on the island, doing some repairs to one of their machines. Meowth spots Ash and his friends approaching the island through his binoculars and alerts Jessie and James, all hoping to steal Pikachu.

The group waves goodbye to Tad as he leaves the island on his ship. Ash jumps in the air, claiming that nobody will be able to beat him, but he accidentally knocks Charizard off balance while it is scratching itself with its leg. Getting angry, Charizard unleashes a Flamethrower, causing Ash and his friends to flee. Ash's friends tell him to not get Charizard angry, but he asserts that he can take the heat.

Trivia

Errors

The headband error
  • In the scene where the group is on Tad's ship, there is a coloring error in which Tracey's headband is painted green instead of pink. This shade of green is the same as Tad's bandana.
  • After Charizard saves Pikachu, Ash congratulates it and he has his jacket and hat on, even though he didn't have them before Pikachu's rescue seconds ago. Also, they are seen disappearing again a few seconds later.
  • When Charizard destroys Team Rocket's drill, Ash is no longer on his back for a few seconds.
  • In this episode, Charizard easily carries Ash on his back. However, later on in Charizard's Burning Ambitions!, Ash was too heavy for Charizard to carry.
  • In the English dub:
    • The Pokédex incorrectly identifies Charizard's Dragon Rage as Rage.
    • Tad mentions that he hopes to compete against Ash in the Orange League, but it was later shown that the Orange League does not involve a Pokémon League Conference. In the Japanese version, he merely wishes they both work hard in Orange League.
