Once again, a man is fixing his new invention in his Sea Cottage when he locks himself inside the machine by accident. The automatic process begins with him trapped in one side of the machine and a Rattata on the other.

On Route 24, Red is troubled by the many Poké Balls on his belt, finding carrying them to be cumbersome but unwilling to drop them off due to the effort he put in capturing the Pokémon. While picking up a dropped Poké Ball, he spots a Rattata pulling along a log with a piece of rope, and notices that something is off about it. Concluding it must be a new type of Pokémon, he carefully approaches it, when it begins to speak to itself, bemoaning the effort in lighting a fire.

Red is left shocked, drawing the Rattata's attention as it turns around, revealing itself to have the face of a human with Rattata-like whiskers, teeth, and ears. As Red stammers to himself in confusion, the Rattata is happy to see a human, starting to think that no one would bother wandering out there. The Rattata asks Red for help, and then introduces himself as Bill, a Pokémon expert, despite his appearance. A Fearow catches sight of Bill as he beings talking about his Sea Cottage, swooping down and carrying him away in its talons. He yells out for Red to help him, and he nervously begins chasing after the Fearow.

Acting quickly, Red sends out Saur, commanding out Razor Leaf, which Bill chastises him for. He quickly tells him that to stop a flying Pokémon, he needs to prevent it from using its wings. In response, Red has Pika and Poli use Thunder Wave and Ice Beam, accidentally striking Bill instead of the Fearow. Bill tries to get Red to wait to attack again until Fearow stops flying and lands, but instead he commands Pika to attack from above, striking Fearow with an electric attack, causing it to let go of Bill and plummet down to the ground.

Red taunts the Fearow, which is able to recover despite the damage and goes into an offensive stance. In a small cave overlooking the impending battle, Bill recovers from the hard landing. He calls out to Red to to watch out for Drill Peck, recognizing the stance Fearow is taking. Spiraling like a tornado, it strikes Poli in the middle of the chest, causing Bill to look away in horror. As he peeks back, Poli dissolves, revealing itself to have merely been a Double Team clone, giving Poli the opportunity to freeze the Fearow completely solid. Red thanks Bill for the heads up, saying it's always good to know which move is coming next.

Back at the Sea Cottage, Bill is transformed back into a human with Red's help. Bill explains that his invention is meant to transport Pokémon anywhere, anytime. They formally introduce themselves to each other, with Red mentioning his goal to become the greatest Pokémon Trainer ever. Bill is happy to see that Red has something he's working towards, and offers to help Red with his storage problem. He pulls a Poké Ball off Red's belt, explaining he'll be able to send him any of his Pokémon instantly, wherever he happens to be. Realizing the Poké Ball he's holding contains the Fearow from earlier, he stumbles backwards onto the ground in fear, as Red laughs.
