Pokémon cries?

Should we add Pokémon cries to the Pokémon articles?--Starman125 20:18, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

It's been tried before, but it caused too many problems. It would still probably cause too much problems now.--Pokélova! 20:23, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
This has been discussed to death already. Jellotalk 20:24, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
We're going to try to get them put in as soon as possible. They've been sitting in a directory on the server for... jeez, at least a year. Last time we tried to put them in, the server exploded. Archaic's been wary of doing it since then. TTEchidna 20:35, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Just out of curiosity, what file format was used for the cries? That may have been the problem.--Starman125 20:54, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Over at de:, we have mp3 with the following syntax: {{#mp3:http://www.greenchu.de/nakigoe/025.mp3}}. I cannot figure out where that parser functions comes from, though.--Afrael talk 00:59, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I think having the files like Floatzel.net have their music files could work well. We might even eventually be able to put route/town/cave music on the pages!--Pokélova! 04:09, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh would I love to do that. Too bad Nintendo would destroy us for doing so. TTEchidna 23:01, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Why has no one said anything about the roars of Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, and Zekrom in the anime? Cause it should at least in the trivia say that: Dialga uses King Ghidorah's roar. Palkia uses Boga's roar and some of Godzilla's and King Ghidorah's roars. Giratina uses Mothra's roar. And Zekrom uses Megaguirus's roar. I know that its not that important but it is fact so cant it be put in their trivia section on thier pages? Am i the only one that thinks that it should?

Move Trivia

Should there be a trivia section for moves? For instance, only one Pokémon can learn Steel Wing by leveling up.--Chalkwriter 16:26, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

There are for some moves, but not all of them have any notable trivia to add, so there is no sub heading. If you think of notable trivia, then add the sub-heading and put it in. Thanks, Samjohn95 21:38, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Glitch Pokémon

Hi there. I remember when I was around nine, I used to play Pokémon Gold & Crystal, and I remember there was this cloning trick that could clone pokémon and the items that they held. Anyways, I began to notice if I did the right trick at a certain time, (or whatever it was, it has been a while) I managed to get a special type of Pokémon, the trainer. The trainer of course, had no moves and therefore could only struggle, but you could use TMs and everything. I remember having fun with that, but I can't find any info on this.- unsigned comment from Bublador (talkcontribs)

Pronunciation

I'm just thinking if on every Pokémon's page that we have their Pronunciation somewhere? like this:

Say: Sin-da-qwil

What do you think?--KayKay|Chat to me! 07:03, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

It's a good idea, but I believe we've had problems with adding pronunciations in the past because of people not agreeing on the "correct" pronunciation (also, sometimes there are conflicting pronunciations from different official sources) --ZestyCactus 07:06, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Oh oh then. I just though because some Pokémon I can't pronounce their names--KayKay|Chat to me! 07:21, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
If you have a look at the source of, say, Bulbasaur's page, you'll see this:
{{PokémonInfobox|
name=Bulbasaur |
pron=''bul''-buh-sore <ref>Barbo, Maria. ''The Official Pokémon Handbook''.
Scholastic Publishing, 1999. ISBN 0-439-10397-5</ref> |
jname=フシギダネ |
tmname=Fushigidane |

the "pron=" parameter is not coded into the infobox, so it does appear. But it's there on every Pokemon's page. たかはり 07:39, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it's coded in but because of the disagreements on pronunciation and no clear official source for many of them, it was decided to hide them all. If Nintendo or anyone ever releases an official pronunciation guide then we'll be able to put them back up. —darklordtrom 07:43, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Is whatever the pronunciation is in the English dub of the anime (and similarly the pronunciation in the Japanese dub for those not yet released over here) not enough to justify it? With the exception of the odd time where they've actually changed the pronunciation during it e.g. Regice... TheChrisD RantsEdits 13:46, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Artwork?!

I hate to be the silly one who starts the "What's going on?!!" discussion, but seriously, why have all the pictures of the Generation I Pokémon been changed to the old Red and Green artwork? Is it for an aniversary or something? T a r o m o n 10:59, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes. Anniversary of RB was yesterday, so Gen I Pokémon got Gen I art. But due to the server cache it took some a while to switch over, and I believe they should all be starting to switch back now, but again, that'll be whenever the server cache gets updated. Werdnae (talk) 11:24, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Actually, maybe it could be put on a switch, like with Gastrodon's forms, so it could switch between old and new artwork periodically. How's that sound? - unsigned comment from Missingno. Master (talkcontribs) 13:49, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

just a though...

i realise this is probably in the wrong place, but, as unlocking the generation IV nationaldex and requesting a trade on the GTS require only seeing a particular species of pokémon, would it make sense to include a section explaining where to see them. (and i am aware that the GTS has only around a week left). I know that people (granted they are few) have had problems viewing unown and riolu in DP for example.--Mr-connor 13:03, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Sizes on Pokémon pages..

Something that's been bugging me for a while. I've been manually going around and resizing the main art boxes at the top of each Pokémon page so they all match each other and look uniform. However, many times box sizes will still be off by a few pixels. Would there be anyway to code something that keeps them all the same size? [2] is an example of what Ii'm talking about. Basically, the box that surrounds the art.~★ cubicQUESTION 13:48, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Even if you make the width a certain size, the length will be different according to the size of the art. To get it uniform, you would have to make every file have some whitespace so it would be the same size. That won't happen though. The boxes don't really need to be uniform in size. Blake Talk·Edits 20:23, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Litsen...

First of all, I have a idea of a section in the pokemon's main page. Footprint. It'll be good. also, the Pronunciation topic above^^. We can take Right pronunciation from Pokemon Wiki. I know its cheating, but, Ill help us. --Ash's Infernape 11:41, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

The footprint is already in each Pokémon's infobox. And, we already discussed that the pronunciation caused conflict, and the Pokémon Wiki is far from a reliable source. So we probably won't be adding the pronunciation to each's Pokémon's page. たかはり 11:08, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
By the way I think you were trying to say Listen not Litsen?--KayKay|Chat to me! 11:09, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
Well, Pronunciation is what admins can do when the wiki lets locked. also, wouldn't they need help adding 150 and more pokemon?--Ash's Infernape 11:41, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
Pronunciation is conflicting. It isn't just hard work. For example, Bonsly was pronounced with an ē once, then with an ī in another time. One was in the movie, the other in the anime, I've just forgotten which. Turtwig's A-B-Cs (talk | contribs) 11:58, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
Oh Really? We All Know That Charmander is pronounced Chaar-man-der. Easy Enough?? Just search on google for pokemon pronunciation.--Ash's Infernape 12:05, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, no Google searching, thanks. The official sources (Official Handbooks, Anime, and Video Games) don't always agree on pronunciations of Pokémon names. Now, if the official sources all agree at one point, then we will add them. But until then, they're not going on the species pages. - Kogoro | Talk to me - 12:16, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Okay Then. Moving to the next topic. What About Something at the Top of The Pokemon pics To Change the Picture into other generation art or to a Different form?--Ash's Infernape 12:25, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Most form changing Pokémon have their forms rotated based on the current time (see Arceus, then refresh the page). As for different generations, the infoboxes are set to display it on certain days—for example, on the anniversary of Red and Blue the Pokémon pages displayed their Red and Blue artwork (for those that have it). --SnorlaxMonster 12:44, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Doesn't look like the servers are being nice

No, I'm not geting 504s (or, if I am, FireFox is hiding them); I'm getting something even worse: pages not loading at all. A couple of days ago, I was going to come here to get a small amount of information, and it took ages to do so (so long in fact that I just got it O_O). I think the servers are being overstressed - despite the fact that I was getting good ping times off of 10 pings to the site's router (if there is one), I couldn't load any pages - not even robots.txt! That is just a simple text document, and it wouldn't even load! I would start the lockdown soon, as the closer to release we get, the more activity we are likely to get.

I consider myself lucky I could even get on right now. --TruePikachu 06:37, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

The fifth generation Pokemon are invading Bulbapedia and interfering with the system! I haven't actually noticed any problems yet though, which is strange. T a r o m o n 20:38, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Finally!

as i mentioned Form changing above, We can use A method for pokemon with 2 different forms like giratina and shellos

Method: All you guys saw Avatar, Everyone Saw. Now See The Avatar Wiki's Jake Sully Article. There is a button below the pic to change the Picture into Human/Avatar. We can use that Method.--Ash's Infernape 16:48, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

That's a really good idea actually, I think it would be better than the Pokemon's form just changing periodically. Perhaps now Bulbapedia is being upgraded for the fifth generation, it would be a convenient time for recoding the articles. T a r o m o n 20:36, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
I dunno. Shaymin is also two formes, and changes with time. Shellos and Giratina, by the way, are not random. It's based on the hours. And unfortunately, that just changes the infobox picture; there are several things that change for forme changers. Unless your Ground-type moves miss against Altered Forme Giratina. What's that? They don't? But you can only use Earthquake five times? TTEchidna 04:11, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Wikimon has a more extensive one that allows you to toggle the whole box, for example in the Agumon article, click the tabs. It even integrates the table of contents into it. Pretty clever. - MK (t/c) 04:57, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
see, only arceus has several things that needed to be changed. what about others?--Ash's Infernape 07:52, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
What about Mebukijika and Genesect (yes, Genesect has other formes (I think five or six?)) Zekasaur 10:53, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
I also support the toggle idea. By the way, it has been mentioned in Arbok's Pokédex entries that it has at least six different patterns, of which two have appeared in official game art. Maybe it would be worthwhile to also toggle these two the same way? --BlackySully 09:05, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
I say we just stick with actual forme changes, and not include design differences between canons. PDL 14:24, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Metric tags in Pokédex entries

All pokedex entries use the imperial units of measurement from the US translation. I suggest adding tags with the metric counterparts for two reasons:

1 - the original Japanese entries use metric units, so it could be seen as "more canon".

2 - there are international users of Bulbapedia (me included) that are not used to imperial units.

For example, the final sentence in Magneton's entry in Yellow could be: It raises the temperature by 3.6F degrees within 3,300 feet.

If the staff agrees, I'm willing to go through all Pokedex entries and add the metric values. I know enough Japanese to easily get the official values from the pokedex entries listed on the Japanese wiki, assuming those are correct.

--BlackySully 09:05, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Metric system seems like a pretty simple and straightforward thing to include, it's merely a big job to go through everything and add the metric equivalent. Perhaps starting small, with say the Pokémon infobox only for now, and work our way up (every infobox should list the Pokémon's height and weight, so it's the most prominent use of the imperial system). Pokédex entries are also pretty simple, but I'd also say they're the less important area to work on (no complaints if you want to fix them all yourself, however). -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 11:28, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Each Pokemon already have both their imperial and metric height and weight listed in their infobox, except for Generation 5, because their imperial values are not yet officially known. So pokedex entries are the most important area left to work on, as far as I can see. --BlackySully 13:37, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Unless someone else has a big complaint about it, I don't see why you can't go ahead and update those, in that case. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 14:47, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
I have done 101 out of 493 for now. I may have missed a few in scanning all those entries. --BlackySully 23:59, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

3D Artwork

This is something that's been on my mind for a while now, but I couldn't bring it up due to the lockdown. Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to possibly include 3D images of Pokémon and Pokémon moves, like what's done for anime? It could be done in a seperate section or sub-section of the articles. Oh, and I don't mean updating every time a new 3D game comes out; I mean adding images for each time a move or Pokémon has appeared in a 3D game, like images of Pidgeot from its appearances in Pokémon Stadium through Pokémon Battle Revolution. I don't know if this has been brought up before, but is this notion a good idea?--Black Yin Zekrom 00:06, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Although i don't know much, but taking 3D Pics will be hard and i don't think its a very good idea.--Ash's Infernape 11:07, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Well, I don't quite know how it's done, but you don't take 3D pics by using a camera or something. The quality of the 3D images here prove that.--Black Yin Zekrom 15:25, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

May I direct your attention here MaverickNate 18:09, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Clearer distinction between "natural" and Dream World abilities.

I think the distinction between pokémon that only have certain abilities through the Pokémon Dream World and those that don't can be made clearer. For example, on pages of separate abilities there is just one table with normal and PDW pokémon all mixed up, while it would be easier to make separate tables for both. I think this would help both users that own Pokémon Black or White and those that don't. Besides that we could also make a category for "Abilities exclusive to Pokémon Dream World", like Harvest. --BlackySully 00:22, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

On the separate pages, they are specfically listed in a separate column that says "Dream World ability". That seems separate enough. MaverickNate 00:24, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes, but I think it would be easier if for example you are looking for a pokémon that has a certain ability, that you don't have to go through a list of which half of the pokémon are Dream World pokémon. Even for Dream World users like me pokémon in wild and in Dream World are two completely separate things. But yeah, it's not that necessary. --BlackySully 09:32, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Bulbanews

Bulbanews is a different wiki altogether. Though they're both part of Bulbagarden, both Bulbapedia and Bulbanews have their own front pages. The information you're looking for is on Bulbanews's front page and if you have any other questions about it, it'd make sense to ask on that talk page rather than this one. here's a link, for convenience Kanjo 20:26, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

What Kanjo said is correct, but to answer your question, anyone is allowed to report news to Bulbanews. After submission, an admin or columnist needs to move it out of the draft namespace and into the mainspace. --SnorlaxMonster 00:01, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

I think the Ark in its name could be cause it can transform into lots of pokemon like an ark of pokemon and the reason i posted it here cause i cant post it on Zoroark's article . --Vlade 16:12, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

First of all, if you can't post in an article, inquire in the article's talk page (i.e. Talk:Zoroark (Pokémon)), not Talk: Main Page. Secondly, that's a real stretch: that's not an actual definition of the word ark, it's just a vague metaphor. --AndyPKMN 21:07, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Is it for the Japanese anime writer? If so, I suppose Chimecho is more appropriate than Lugia, considering how the little windchime links to places like Mt. Pyre and Sendoff Spring. It can be in greyscale if desired. Besides, what is more favourable aesthetically is that one may include Chingling too, instead of Lugia all over the place. Rxhar 09:46, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

EV Listings

I was just thinking of a very useful idea. On the pages for each route, cave, etc, where the wild Pokémon are listen, I was thinking we should add another column after each Pokémon and say "1 Speed," or "2 Attack," or something. That, paired with encounter and level rates would help a great deal in EV training for all different levels. - unsigned comment from Igglybuff63 (talkcontribs)

Well, I admit, this would be useful to some people, but this is an encyclopedia, not a walkthrough. Honestly, I don't see why you can't go to the Pokémon's page and check. I'm not for it, but I'm not exactly saying NO. --Si6x12 03:01, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
I agree completely, however, it would be a nice little touch on the page for convenience. I'm not one of them, but I know some people have incredibly slow computers, and I can easily imagine the frustration of those who have slow connections along with a desire to EV train. Igglybuff63 14:00, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm thinking no, but I do see a use in it. Perhaps Project Walkthroughs would be a good place to ask. --SnorlaxMonster 14:07, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Putting every possible bit of information is dumb. TTEchidna 08:04, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
But that's not what we'd be doing now, is it? We wouldn't be putting their number, or Dex color, or Egg group, or anything like that, just the EV(s) they give. - unsigned comment from Igglybuff63 (talkcontribs)
The number should already be there. --SnorlaxMonster 12:50, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
No, I'm talking about on the route pages. - unsigned comment from Igglybuff63 (talkcontribs)
Don't make me go on a rant about users and clicking links. If you plan to EV train, then just look up the Pokémon that give EVs in whatever. We're an encyclopedia, not an EV training guide. Do some of your own research, dude. TTEchidna 09:15, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
This isn't at all a matter of laziness. Heck, I'd be willing to go around and do a ton of the work, assuming I could figure out how to code it (which I can't) It's just a nice touch of convenience for users, you know? I mean, I'm fine if we don't do it, it's just a suggestion, after all. Igglybuff63 04:39, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Redirection Pages

Do we really need those redirection pages with one Pokémon used by a character, the TCG link, and the Pokémon link? We already have the Pokémon used by a character and it's TCG links on the page. I understand the ones for like Pikachu, but ones like Mr. Mime and Gengar don't need to be there, do they? DarthMartian7 03:09, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

This is already being discussed on the forums, so please be patient. ~ solaris 03:13, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

What to do with Dream World artwork.

Currently we use some to replace the Sugimori artwork, but what to do when said artwork is avaiable?. Sincerely i thing it would be a waste to just leave the DW artwork floating alone. Do you agree? We should do something with it. --EzekielMaple 18:06, 15 November 2010 (UTC) Sorry, forgot signature

It would be a waste. Also, how come we don't put up the old artwork on the Pokémon's page? It seems a waste not to include it on the page (especially when some trivia refers to it). Teshigigas [Talk] 18:29, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Over at Zelda wikithey use a code of sorts that makes a picture change every time you refresh the page. It seemed to use a template called {{RandomLinkImage}} for this page. I think I've seen simeler on userpages. It varied page to page. --Pika3323 20:34, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Maybe each Pokemon's page can feature a gallery of their art from all games. Just a random thought. Blake Talk·Edits 21:17, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Eventually. There's always an issue with doing that though. And that is how many damned exceptions there are. TTEchidna 09:13, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
Um, doesn't each Pokémon page link to a gallery anyway? --Landfish7 21:00, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Em, we could show the artwork in the pages for "special" cases, like ivysaur. Ivysaur has purple colored eyes in the anime and Dream World--EzekielMaple 22:44, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Trading pre-Unova

Some pokemon such as Bulbasaur say that you have to "trade" to get the Pokémon when you actually have to get it through Pokéshift, Dream World, or both? When are we going to change this? —♫Zekasaur♫ 03:04, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

It will likely be changed as soon as someone enters that specific information into the tables. If I recall correctly, the template defaults to saying "trade" if no data is entered. --TruePikachu 04:58, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Preview

You know how it seems that everyone forgets to use the preview when they first come on? Well on NWiki, they have something that makes you show preview, and I was wondering if we could use that here. Gliscorguy54 01:30, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

I actually find that incredibly annoying on NWiki. If you are going around making minor edits, such as relinking, it just gets in the way. I'm pretty sure there is an option here to turn it on in preferences if you like it. --SnorlaxMonster 02:10, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

There is nothing that can be done about this. It is just the archives not synchronizing with Bulbapedia. All we can do is wait for it to fix itself. --SnorlaxMonster 03:28, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Bulbapedia:Project Fandom --SnorlaxMonster 14:00, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
Just to point out, a heck of a lot of wikis hold pages on notable fan projects. I don't mean projects like "my mate Billy made a hack", but rather projects that caused controversy, were published or otherwise became noteworthy. I think Apokelypse caused enough of a stir, a long with a heck of a lot of controversy about Pokémon canon. One has to commend the whole publicity hoax where the creators staged a theatre viewing of it, too. But on the flip side, seeing as this wiki doesn't even have a page on James Turner, it'd be silly to add a page on something less notable. Meh. Candy for all. Me, Hurray! 20:00, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

A search bar?

Has Bulbapedia ever considered having a bar that would be used similar to the Google toolbar? It could have a place to search for an article on Bulbapedia, maybe even have a link to the home page, recent changes, bulbawiki forum, the archives, etc. This would mean easy access to not just the wiki, but so that people with the toolbar could get to a specific pafe faster as well! --Landfish7 22:16, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

You mean a Bulbapedia Toolbar for a browser? That's something to think about, I guess. Maybe a Firefox addon or something. —darklordtrom 22:19, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes. That's what I meant. I'm not sure if it is even possible but if it was it would be very useful for viewing and editing Bulbapedia. --Landfish7 03:34, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
I would recommend bringing this up on the BulbaWiki forum. --SnorlaxMonster 00:47, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Yep. We do it all the time. If look in the hidden code of Template:Main Page, you can see all the alternate ones. Except that Bulbabot is not suitable for those kinds of edits. It can't select a portion of a string (i.e. it can't pick a "Giaru" out of the mittle of a template like "Giaru"). It was all done by human editors. And generally there are 50-100 pages that need changing, and with ctrl+F and copypaste a single user can easily do two or three a minute. Animated G5 Sprites...

Would it be possible to put in the full, animated versions of the sprites from Generation 5? Generation 2 and 3 sprites are animated... I was also wondering if this would just be too much trouble or would overload the server. You can find the sprites here. (good website, I think that they're all accurate. Whoever made it did an awesome job). Also, those sprites wouldn't have to be used, it's just the resource that I found. the files are .gif files... Thanks!!! Bapplesauce 02:51, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Some of the BW sprites are animated PNGs. We don't want to use GIFs for Generation IV and V sprites. You have to have Firefox in order to see the animation because some browsers don't support it. --ケンジガール 02:57, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, that's right- I always used to find some other animated images on here that wouldn't animate... Okay. Well, if anyone finds another way... or can get more animated PNGs... thanks. Bapplesauce 03:40, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Just so you know, you don't have to have Firefox; Opera works as well. However, I think those are the only major browsers that support APNG (IE and Chrome don't, I don't know about Safari). --SnorlaxMonster 12:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it should. And since it's been confirmed, it now does. Werdnae (talk) 21:29, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

I think it should be the north american one.Wasent it that way with platinum?KylleyFab4Fan 23:15, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

The European date is the closest thing we have to the English release, I don't know what's wrong with that. Jellotalk 23:18, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
To clarify what Jello said, the date we use for the countdown is the first official English release date. For Platinum it was the North American date, as the North American date was before the European date. For Black and White the European date is first, so we are counting down to that date. If, by some chance, the next main series game(s) is/are released in Australia and New Zealand first (I wish), then we will count down to that date instead. There will be no preference for one English-speaking location over another. Werdnae (talk) 01:48, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
Would putting up multiple countdowns overload the server?--Celibi25 18:13, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
I don't think that's what Werdnae meant. I think he meant just changing the one countdown to reflect the first official English release date. --だにえる - 千九百九十三 20:52, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I get it now.--Celibi25 02:11, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I was actually meaning changing the existing one (even if only once it had expired). However the same applies for multiple countdowns. The bigger issue (bigger than the server load) is that if we are going to have more than one countdown, we must then include a countdown for every English release, since we aren't being biased towards any one region. So we would probably end up with five or six, rather than two, and that would be too many. Not server-load too many, although it could prove problematic, but too many space-wise on the main page. If you wish to put your own countdown on your userpage, I remember seeing a template for it floating around in someone's userspace.
The reason we are doing the first English release, rather than the American release, it that this is an Engligh-language site, rather than a specifically North American site. Although the servers are in the US, our webmaster, Archaic, lives in Australia. To make a special case for the North American release would appear as a great big insult to all our non-American users, since we've never done anything like that for the European release when it was second. Werdnae (talk) 02:27, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Not to mention the fact that this is the first time that the European release date is before the North American one.--Celibi25 02:02, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

It's probably a session loss error, causing it to behave as if you were logged out. If clicking back and trying again doesn't fix it, then logging out and then back in again should. The tech people are aware of the problem, but haven't yet been able to find what's causing it so they can fix it. Werdnae (talk) 02:27, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Logging me out?!

It keeps randomly logging me out! It's really annoying when, say, I've done an edit it won't let me save, but then sometimesI'm logged back in when I click on another page! What's going on? And before you ask, it's not my computer, it does it on the laptop as well. --Juzey (Talk) 11:58, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Sounds like a cookie problem to me. Also this isn't related to the Main Page, which is what this talk is for. It asks at the top for you to consider posting items unrelated to the Main Page, on the forum. You'd likely get a better response there anyway. Smashman 12:06, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
It's either a cookie problem or a session loss problem. The second is an issue that has been going on for a while, but the tech guys haven't been able to figure out what's causing it in order to fix it. If it happens again, click back and try again. It should go through after a few attempts. Werdnae (talk) 01:24, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Nope, we had this done before. It was shortly removed afterwards as there was many conflicts from various sources on how to pronounce it. --CoolPikachu! 01:12, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Wait, hold on, I think this is a great idea. Pokémon Battle Revolution has all the Pokémon names through Gen. IV pronounced like they're supposed to be. PBR is a canon game made correctly by Nintendo, and 4Kids has has some inaccuracies in the past. I think if a conflict arises we should just consult PBR. La-dee-FLIPPIN dah...

You DO know Nintendo Power posted the rest of the english names, don't you? And that Serebii is using them! Don't believe me? Check it out yourself on Serebii.net. I will expect you guys to use these names from now on! - (User:Oricalu|Oricalu) - unsigned comment from Oricalu (talkcontribs)

Unfortunately, what you expect to happen is not something that will happen, as has been stated numerous times on the fifth generation Pokémon talk pages (Janovy rings a bell), it is not known where this list came from, and as a result is not a reliable source of information regardless of the correctness of the current information it contains. If the list did appear in Nintedo Power (which Serebii hasn't stated per your argument) I'd say the editorial board would then make another decision. Until such a time that the names are seen used in official sources (Nintendo themselves for example, which contained the most recent batch of English names) the pages won't be moved. As per what is the editorial boards decision. --Spriteit 00:29, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
What issue do you or Serebii have that this list comes from? I have the February issue and it only lists the ones we have moved. --P S Yライダー 04:14, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Every name on that list so far has been true. Just sayin! - [User:Oricalu|Oricalu]- unsigned comment from Oricalu (talkcontribs)

Just because they have been right so far doesn't mean they are all right. We will wait for official conformation. Also, next time you post sign your post. --だにえる - 千九百九十三 16:53, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Once again, all the names revealed today were the SAME FLIPPIN NAMES on Serebii! Every last one I knew! New names aren't that fun when you know them, so let's just use the new list! I'm tellin ya, Serebii and the rest of the world are right! - Oricalu

Yeah, I'm with this guy. How many names have to be revealed before you all realize that the list can't possibly be fake? And don't say "all of them", either. I mean, Serebii updated with the names, that should be good enough for anybody. - unsigned comment from Missingno. Master (talkcontribs) 13:48, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Finally! Someone who agrees with me! - Oricalu

At least update Meloetta's Form Names; Voice form is "Aria Form" and Step form is "Pirouette Form" - Oricalu Oricalu 14:05, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Even though there is a list of all the names and it's been correct so far (and will probably be right about the other names), the remaining names on the list have not been confirmed officially by Nintendo, which means it's not officially canon yet. Remember, this is a wiki, not a fansite. Even though I don't think Serebii made a bad decision about trusting the list, but Serebii is not "official" and can take the risk of getting a few names wrong. - User:Togelover

Just because Serebii says they are real does not mean we will put him. He is not and will not be an "official" source because the names have been confirmed so far. Unless we get some type of non-fan site confirmation, we will post them. Until then you can wait. --CoolPikachu! 23:59, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Another random bit of trivia about B/W

I saw the "Did You Know" thing about B/W getting a 40/40 in the magazine, and I also wanted to note that they got a 8.75 in Game Informer, which is the highest I'VE seen a Pokemon game get in that magazine. - unsigned comment from Tailzfoxy96 (talkcontribs)

However the significance of the 40/40 is that Famitsu (the magazine in question) very rarely gives perfect scores whereas this other rating is not a perfect score and no matter how high the score or how low previous scores have been it is still not trivia-worthy. --だにえる - 千九百九十三 17:05, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Kinda, I asked how they got through the Captcha. Now, I'm asking why the new bot account rate seems to be increasing and if there is some sort of pattern i.e. everytime new games are released. --Landfish7 01:31, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, duh. If a game is being released, then there is a great influx of readers. With the good comes the bad. Blake Talk·Edits 16:46, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Okay, well it appears the spam bots have been creating a TON of weight loss articles. It's not like the bunches of speculation we've also been getting. Since the spambots have a common factor in their spam, then it's clear that they are all related somehow. Whether they are being created by a company or business is beyond me, but this is beginning to be a bit too much like a forum discussion, so we should just let the admins handle it and get back to editing the mainspace before getting into a big off-topic discussion. --Landfish7 21:53, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
From reading a MediaWiki users' forum and asking operators of other wikis, it seems that someone has just written bot code and is in the process of sending the bots through a list of wikis he's found somewhere. We are not the only wiki being targeted with this kind of action. (And to be honest, I'm surprised the bots can land any edits, given the amount of session loss errors around... and please no one start complaining about that now; we know they exist and we're working on it.) —darklordtrom 10:58, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
What about this idea: Making it mandatory to have a registered email address to edit this wiki. The reason why there are so many spambots is because an email address isnt required to edit the wiki. If somehow the Mediawiki code can be changed in order to make email registration mandatory.--PresidentMudkip 01:05, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
As far as I'm aware, email address confirmation has been required to edit mainspace pages for a long time now, since before I joined in late 2008. These bots must therefore be able to confirm their email addresses. Werdnae (talk) 01:38, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Pokemon Game Synopsis?

I've scoured Bulbapedia and google for the synopsis of the Pokemon games but can't find them at all! Can anyone point me to them? Eg, How each games unfolds and how they link into eachother (I know there's a lot to do with gen I in the gen II games) Thanks! Dazzaclarke 20:06, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

I believe the closest you can get to a synopsis of the story is rather each article's Plot section such as this. OR For a walk through the plot of each game you can look here: Walkthroughs. --Landfish7 23:50, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
You could also try history of the Pokémon world. --SnorlaxMonster 00:54, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't Black and White come out on the 6th? Why does it say it's out on the 4th? - Bpc908 00:56, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Because it comes out in Europe on the 4th, which is today, a couple of days ahead of when it comes out in the US, which is the 6th. --ジェダイの騎士デジタルテレビ 01:01, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Let's count down to March 6 now!

Why not? TorchicBlaziken (talkedits) 02:19, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Uh, what would be the point of that? It is only two days away, and the games are out in English now, since they are out in Europe. It just so happened with Gen V that Europe got the first English language games, instead of the US. --ジェダイの騎士デジタルテレビ 02:51, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
This is why it's not going to happen. Full stop. End. Of. Story. Werdnae (talk) 05:03, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Small Idea

Is it planned exactly what time the website would be lockdowned during game releases? If so maybe you could post a warning on the website banner around what time the website would be locked if possible so users making large edits won't lose all of their work? Just a idea. --Pokemaster97 01:48, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

If you haven't figure it out by now, it's usually during the time of the release of a new game. It's usually locked down to reduce server stress. Jellotalk 01:59, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Yes I realize that but the website was blocked on last friday or so it was fine at 2:30 but blocked at around 3:13 it's very hard to know when it's gonna lock down with no warning. --Pokemaster97 02:02, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
We don't have a schedule for when the site is locked. It's unfortunate, and we don't do it to inconvenience Bulbapedia editors. When the traffic to Bulbapedia spikes to such a rate which can trigger server outages, we close off editing. This vastly reduces the number of pages being loaded, therefore reducing server use levels. This may happen at any time, especially around new games (although we have had work done to our network of servers recently which should hopefully reduce this in future). I apologise, but there is no way we can give any kind of warning for locking the site. —darklordtrom 02:06, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Okay I just wanted to know if it was possible. I know all about the server stress and the chaos it takes to run the site around high traffic times. Thank you for anwsering. --Pokemaster97 02:09, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Bulba-style templates

I see that you are updating many generic templates with a style that fits Bulbawikis better, such as the one for the contents list on many articles. Are you planning on doing the same for the image and category templates as well? ポケモンあいこうか 16:50, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Emerald animated sprites out of whack

Can somebody please explain why all of the animated sprites from Emerald version are playing really fast? --FiMbUlWiNtEr2O|2 01:49, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

They look normal to me. What browser are you using? —Minimiscience 02:33, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm using Google Chrome. --FiMbUlWiNtEr2O|2 23:01, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
A recent update to Chrome sent them faster for whatever reason.—★Pika3323 23:05, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
It appears that the Emerald sprites are also sped up in Mozilla Firefox for some reason; I viewed the pages of the Hoenn starters to inspect the occurrence, and the problem may be most evident with Whiscash's page, as I recall that its "flopping" is typically one of the longer Emerald animations...Fenyx4 05:44, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
Firefox, Google chrome, and Opera do this, don't know why. =P Firefox, and Opera support APNG, maybe there is a sacrifice for APNG support?—★Pika3323 12:40, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Moves in Triple Battles

I know you have what positions moves target in Triple Battles but it's not entirely clear. I can't tell whether it means it will hit all 3 opponents or just the 2 non diagonal ones infront of you. If it could be more specific as in which Pokemon it will hit if you are in the centre and which Pokemon you will hit if you are at the side. Thanks. Lucky V4.0 10:41, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

The diagrams should help, but unfortunately we are half-way through updating them. Most moves which say that they can hit any opponent can only hit adjacent opponents. --SnorlaxMonster 10:48, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Moving Sprites for Black and White

I have seen how on this site and many others how the Crystal and Emerald sprites move on their list of sprites but ones on DPP and HGSS don't. I can understand because they only flash between 2 separate sprites but for Black and White the sprites are constantly in motion and I have seen moving images of them before on the internet so I don't think it will be a problem to add them to the pages. Lucky V4.0 10:44, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Most sprites from DPPtHGSSBW are animated. However, they are animated PNG files, so cannot be seen animated in all browsers. They cannot be seen in Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, while they can in Mozilla Firefox and Opera. --SnorlaxMonster 10:48, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Correction: Most sprites from BW should be animated, but I don't think all of them have been uploaded yet. In particular, I believe we lack the animated sprites for a number of National Dex Pokémon. Unfortunately, it's a bit more complicated than just adding ones you find on the internet: For one, most of the ones you find elsewhere might be the wrong format, and we would also want to get them directly from the game in order to make sure they're completely accurate. --AndyPKMN (talk) 12:32, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Diamond and Pearl themed Main Page

The page appears to be a Diamond & Pearl theme today - any particular reason? ----Cycloneblaze (user - talk) 13:51, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

I would guess it's because Diamond and Pearl has been out for 4 years today in North America. --Carmen (Talk | Contributions) 14:02, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, Carmenstar is right. The main page usually changes its layout in times like these, this time is for the fourth anniversary of Diamond and Pearl. Masatoshitalk 14:14, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, well, Sonic News Network doesn't allow irrelevant info, saying it's not needed! Who's right? magikarp123193 21:53, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, this isn't Sonic News Network. Things work differently between Wiki's. Ataro 21:58, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
If Kenji-Girl undid you it's probably because your in the wrong. Not saying that she's always right, but she has been on the wiki for a long time so there's obviously a reason. There's really no reason to continue this conversation. --Pokemaster97 22:03, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Shorthand route naming system

Would it be a good idea to have a shorthand method of referring to routes, for example

  • R1 links to route 1
  • UR1 links to Unova route 1

Is this a good idea? Mattrules161 11:00, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Too many things can be considered "R". I know, for example, that the Japanese cards have recently been listing Rare as R on cards and UltraRare as UR. MaverickNate 11:29, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, but this would always be followed by a number to avoid confusion. If needed a disambiguation page could be placed at R to link to Route and TCG, same at UR except link to UnovaMattrules161 12:17, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
UR1 is Reshiram, UR2 is Tornadus, UR3 is Pikachu, UR4 is Zekrom, UR5 is Thundurus, UR6 is Pikachu. This is just one example, plus R1 could also mean the Unova Route 1, since that is what it is called in the game. MaverickNate 12:20, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
The laziness expands. Is it that difficult to type out the word "route"? TTEchidna 00:02, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
If you want to be more efficient, you could just type "1" into the search box, and then look about halfway down the page... Tails0600 05:50, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion

I'm not sure where to suggest this so I'll ask here. Currently Smeargle isn't added in any egg move table, since Smeargle can pass down any egg move to ground egg group Pokémon I think it should be added. I found it annoying when it took me so long to figure out that Scraggy can have Dragon Dance and Drain Punch in the same moveset with Smeargle, I don't think people generally check a Pokémon's egg group when breeding egg moves because that's what the egg move tables for, also it would be more accurate to have Smeargle. Pikiwyn talk 16:42, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Each move only has the most direct way of learning the move in the father sections. Smeargle can't learn the move directly, it must learn it from something else. The reason this is done is to prevent the father sections from becoming too massive and bloated. Werdnae (talk) 19:47, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Pokémon Grim?

The restaurant my Dad works at has a Japanese family that comes a lot. They always bring a Pokémon game. One night while working, my dad saw a box for Pokémon Grim Version. Has anyone heard of it? higejolly 23:03, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

No. It's probably a fake/hack/pirated game. Jellotalk 23:24, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Did it look like this? http://www.vgboxart.com/view/36645/pokemon.grim.version/?replies=5ISB 23:27, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Only my dad knows, but what he explained did sound like Darkrai. Also, the box was in Japanese. higejolly 00:53, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, it's fake. This discussion is now over. Jellotalk 00:54, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Now I saw it at the store (a person carrying it)! Also in Japanese. --higejolly 21:56, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

It's fake. What is so hard to understand about that? Lots of pirated games appear in stores. It doesn't make official, nor legit. Whatever you are seeing is a fake and pirated. Now, please drop this discussion. Jellotalk 22:16, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
