===Generation IV===
The route basicly remains the same and is blocked in its entrance from Fuchsia like in Generation II; however, this was caused by rocks that fell from the eruption of the [[Cinnabar Island]] volcano.
The route was completely re-styled in Generation IV. The row of rocks lining the series of cliffs has been removed, and many rocks have been strewn around the beach. The beach itself is also much thinner. Like in Gold and Silver, there is a gatehouse splitting the route from Fuchsia City.

Route 19 is a predominantly north-south water route in southern central Kanto. Its northern terminus is at Fuchsia City. Its south end is at Route 20 east of the Seafoam Islands.

Route description

Heading south from Fuchsia, Route 19 becomes a dual carriageway, as a series of ledges and a rock wall separate the route into a southbound-only west half and a dual-direction east half. After three ledges, the rock wall ends and the route is reunited on an unnamed beach. In Generation I and Generation III, two Swimmers patrol the beach for trainers to battle. Just south of the trainers is the Route 19 signpost, located on the shore of the ocean.

Route 19 turns west at its southern terminus, becoming Route 20.

Differences among generations

Each Generation has added their own signature touch to Route 19, each time maintaining the essence of the route.

Generation I

In Pokémon Yellow, a house was placed on the beach below Fuchsia. Inside, a surfer named "Dude" allows trainers to partake in a mini-game entitled Pikachu's Beach if the trainer has a Surfing Pikachu. The surfer, as well as the Surfing Pikachu premise, mirrors that of The Pi-Kahuna.

Generation II

When trainers first approach Route 19 from the eastern terminus, the land portion of the route is under construction for renovations. After entering Route 19 from the west, the construction will be completed.

Lastly, a guard house was added between Fuchsia and the beach.

Generation III

All aspects of the route were restyled in Generation III, as the rock columns that bordered the route in the first two Generations were replaced by a series of prototypical rock formations. Also, the beaches were given a rounded look to enhance their appearance.

Generation IV

The route was completely re-styled in Generation IV. The row of rocks lining the series of cliffs has been removed, and many rocks have been strewn around the beach. The beach itself is also much thinner. Like in Gold and Silver, there is a gatehouse splitting the route from Fuchsia City.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Route 19 debuted in What a Dragonite and in You Know.. Articuno in the Red, Green & Blue arc, where Red was looking for the HM Surf using his Item Finder with his Poliwrath and his Krabby so he could get over to the Seafoam Islands. There is a Pokémon Center nearby which Red contacted Professor Oak about the Hm's. Red later found the HM but it was guarded by a Dragonite. Red then thought out a plan and got it out of the water and battled Red's Snorlax but they were to heavy and the rocks broke damaging the HM and making Red drown.

Before Red blacked out, he thought he saw a mermaid, but when he woke up, he had been saved by Misty and her Starmie and her Gyarados.
