Grotle (Japanese: ハヤシガメ Hayashigame) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves from Turtwig starting at level 18, and evolves into Torterra starting at level 32.
Biology
Physiology
The shell possessed by Turtwig has grown to protect Grotle's entire head, back, and short tail, and, along with its change of coloration to yellow, now appears sectioned. Turtwig's sprout has migrated to Grotle's back and grown into full bushes, which may occasionally be seen carrying brown, acorn-like nuts. There are three long, brown ridges on the top of Grotle’s shell. Grotle’s lower jaw is yellow in coloration and has triangular extensions on the cheeks. Grotle’s feet are also colored yellow, with three claws.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Grotle has the ability to sense where pure water wells up.
Behavior
Grotle will sometimes start to roll around in dirt and mud. This allows minerals to seep in and make its shell even harder. Grotle may also carry acorn-like nuts on its bushes.
Habitat
Grotle live in forests, near sources of fresh water.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
Much like Turtwig, Grotle nourishes itself through photosynthesis. It may also eat berries like most Pokémon.
In the anime
Grotle made its debut appearance in Aiding the Enemy!, when Ash's Turtwig evolved. To date, no other Grotle has appeared in the anime.

In the manga
Diamond had a Grotle named Wig, which is his Turtwig's evolved form. It became stronger and (slightly) faster in this new form, but was scarcely used for battles, as it would have been ineffective against Gardenia's Grass-type Pokémon, though it still helped Platinum train for future gym battles. Soon afterwards, the Grotle became a Torterra alongside Chimhiko in Veilstone City fighting a legion of Galactic Grunts, and its power and endurance grew tremendously.

Trivia
- Grotle is the heaviest of any of the middle evolutions of the starters and heavier than all of the final stages of the starters except for Venusaur, Meganium and Torterra. Interestingly, all of these Pokémon are Grass-type.
- In the anime, Grotle is said to be slower now that it has evolved. However, Grotle has a higher base Speed than its pre-evolved form.
- Grotle is the only second stage Generation IV starter to evolve at level 32. Monferno and Prinplup both evolve at level 36.
- When Grotle evolves into Torterra, all of its stats increase by 20 points.
Origin
Grotle is based on a snapping turtle. It may also be base on a World Turtle, most likely Akupara. World Turtles are mythical turtles who carry worlds and universes on their backs. It also may be based on the minogame.
Name origin
"Grotle" comes from grove and turtle. Its Japanese name, Hayashigame, derives from 林 hayashi, grove, and 亀 kame, turtle.
In other languages
- German: Chelcarain - From Chelonia (the genus of the green turtle) and terrain.
- French: Boskara - From bosquet (forest) and carapace.
- Korean: 수풀부기 Supulbugi
- Chinese: 樹林龜 Shù Lín Guī - Literally "Forest turtle".
