Escavalier (Japanese: シュバルゴ Chevargo) is a dual-type Bug/Steel Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Karrablast when traded for a Shelmet.

Biology

Physiology

Escavalier’s head sports a feature quite resembling the red horsehair crest of a knight’s helmet, with a visor underneath it. The shoulders of Escavalier have large, round metal ridges, from which its thin black arms extend. The arms are tipped with red-striped jousting-lance like protrusions. Escavalier’s face and torso are bare of armor, but its lower body is concealed within a swirled gray shell with a red spike on the underside, which is presumably the shell of a Shelmet.

Trivia

  • Escavalier has the highest Attack of all Bug-type Pokémon, and it is tied with Metagross and Excadrill for highest Attack of all Steel-type Pokémon.
  • Although Escavalier's Pokédex entry states that it flies around at high speed, its base speed is among the lowest of all known Pokemon, at just 20.
    • It is also incapable of learning Fly, nor can it have the ability Levitate, despite the fact that its battle animations showing it floating.

Origin

Both Karrablast and Escavalier seem to be based on Scaphinotus angusticollis, the snail-killer carabid, a beetle that preys on snails by forcing their way inside the shell.

Escavalier's design is based on a jousting knight. It is also slightly based on a cuirass.

Name origin

Escavalier's name (both English and Japanese) derive from シュバリエ chevalier and エスカルゴ escargot, knight and snail in French respectively. It may also be derived from the French term cavalier, which means "mounted soldier". It may also be related to the name Excalibur, the name given to King Arthur's sword.
