Umbreon (Japanese: ブラッキー Blacky) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves from Eevee via Happiness during the night or when around a Moon Shard.
Biology
Physiology
Umbreon is the Pokémon that Eevee evolves into when it has gained a complete trust of its trainer at night or when around a Moon Shard. It has a black body with a pair of crimson cat-like eyes and yellow bands on its ears and tail. Umbreon's forehead and legs have yellow rings on them. Its rings are said to glow at night.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Umbreon can spray a poisonous sweat whenever it gets agitated. As a Template:Type2 Pokémon, Umbreon can learn several moves with various disruptive effects, such as Taunt or Snatch. Despite its appearance, Umbreon is a Pokémon of strong endurance. Since Umbreon is a fully evolved Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.
Behavior
Umbreon stalks prey silently at night. As it awaits its victims' approach, the yellow rings on its body begin to glow. During the day, they blink on and off.
Habitat
Umbreon are normally found in dark areas such as thick forests, but are most commonly found under the care of people.

In Volume 14, Karen is seen with an Umbreon as the cornerstone of her team, as in the games. It apparently evolved from the Eevee she has had since childhood.
Greta of the Battle Arena is seen using an Umbreon in her battles with Guile Hideout and Emerald, during which it easily defeats his Dusclops before falling to his Sudowoodo, which goes on to win the match, earning him the Guts Symbol.

Trivia
- Umbreon is tied with Vaporeon and Leafeon for the tallest Eevee evolution.
- Although it is often mentioned that it is able to spray poison, the only Template:Type2 move Umbreon can learn is Toxic, and only through TM06.
- Umbreon was the first and only pure Template:Type2 until the introduction of Poochyena, Mightyena, and Absol in Generation III.
- Umbreon is not obtainable in FireRed and LeafGreen due to lack of a time system. In order to be obtained and added to the Pokédex in these versions, an Eevee must be traded to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, evolved and then traded back or traded from Colosseum or Gale of Darkness.
- By National Pokédex order, Umbreon is the first Template:Type2 Pokémon, and the last Pokémon to not share a type with a Pokémon of a lower number.
- Umbreon is the only non-Template:Type2 Pokémon with the ability Synchronize.
- Umbreon is one of two Pokémon that can be obtained via more than one evolution method in the main series of games. The other one is Umbreon's counterpart, Espeon.
- Umbreon has the highest Special Defense of all Dark-types.
- In Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum, and Pokémon XD, Umbreon glows between its regular and shiny colorations.
- Umbreon is the only Eeveelution with a type immunity (without counting abilities).
- According to the Diamond and Pearl Pokédex, Umbreon, Glaceon, and Leafeon have identical footprints.
Origin
It is most likely based off of a Black Cat. It's appearance has a feline-shaped skull, slitted eyes, and a lithe sleek body. Its tail is thicker than most of its brethren, looking like a frightened cat's tail or perhaps even foxlike. In the anime and games like Pokepark Wii and Mystery Dungeon Umbreon displays actions that are also very catlike, such as licking itself, stretching and arching it's back, and even raising its fur to stand out (like a typical black cat silhouette). This would make sense to its type being Dark; black cats in most cultures are associated with deception and trickery. The rings on its body look like Egyptian lunar markings and jewelry that have been associated with cat sculpture as well. Some of its traits, such as the long ears, are similar to those of a hare; Numerous East Asian legends concern a Moon rabbit. In old European stories, the Moon gazing hare also has roots tied to folklore sources containing references to the Moon, hares, and night-time.
Name origin
Umbreon's name is derived from umbra, Latin for shadow and ghost. The -eon suffix, common to all Eevee evolutions, comes from Eevee's prototype English name and possibly refers to the ending suffix of evolution itself. Umbreon's name may also be derived from the color umber, seeing that it is a shade of brown very close to black. Its Japanese name, Blacky, could be a mix of 黒 (black) and 運が良い (lucky), tributing the black cat in Japan that is considered lucky. It may also simply refer to the color of its coat.
