Oshawott (Japanese: ミジュマル Mijumaru) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Dewott starting at level 17, which evolves into Samurott starting at level 36.

Along with Snivy and Tepig, Oshawott is one of the starter Pokémon of the Unova region, able to be chosen at the beginning of Pokémon Black and White.

Biology

Physiology

Oshawott is a bipedal sea otter-like Pokémon, primarily light blue, dark blue, and white in coloration. Oshawott has a rounded, spherical white head, with small, triangular dark-blue ears to the sides. Oshawott's eyes are large, dark, and ovoid in shape; its dark-orange nose is shaped like an oval on its side. Oshawott also possesses speckles to the sides of its face, most likely meant to be a stylistic implication of short whiskers in the common manner of cartoon canines, and light blue bubble-esque features composing a "collar" around its neck. Oshawott's torso is light blue, and decorated with a pale yellow seashell feature in the center. Made out of keratin, this appendage, called a "scalchop", can be removed and used in various ways; mainly, as a weapon. Its small, digit-less and somewhat rounded arms are white in coloration, with its feet—having, unlike its forearms, discernible digits—colored dark blue. Oshawott also possesses a slightly plank-shaped dark blue tail and a pair of fangs unseen until it opens its mouth.

Special abilities

It can fight skillfully by detaching the scalchop on its belly. The scalchop can be used for a variety of different things, such as a acting like a sword, shield, and boomerang.

Behavior

If Oshawott is attacked, it will fight back using its scalchop without any hesitation. When eating, Oshawott uses its forepaws to move food to its mouth. (rather than going down on all fours to eat it)

Habitat

Oshawott mainly live in water but may come to land.

Ash's Oshawott first appears in In The Shadow of Zekrom!, under the ownership of Professor Juniper. He begins to admire Ash and decides to leave the lab and follow him wherever he goes. He then saves Ash and Iris from Team Rocket in Enter Iris and Axew! and reappears again in A Sandile Gusher of Change! where he officially joins Ash's party.

Minor appearances

In BW019 multiple Trainers' Oshawott were seen at a Poké Mart. Later, a flashback of Cabernet's Dewott as an Oshawott was shown after it had been beaten by Cilan's Pansage.

Oshawott, along with Tepig and Snivy appear when Black accidentally drops his box containing the Pokémon. When Poka and Snivy begin fighting, Oshawott attempts to break them up, only to get hurt in the process. After getting annoyed, it attacks them and sends Poka running off.

Oshawott is Bianca's starter Pokémon in the Pokémon Master Black & White manga series.

Trivia

The three silhouettes on Pokémon Sunday

• Oshawott and its fellow Black and White starters were first revealed as silhouettes on the May 9, 2010 episode of Pokémon Sunday. They were later revealed in full in the June 2010 issue of CoroCoro.
• Oshawott is the only Water-type starter Pokémon to be based on a mammal.
• Oshawott is the only Water-type starter Pokémon to not have an "i" in its name.
• Oshawott is the only starter Pokémon whose name begins with a vowel, discounting Eevee.
• Oshawott and its evolutions are the only Water-type starter Pokémon that are not in any of the Water egg groups, being exclusive to the Ground Egg Group.
• Oshawott has the lowest base stat total of all Water-type starter Pokémon.
• Ken Sugimori said that Oshawott and its evolutions were the hardest for the team to design during production, as conceptualizing its evolutions were difficult. They eventually settled on a samurai theme and making its final form a sea lion after a trip to an aquarium.^{[citation needed]}

Origin

Oshawott is based on a sea otter and samurai. The shell on its stomach seem similar to Japanese war fans.

Name origin

Oshawott possibly derives from "ocean", "shell", "water" and "otter"; it may be a corruption of "ocean water". Its possible origin from the South American Marine Otter could correlate with the sound of its name being similar to "Ocelot" (a small wild cat native to the South and Central Americas) as the marine otter's colloquial nickname is "Gato Marino" ("Marine Cat"). The "osha" part could be a corruption of "O-shaped", given that its Japanese name contains "maru", meaning round. It might make reference to the Canadian cities of Oshawa and Ottawa, as Canada contains many protected areas in which sea otters reside. It could also make reference to George Ohsawa, a famed dietitian born into a poor samurai family during the Meiji Restoration of Japan. Its Japanese name may be derived from 水 mizu meaning water, or 未熟 mijuku meaning naive or immature, and 丸 maru meaning round. "-maru" is also a common suffix in male Japanese names. The syllable "mi" in its name, meaning "three" or "third", may imply a lineage within the evolutionary line with Mijumaru being third in line.

Scalchop, the official name for the shell on an Oshawott's belly, seems to be derived from "scallop" and "chop". It's Japanese name, Hotachi, is a portmanteau of 帆立 hotate, meaning scallop, and 太刀 tachi, meaning sword.
