Zubat (Japanese: ズバット Zubat) is a dual-type Poison/Flying Pokémon.
It evolves into Golbat starting at level 22, whom evolves into Crobat by happiness.
Biology
Physiology
Zubat is a small, blue bat-like Pokémon. It has two long, skinny tails. Zubat's face lacks any eyes and a nose. The insides of Zubat's ears and undersides of its wings are purple.
Gender differences
A female has smaller fangs.
Special abilities
Though blind, they get around well with echolocation. They can also confuse foes with their high-pitched squeals.
Zubat can also attack with its fangs with moves like Bite and Poison Fang. Zubat is also capable of energy-draining moves such as Leech Life and Giga Drain.
Zubat is one of the few Pokémon that can use Air Cutter. Even though Zubat is actually mammalian, it can use Brave Bird.
Behavior
Habitat
Since Zubat don't prefer sunlight, they can be found quite easily in caves, particularly in caverns with limestone, which enhances their ultrasonic radar.

- Oddly, Zubat can learn Mean Look though it has no eyes.
- Zubat is the last Pokémon in alphabetical order.
- Zubat's Gold sprite has a coloring error: the rear of the left wing should be dark blue and not light purple. This was corrected for the Crystal version of the sprite.
- To date, every villainous team in the main series of games have had at least one of their members use Zubat and/or one of its evolutionary family members.
- Zubat is one of the few Pokémon where it's Generation III back sprite is noticeably different from it's Generation II back sprite
Origin
Naturally, Zubat's design is inspired by bats.
Name origin
Zubat may be named after a Japanese superhero, Kaiketsu Zubat. It may also be a pun on a combination of the word bat and ずばっと zubatto, which is when an edged tool forcefully pierces something. Another possibility for the origin of the 'zu' element is after the bird deity Zu in Akkadian mythology.
In other languages
- German: Zubat
- French: Nosferapti - Nosferatu is another word for vampire. The "rapti" part probably comes from the root rapt which relates to predatory characteristics. The "pti" can also come from petit (little), to go with the alto (high) in Golbat's French name.
- Korean: 주뱃 Jubaet
- Chinese (Taiwan): 超音蝠 (Chao Yin Fu) - Chinese for "supersonic bat".
- Chinese (Hong Kong): 波音蝠 (Po Yin Fu) - Chinese for "soundwave bat".
