Allister (Japanese: オニオン Onion) is the Gym Leader of Stow-on-Side's Gym, known officially as Stow-on-Side Stadium. He specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon. He gives the Ghost Badge to Trainers who defeat him. In Pokémon Sword, Bea takes his place as Stow-on-Side's Gym Leader instead.

Allister is the fourth Gym Leader Galar Trainers face in their Gym Challenge in Pokémon Shield. This mysterious Trainer became the Gym Leader of Stow-on-Side Gym at a very young age. He is known to be very shy and fearful around people which is why he wears a mask. The mask serves as a way of confronting his fears and insecurities. He never removes his mask in public. He also keeps about 100 masks with the same design needed in the event his mask falls off. He is rarely seen around in public, preferring to spend most this time alone in ruins and cemeteries.[4] According to Allister, he claims to have the ability to see deceased Ghost-type Pokémon after a supposed accident at the age of four.

League Cards

This is a transcript of the back of Allister's League Cards in Pokémon Shield.

Normal League Card
"He is a young, mysterious Trainer who has taken on the mantle of Gym Leader at a very young age. He has never been known to remove his mask in public. In fact, he has at least one hundred masks of the same design, just to keep spares handy should his mask fall off for some reason. He claims to have developed the ability to see deceased Ghost-type Pokémon after an accident he had when he was four years old, but the truth is still a mystery."
Rare League Card
"This is a photo that happened to capture Allister in his locker room. He can be seen clutching the mask that normally hides his face, no doubt confronting the fears and insecurities he feels within. Even though he has taken the role of Gym Leader at a very young age, it is clear that off the pitch he is still very much a normal boy. However, one mystery remains—nobody knows who took this photo. Some even claim it was the work of Ghost-type Pokémon."

Allister in the anime

Allister debuted in The Spectral Express!. While traveling through Wyndon Station, Allister accidentally bumped into Ash and dropped his train ticket. Hoping to return the dropped item, Ash and Goh followed Allister and found themselves boarding a ghost train. By the time the three reunited, Ash had been possessed by the lone spirit of a Spiritomb boarding the train. While Goh kept the main Spiritomb body busy, Allister helped remove the spirit from Ash's body. Ash's Gengar then returned the spirit back to Spiritomb, calming it down. Upon the train reaching Stow-on-Side, Allister disappeared.

Allister reappeared in The Winding Path to Greatness!, where Ash and Goh learned that he was one of Stow-on-Side's Gym Leaders, although his Gym was much smaller than the Stow-on-Side Stadium. Ash came to him to ask help in Gigantamaxing his Gengar, which he agreed to. However, when it turned out Gengar could only perform a standard Dynamax, Allister told Ash and Goh about Max Mushrooms and the Max Soup that can made from them and can make a Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing. Allister accompanied Ash and Goh to the forest where Max Mushrooms grow, warning them of the Ghost-type Pokémon lurking in the woods. Once they had collected a sufficient amount of Max Mushrooms, Allister started cooking them and stayed awake overnight to watch over the stew pot. During the night, Allister had a talk with Gengar, understanding its desire to become stronger and its happiness of being with Ash. The next day, Gengar ate the Max Soup and was able to Gigantamax, making Allister happy. When Ash and Goh left Stow-on-Side, Allister came to see them off, hoping they would get to meet again.

In Battling Turned Up to Eleven!, Allister watched Ash's battle against Marnie on his Rotom Phone.

In Radio Lulled the Mischievous Stars!, Allister was shown listening to Team Rocket's radio show alongside his Cursola.

In JN129, Allister watched Ash's battle against Leon on his Rotom Phone. When Gengar managed to defeat Leon's Inteleon, Allister was seen celebrating the victory.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

Allister debuted in Glittering!! The Tapestry in the Vault. Unlike the games, he and Bea alternate on who runs the Stow-on-Side Stadium as its Gym Leader. He was first seen facing Henry Sword in a Gym battle at Stow-on-Side Stadium, but he lost. Later, Allister, Casey, Marvin, and Professor Magnolia went to investigate a loud sound coming from the Stow-on-Side mural. There, they found Bede trying to destroy the mural in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain Wishing Stars. Bede ignored Allister's pleas to stop, claiming his actions were a mission from Rose himself. Before he could continue, Bede was captured by several League Staff members and approached by Rose, who disqualified him from the Gym Challenge as punishment for damaging a historic landmark.

In Shocking!! Reunion in the Forest, after learning Professor Magnolia found her Antique Form Sinistea and Polteageist at Glimwood Tangle, Allister went into the forest hoping to find some as well. Upon arriving, he and Casey found an injured Dreepy whose caretaker Drakloak was fighting Casey's missing Toxtricity, Tera. With quick thinking, Casey helped Tera win the battle, allowing her to retrieve her Pokémon. Allister then decided to catch the Dreepy and Drakloak for himself.

In PASS25, the Galar Gym Leaders gathered at Rose Tower to find out whether or not Rose intended on bringing harm to the region. Shortly after arriving, they were stopped by Oleana. While Oleana kept the Gym Leaders busy, Henry, Casey, Bede, Hop, and Marnie headed up an elevator to meet Rose, only to learn he wasn't in the building. Appearing on a video screen, Rose announced his intention to restart the Darkest Day and ensure the safety of Galar's future. Power Spot lights began appearing all over the region, causing Pokémon to start Dynamaxing at random. Allister traveled to the Hammerlocke Energy Plant with the others, but decided to head back to Stow-on-Side with Bea to help deal with the rampaging Dynamax Pokémon.

In PASS29, Macro Cosmos employees were dispatched to deal with the Dynamax Pokémon, allowing Allister's group to provide backup for the others against Eternatus. By the time they arrived, Allister's group found Eternatus had fled, leaving those who battled it unconscious and covered in poison. The injured were taken to a hospital to recover.
