Trivia

  • Despite being based on a fish and living in the water, Maggyo is not of the Water-type.
    • Its Pokédex entries state it can reside in mud as well, despite taking super effective damage to both Ground- and Water-types.
  • Maggyo is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 471.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Maggyo.
  • Maggyo is the only Electric-type Pokémon immune to Electric-type attacks, excluding abilities.
  • Despite being the Trap Pokémon, It cannot have the abilities Arena Trap, Shadow Tag, or Magnet Pull, or learn the moves Mean Look, Spider Web, or Block.

Origin

Maggyo seems to be based on a flounder or dab combined with an electric ray. It may also be based on the stargazer, another fish that spends most of its time buried in the sea bottom and can make electric discharges when disturbed.

Name origin

Its name is likely a combination of マッド maddo, mud, and 魚 gyo, fish. It might also be derived from maguro, tuna.
