Dratini (Japanese: ミニリュウ Miniryu) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves into Dragonair starting at level 30, who evolves into Dragonite starting at level 55.
Biology
Physiology
Dratini are serpentine Pokémon that inhabit lakes and rivers. They possess fins on the sides of their heads as well as a large, round silver nose on their face. They also have purple-colored eyes and a small circular feature on their head. Dratini are constantly growing, and can become quite long. As they grow, they shed their delicate deep blue skin. Dratini also seem to have a much more stocky body than their evolved form.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
As a Dragon-type Pokémon, Dratini can use Dragon-type moves such as Dragon Rage and Twister.
Behavior
Dratini are timid, elusive, and extremely shy Pokémon, causing them to be rarely seen, making people to believe it is a myth among certain communities in Kanto.
Habitat
Dratini are said to be nonexistent or one-of-a-kind Pokémon, as they are so rare. However, they are found in several places, including the Kanto Safari Zone, Dragon's Den, and Mt. Coronet.

Dratini was seen in a flashback of Lance's as a Pokémon harmed by human industrialization. This motivated Lance to formulate his plot to destroy humanity many years later.

Trivia
- Dratini's prototype name was "Dragoon," meaning a European military unit that is transported by horseback but fights on foot, but was probably used as a play on the word "dragon," or as a combination of "dragon" and "lagoon."
- Dratini is the first Template:Type2 Pokémon by National Pokédex order.
- Dratini's evolutionary family is the only Dragon-type family in Generation I.
- Dratini and its evolutions share the same species name with Horsea and its evolutions, and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.
- Along with Larvitar, Remoraid, Trapinch, and Giaru, Dratini is one of the few basic-stage Pokémon to learn Hyper Beam.
Origin
It appears to be based upon sea serpents or ryu, traditional Japanese dragons or Chinese dragons who bring good luck. Its constant growth is similar to that of Jörmungandr, a serpent in Norse mythology. It may also be based on the imugi.
Name origin
Dratini's name appears to be a combination of dragon and -tini, a variation on the Italian suffix -ini, which is applied to a word to imply endearment or smallness. Despite this, it is fairly large for a Pokémon, being nearly six feet (1.8 meters) in length. Its Japanese name, a combination of miniature and 竜 ryū, dragon, has a similar meaning.
In other languages
- German: Dratini - Same as English
- French: Minidraco - Comes from miniature and draco (Latin for "dragon").
- Korean: 미뇽 Minyong - from miniature and yong (dragon).
- Chinese (Taiwan): 迷你龍 Mí Nǐ Lóng - "Mini dragon".
