Kirlia (Japanese: キルリア Kirlia) is a dual-type Psychic/Fairy Pokémon introduced in Generation III. Prior to Generation VI, it was a pure Psychic-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Ralts starting at level 20 and evolves into Gardevoir starting at level 30 or, if male, Gallade when exposed to a Dawn Stone.

Biology

Kirlia is a bipedal, maiden-like humanoid Pokémon that appears to be wearing a tutu. Most of its body is colored white, and there are three ruffles on each hip. Beneath the ruffles, it has skinny green legs with long, pointed feet. Its arms are also thin with two digits each. It has green hair that covers most of its face and reaches its shoulders on either side, resembling two ponytails. Large, red eyes are visible on either side of the hair that covers its face. On each side of its head is a flat, crimson horn that resembles a hairpin.

Kirlia's horns are used to amplify its psychokinetic power and distort the air around it. The distortion in the air causes scenery mirages and can cause a rip in dimensions. This ability also allows Kirlia to see into the future. It enjoys dancing on sunny mornings, and grows beautiful when exposed to a Trainer with positive emotions. Kirlia inhabits urban areas.

Major appearances

Kirlia debuted in Jirachi: Wish Maker, under the ownership of Butler. It was used for a magic act during the Millennium Festival, and later to fight an Absol.

In Lights, Camerupt, Action!, Elijah used a Kirlia in a movie where it played the damsel in distress in the movie, being taken by an Exploud and later rescued by Plusle and Minun.

In Do I Hear a Ralts?, a wild Kirlia and Gardevoir sent Team Rocket flying when they cornered Max and Snorunt while they were caring for a Ralts and taking it to the Pokémon Center. However, Kirlia and Gardevoir thought Max was also trying to steal Ralts. When Ralts blocked Kirlia and Gardevoir's Psychic, the two Pokémon calmed down and left. Later, Kirlia and Gardevoir sent James blasting off, as Ralts had already launched Jessie and Meowth away for posing as Gardevoir and Kirlia, respectively.

In Fear Factor Phony, a Kirlia was living at an abandoned mining colony. Jessie's Wobbuffet fell in love with the Emotion Pokémon.

In a flashback in Mutiny in the Bounty!, a Kirlia was one of J's bounties. In the present day, Melodi owned another Kirlia. It was used to help Ash and his friends find out where J and her minions will strike next, after they stole Meowth, Ash's Pikachu, and Melodi's Gardevoir.

In Double-Time Battle Training!, Zoey used a male Kirlia, along with her Leafeon, in a Double Battle against Dawn's Cyndaquil and Mamoswine. In A Grand Fight for Winning!, he was revealed to have evolved into a Gallade.

Trivia

Origin

Kirlia seems to be based a young, feminine ballet dancer and the concept of empathy. The white frills surrounding its body resemble a tutu, and its thin, pointed legs make it appear as if it is standing en pointe and wearing green tights. Its hair is styled into pigtails, with its horns positioned like barettes or scrunchies. The red horns also resemble two halves of a heart, which may relate to its ability to sense emotions.

Name origin

Kirlia may be derived from Kirlian photography (a special way of taking pictures that supposedly reveals psychic energy auras around subjects).
