Yanma (Japanese: ヤンヤンマ Yanyanma) is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon.
It evolves into Yanmega when leveled up while knowing AncientPower, which it learns at level 33 or by tutoring.
Biology
Physiology
Yanma is a large, red dragonfly Pokémon. It has a long thin abdomen and a comparatively short thorax. It has three pairs of two-toed legs and two pairs of wings with red bands on them. Its head is also mostly red, except for its very large, bright green eyes, which take up most of the space on its head. Its eyes can see all around its body alowing it to have an extremely high evasiveness, and the end of Yanma’s tail has two flat extensions from the sides and two spikes in the center.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
It can use its compound eyes to see completely around itself, making it easier to capture prey and avoid predators. It also can flap its wings very fast to generate shock waves which can break glass. Yanma's trademark attack seems to be SonicBoom, as seen in the anime and Pokédex.
Behavior
Yanma displays its adept abilities in flight by making sudden stops and turning midair to quickly chase down targeted prey. It can hover in one spot by flapping its wings at high speed, and flits about to guard its territory.
Habitat
In Pokémon Gold and Silver, Yanma was very rare except for the occasional swarm. It is often found in wooded and swampy areas.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
It is a hunter that uses its amazing eyesight and speed to pursue its insect prey.
In the anime
Major appearances
In The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, a rookie Trainer named Tyler was about to capture a Yanma that his Piplup had weakened, when Team Rocket showed up, and Jessie captured it instead. They sent it to Giovanni; however, Team Rocket already had obtained a large number of Yanma and so Giovanni returned it to them. When Jessie used Yanma in battle, it used AncientPower and evolved into a Yanmega. During this time, another weakened Yanma got away. A third Yanma appeared afterwards, and Tyler finally captured that one.
Other
Yanma first appeared in Wings n' Things. It was carelessly breaking glass in a town.
Minor appearances
Yanma also made a cameo in Pikachu's PikaBoo, and another as one of the Pokémon to appear in Latios and Latias' garden in Pokémon Heroes.
A Yanma appeared in All in a Day's Wurmple, under the ownership of Forrester Franklin.
A group of Yanma also appeared in The Rise of Darkrai.
Yanma also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.
Yanma appeared in Zoroark: Master of Illusions as a few of the many local Pokémon who lives in Crown City. Three of them took part in surrounding Zorua in the park along several other Pokémon to attack him, angry at Zorua for what Zoroark did to the city. Before a fight broke out, the Yanma, along with the other Pokémon, were calmed by Celebi.

Trivia
- In Gold and Silver, the spikes at the end of Yanma's tail are actually located under the tail.
- Yanma is the last Pokémon in Johto Pokédex order that has the same number that it has in the New Pokédex, due to its evolution and the evolutions of Aipom, Lickitung, Piloswine, and Tangela.
- Yanma and its evolution, Yanmega, along with Togetic, Togekiss, Giratina and Smeargle (by Sketch), are the only Pokémon that can learn all three variations of AncientPower.
Origin
Yanma is based on a dragonfly, possibly the red-veined darter. Because of its size and weight, it might have been inspired by extinct giant dragonflies in the Epiophlebia genus.
Name origin
Yanma's name is an abbreviation of its Japanese name, which is in turn 蜻蜓 yanma, large dragonfly, partially doubled.
