Gligar (Japanese: グライガー Gliger) is a dual-type Ground/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Gliscor by level-up, at night, with a Razor Fang.

Biology

Physiology

Gligar is a small, purple, bat-like Pokémon. It has blue wings like a flying squirrel. Gligar has scorpion claws and a tail with a stinger on the end. Gligar has long, pointed ears and triangle-shaped eyes. Gligar could be considered a cousin of Skorupi due to its and scorpion-like traits, however, it shares some bat-like traits as well, making it similar to Zubat.

Gender differences

A female Gligar has a smaller stinger.

Special abilities

Gligar knows a small handful of Poisonous attacks, such as Poison Sting and the rarely known Cross Poison. Gligar can also use a few Template:Type2 moves, like Fury Cutter and U-turn. While Gligar can learn Ground- and Template:Type2 moves typical to a Template:Type2 Pokémon, its abilities as a Template:Type2 are limited. Most notable is the fact that Gligar can't learn Fly.

Also, Gligar and Gliscor are the only two Pokémon that are both Template:Type2 and Template:Type2, which gives them a unique resistance to both Template:Type2 and Template:Type2 moves. This trait is only shared with Vibrava and Flygon due to the ability, Levitate.

As shown in Riding the Winds of Change!, Gligar, along with its evolved form Gliscor, can emit a sort of sound wave in order to detect obstacles and fly around them, similar to echolocation.

Behavior

Gligar tend to ambush prey as it passes by below. They may also be mischevious, as shown in Riding the Winds of Change!, when a group of them were causing trouble in a city they had become trapped in.

Mountain Pokémon

Gligar live in mountainous regions, making their nests along cliff sides. It also prefers hot arid enviroments, but doesn't mind forests either.

Ash's Gligar

Gligar debuted in The Superhero Secret. It was owned by a superhero named Gligarman (or at least the man who personified Gligarman), and later by his daughter.

Morrison's Gligar first appeared in Saved by the Beldum.

Gligar, along with its evolved form Gliscor, was featured in Riding the Winds of Change! It was captured by Ash, while the Gliscor was captured by Paul. Ash's Gligar later evolved in Fighting Fear With Fear!.

Trivia

• While Gligar was unable to learn Earthquake by TM until Generation III, a Gligar that did know Earthquake was a reward in Pokémon Stadium 2 for beating the rival in Round 2.
• Gligar and Gliscor are the only dual-typed Pokémon that have immunity to one of their own types without the help of an ability (Ground moves do nothing to Template:Type2s).
• Gligar's colors vary between games and the anime. It is a light blue-violet in its sprite artwork and most game artwork, blue-purple in Platinum, regular purple in the high-grade console games such as Pokémon Battle Revolution, and powder-pink in the anime.
• Gligar is heavier than its evolution, being 142.9 lbs while Gliscor is only 93.7 lbs.
• Before Skorupi and Gliscor were revealed, fans believed Gligar would evolve into Drapion.
  • Interestingly, Gligar did gain an evolution, and Drapion was revealed to be an evolved Pokémon.
• Gligar is one of nine non-Bug, Template:Type2 Pokémon that cannot learn Fly.
• Gligar is one of the few Pokémon who cannot learn STAB attacks naturally, only by TMs and egg moves.
• Gligar is compatible with the Generation III move tutor for Dream Eater, but is incompatible with the TM in Generation IV that teaches the same move.
• The only sprite that doesn't show Gligar with its tongue out is from Pokémon Emerald. However, this only happens in the second frame of the sprite.

Origin

It shares physical traits with bats, gargoyles, and scorpions. It may be based on the scorpionfly.

Name origin

Gligar's name is a combination of glide and gargoyle.
