April 1, 2016 was an April Fools' Day that fell on a Friday. In the Pokémon fandom, some websites pulled hoaxes on gullible fans.

Fansites
Bulbagarden
- The Bulbagarden Forums stated that Chespin would be Pikachu's successor as the mascot for the Pokémon franchise.[1]
Other fansites
- On Reddit, subreddits /r/pokemon and /r/CFB switched themes for the day turning /r/Pokémon into a sub on College Football and /r/CFB into a Pokémon themed sub.
- On Pokémon Showdown, a Digimon theme was adopted for the battle simulator. Similar to previous years, all sprites and models were replaced with various fan-drawn sprites, with the exception of Cosplay Pikachu, Primal Reversions and some Mega Evolutions introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Note that Mega Latias and Mega Latios already had their own fan-drawn sprites.
