Fling (Japanese: なげつける Throw) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation IV.
Effect
The power of Fling is determined by the held item. The move will fail if the user has no held item, or if the item is not one listed below. After using Fling, the item disappears--this can be problematic if Fling throws an item that can only be obtained once.
The power of Fling is calculated as:
If the user hits its opponent with a Berry, the effect of the Berry will be activated. Additionally, some items will cause other effects when used with Fling:
Item | Effect |
---|---|
Flame Orb | Causes a Burn |
King's Rock | Causes the target to Flinch |
Light Ball | Paralyzes the target |
Mental Herb | Cures Infatuation |
Poison Barb | Poisons the target |
Razor Fang | Causes the target to Flinch |
Toxic Orb | Badly poisons the target |
White Herb | Fixes stat loss on the target |
Fling will fail if used by an Arceus holding a Plate or a Giratina holding the Griseous Orb, though neither Pokémon can normally have this move. It will also fail if used when the Pokémon is holding any type of Poké Ball.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon
The user seizes the nearest enemy Pokémon and throws it into another enemy, dealing 10 damage to both parties.

Trivia
- Fling, along with Fake Out is the only move that has a 100% chance of causing flinching, if the held item is a King's Rock or Razor Fang.
- Fling will fail if the user is holding a Poké Ball or any variant. This is probably to prevent confusion should a flung Poké Ball hit a wild Pokémon and do damage rather than try to catch it.
