Gorebyss (Japanese: サクラビス Sakurabyss) is a Water-type Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Gorebyss resembles a pink eel-like creature with a long thin mouth, and two shell-like structures on its chest which makes it resemble a mermaid. It also has an antenna-like fin on top of its head and two small eyelashes on each eye. Gorebyss' shape suggests that it was modeled after a Pipefish or Sniper eel.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Its body is extremely durable, so as to withstand the extreme hydrostatic pressures exercised to it at such a depth, which explains its high Defense stat.

It also uses its thin mouth to pick food from small openings. Its mouth can also serve as a strong spear-like weapon when it's hunting down prey.

Behavior

Despite its elegant and beautiful appearance Gorebyss can seem very cruel when it comes to hunting and battle, not hesitating to use its sharp, thin mouth to stab its prey into submission.

Habitat

Gorebyss lives deep under the southern seas and it can withstand the immense pressure that can be found at such extreme depths.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Gorebyss is an omnivore, and its basic diet consists of seaweed found in between rocks. It also uses its needle-like mouth to stab its prey, and then it proceeds to suck out its internal fluids.

In the anime

Gorebyss first appeared in AG095.

Triva

Although it seems like Gorebyss would be the female counterpart of Huntail, its actually capable of being male or female.

Origin

Gorebyss may have been based on a hagfish, but it also resembles a long-nosed chimaera

Name Origin

Gorebyss's name is a combination of gore, to stab, and byss, referring to filaments mollusks use to attach themselves to rocks. Its name could also possibly be a play on gorgeous. Another explanation could lie with the words abyss and the abyssal zone. Gorebyss's descriptions seem to confirm this view.

Its Japanese name is derived from the Japanese sakura, cherry blossom, possibly referring to its pink color, and the aforementioned byss.
