Zamazenta (Japanese: ザマゼンタ Zamazenta) is a Fighting-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, it has a second form activated by giving Zamazenta a Rusted Shield to hold. Its original form, Hero of Many Battles, will then become the Fighting/Steel-type Crowned Shield.

Zamazenta is the game mascot of Pokémon Shield, appearing on the boxart.

Biology

By absorbing the metal particles, Zamazenta can change to its other form in battle. In legends, it known as the Fighting Master's Shield due to ability to defect any attacks. Zamazenta is both feared and respected by all. By becoming a statue, it can rest for aeons; even while asleep, it can cast illusions including a projection of itself. It is believed to be the younger sibling (or perhaps the rival) of Zacian. When together with Zacian, it cancels out the power of Eternatus, even in the powerful Eternamax form. Zamazenta's regal and majestic movements enables it to overwhelm opponents who face off against it. Zamazenta fends off the attacks of foes by using the golden shield that covers its front. The shield's strength is so formidable that even the sharp claws of Dragon-type Pokémon cannot leave a single scratch upon it. No battlefield, no matter how terrible, can make Zamazenta flinch in its resolve. It charges at enemies head on with the impregnable shield-like armor that serves as a weapon. By bashing the enemies with its full might, it is said that the power can cause cracks in the land and that the resulting shockwaves can lay waist to hundreds of enemies. By using its signature move, it can go through towering mountains.

Zamazenta is the only known Pokémon capable of using Behemoth Bash.

This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation VIII.
Generation VIII Galar #399 Sword In times past, it worked together with a king of the people to save the Galar region. It absorbs metal that it then uses in battle. Shield This Pokémon slept for aeons while in the form of a statue. It was asleep for so long, people forgot that it ever existed.

Crowned Shield

This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation VIII.
Generation VIII Galar #399 Sword Its ability to deflect any attack led to it being known as the Fighting Master's Shield. It was feared and respected by all. Shield Now that it's equipped with its shield, it can shrug off impressive blows, including the attacks of Dynamax Pokémon.

Trivia

• Crowned Shield Zamazenta has the highest base Defense and Special Defense stats of all Fighting-type Pokémon.
• Crowned Shield Zamazenta is the heaviest Fighting-type Pokémon.

Origin

Zamazenta may be based on King Arthur's shield, known as Wynebgwrthucher, and on one of the two chimeras designed on the golden hilt of his sword Excalibur. Those two weapons were first named in Culhwch and Olwen, a Welsh Arthurian tale about how the king slew the chief of the giants. It may also be based on the Knights of the Round Table, characters under Arthur's order said to work with him to protect the British kingdom. Its relationship with Zacian may reference the relationship between King Arthur and his sister Morgan le Fay.

It may also be based on Saint George, England's patron saint, said to kill a venomous dragon, often depicted using Saint George's Cross on his shield, what may be the origin of the patterns on the mane of its Crowned Shield form. On top of that, Zamazenta may be based on the hero King Beowulf, from the epic poem Beowulf. His name means "war wolf" and he wields Hrunting, a sword made to kill giants, what may be the origin of its signature move, Behemoth Bash.
