Zorua partially transformed into Ash

Zorua and its mother Zoroark were abducted from their home by businessman Grings Kodai. Aboard Kodai's airship, Zorua is taken from its mother in order to intimidate Zoroark into attacking Crown City disguised as the Legendary beasts. However, Zorua managed to escape the airship, transforming into a Skiploom midfall and angering a group of Vigoroth upon landing, who chased it to the edge of a cliff. Fortunately for Zorua, Ash and his friends arrived and saved it. After showing its ability to use telepathy to speak, Zorua stated that it was heading for Crown City to save its "Meema", and Ash and friends agreed to help Zorua find its mother.

Later, outside Crown City, Kodai broadcasted a television statement claiming that Zoroark had seized control of his Legendary Pokémon to attack the city. Revealing Zoroark to be its "Meema" and explaining that Kodai was the real villain, Zorua attracted the interest of Karl, a reporter investigating Kodai. With Karl's help, the group made it inside the old part of the city, which had been closed off by the police. Zorua ran off to find its mother, but was held back by Joe's Mightyena and lulled to sleep by Tammy's Tangrowth.

Zorua partially transformed into Brock

Zorua awakened in Joe's workshop after sensing Zoroark's roars of fury back within Kodai's airship, and once again ran off in a desperate attempt to find her. Shortly afterwards, it found itself surrounded by a group of scared and angry wild Pokémon. Having followed Zorua, Dawn's Piplup and Ash's Pikachu tried to convince the Pokémon to calm down, to no avail. Before a fight could break out, Celebi flew in and greeted everyone and turned all of the nearby flowers into Berries. The wild Pokémon happily ate the Berries and shared them with Pikachu and Piplup. Celebi grabbed a Pecha Berry and gave it to Zorua, who quickly became friends with Celebi and asked it to help find Zoroark, taking off as Celebi, Pikachu, and Piplup followed.

After taking a short rest up in a massive tree, Zorua and its new friends began to descend its branches when Kodai arrived on his hoverboard to capture Celebi. Zorua and friends fought back to protect Celebi, with Zorua transforming into Tangrowth and creating illusions of vines to hold back Kodai's Pokémon. However, Kodai used his illusion canceler bracelet to break the illusions and instructed his Shuppet to use Shadow Ball. Zorua took the hit and collapsed while calling out for its mother. Kodai grabbed Celebi and shook the Pokémon before Zorua jumped on his head, causing him to crash along with Celebi. Enraged, Kodai furiously threw Zorua to the ground.

Zorua partially transformed into Dawn

Kodai once again went for Celebi, but Pikachu and Piplup stopped him. In response, Kodai's henchman, Goone, called on two of his Scizor, who sent Pikachu and Piplup flying. However, they were saved by Ash and the others, who retreated with Zorua and friends to Joe's workshop. Zorua lamented that it could not protect Celebi, but the group resolved to take it to be healed by the Time Ripple inside the Pokémon Baccer World Cup stadium before Kodai could reach it first.

The group emerged from the sewers after using them as a shortcut, only to spot Kodai and Goone. Ash continued to the stadium with Zorua (disguised as Celebi) and Karl's Bronzor, while his friends dealt with Goone. Kodai pursued Ash and, while Pikachu and Mismagius battled, Ash sent Zorua to the Time Ripple, using Bronzor's psychic abilities to help Zorua "fly" like Celebi, luring away Kodai as he chased after Zorua, thinking that it was Celebi. In the stadium, Shuppet used Thunderbolt on Zorua, revealing its true form. Bronzor then used Psychic to throw aside Kodai's vehicle, but Kodai's Pokémon quickly knocked Bronzor to the ground. Zorua promptly leapt and bit Kodai's arm. Kodai then threw Zorua aside and grabbed it with the claw of his robotic arm.

At the stadium entrance, Ash let the real Celebi out of his backpack and started searching for the Time Ripple. They spot it, but as they ran toward it, Mismagius stopped them with Psychic. Kodai then started approaching the Time Ripple. However, Zoroark leaped down from above and charged towards Kodai, but stopped after he threatened to kill the captured Zorua. Kodai then shocked Zorua with his robotic arm and ordered Shuppet to finish off Zoroark as he approached the Time Ripple and started to absorb its power.

When the Time Ripple was revealed to be an illusion created by Zoroark, Kodai discovered that Zorua's bite had destroyed his illusion canceler. While Kodai was distracted by this, Zorua managed to recover and shakily make its way towards its mother. As Zorua and Zoroark approached each other, Kodai ordered Shuppet to use Shadow Ball on Zorua, but Zoroark leaped to take the attack instead. Zorua turned in horror as an enraged Kodai grabbed Zoroark and shocked her. However, Zoroark managed to break free with Dark Pulse, destroying the robotic arm and knocking Kodai and Shuppet back in the process. As Kodai was cornered, he attempted to go for the Time Ripple, when suddenly the three legendary beasts serving as Crown City's guardians appeared, prompting Kodai to make a run for it.

Zorua and Zoroark reunited at last

As Zoroark collapsed from her injuries, Zorua cried and plead for its mother to awaken, creating an illusion of a beautiful grassy field — their home. Celebi, after being healed by the true Time Ripple, used the Ripple's energy field to revive Zoroark, allowing a tearful reunion between mother and child. As Zoroark recovered, Zorua thanked everyone for saving its mother. Celebi smiled and then time travelled away in billows of light after making the area's greenery bloom. Zorua was saddened by Celebi's departure, but promised to be its friend forever.

Zorua, his new friends, and the other townsfolk surrounded Kodai as he regained consciousness, discovering his confession being broadcast on the news and Officer Jenny preparing to arrest him for his crimes. Later, Zoroark and Zorua boarded on a ship heading back to their home with Karl and Rowena. Before they departed, Zorua mischievously took on the form of Ash while its mother took Pikachu's form, before being turned back to its original form when Rowena grabbed its tail.

Later, Zoroark and Zorua nuzzled each other affectionately as the ship approached a mist-covered island.

Personality and characteristics

Zorua inside of Zoroark's fur

Zorua is proud and considers itself strong, despite being a small child. However, its headstrong nature gets it in trouble, as it may pick fights it is actually ill-prepared for. It is also very playful and mischievous, often using its illusion abilities to shape-shift into others for fun and snickering when it tricks people. Despite this, Zorua's got a good heart and will go to great lengths for its friends, not backing down no matter what. Zorua admires its mother's strength greatly, wishing to one day become just as strong as she is.

Like Zoroark, it is able to use illusions to change into different forms. However, since its powers aren't fully developed, Zorua still retains its tail when it transforms into a human, and will revert back to normal if the tail is touched. In the movie, Zorua is shown to have the ability to communicate with people through telepathy, but its mother is not seen communicating this way.
