Suicune (Japanese: スイクン Suicune) is a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Raikou and Entei, it is one of the legendary beasts created by Ho-Oh after the burning of the Brass Tower. Of the three legendary beasts, Suicune is said to represent the rains that quenched the flames of the burning Brass Tower.

Suicune is pursued in the anime, manga, Pokémon Crystal, and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver by Eusine.

Suicune is the version mascot of Pokémon Crystal, appearing on the boxart.

Template:Mo was a major character in the movie Celebi: Voice of the Forest.

Biology

Physiology

Suicune is an elegant and slim blue Pokemon with white diamond-shaped spots and a white underside. Suicune has a purple, cape-like mane that resembles a northern aurora (Aurora Borealis) or a flowing river and two white streamer-like tails. Strangely, these tails are never seen flowing behind Suicune, a possible effect from the Northern wind blowing from behind it. It has a hexagonal, aquamarine-colored crest on its forehead, red irises, a protrusion on the underside of its chin and small paws. Its paws have a small white oval on their underside.

Gender differences

Suicune is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Suicune has the power to purify dirty water and can walk across water. Northern winds always seem to blow wherever it shows up. Because Suicune is the embodiment of the northern winds, it is able to learn and use almost every attack with relation to the wind (such as Gust, Icy Wind, Blizzard, and even Tailwind, making it the only non-Template:Type2 Pokémon to do so). Suicune, like the other Legendary Beasts, is also extremely fast; interestingly enough, however, it does not learn ExtremeSpeed naturally. It also sports limited mental powers.

As noted in Pokémon Crystal, Suicune is said to be the closest of the Legendary Beasts to Ho-Oh. It is also said to have a link to the Unown.

Behavior

  • In the anime, Suicune has shown a heroic, serious and calm nature to dangerous situations and has appeared just in time to save the main character or character of the day, as shown in Drifloon on the Wind! when it races to save Ash and Paige.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, it was thought to be searching for a trainer strong enough to master him, but was however looking for allies in the battle against the Masked Man to save its creator, Ho-Oh.
  • It's sometimes seen roaring off sides of cliffs.

Habitat

Since Suicune is a member of the Legendary Beast Trio, Suicune races around the land. Some say it searches for a pure reservoir. Many speculate that Suicune and the rest of the Legendary Beasts are indeed not unique species because in Celebi: Voice of the Forest, Professor Oak speaks as if the Suicune in question was a specific Pokémon of that species.

In the anime

Major appearances

Suicune (anime)

Its first appearance is in the episode Don't Touch That 'dile when Ash, Misty, and Brock spot Suicune in the middle of a lake near New Bark Town. When it spots the group, it runs off.

Its first significant appearance is in the episode For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll, where it appeared in Ecruteak City after one of the Crystal Bells from the Bell Tower was destroyed.

Suicune (movie 4)

The first lengthy appearance of Suicune is in Celebi: Voice of the Forest. In the course of the movie, it demonstrated its ability to purify water, as well as doing battle with Dark Celebi.

Other

Suicune in Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark

Suicune also appears in Sinnoh in Drifloon on the Wind!. It was a friend to two young Joys named Marnie and Paige. Suicune saved Ash and Paige's lives.

A shiny Suicune appeared alongside Celebi and the other members of its trio in the thirteenth Pokémon movie, Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Minor appearances

Suicune also has a small cameo at the opening of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

Pokédex entries

DP028 Suicune Ash's Pokédex Suicune, the Aurora Pokémon. It travels the world and and purifies water wherever it goes, sailing on the North Wind.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

Suicune in Pokémon Adventures

Suicune was awakened by Yellow along with its two counterparts, and the three raced around Kanto and Johto looking for Trainers to help them defeat the Masked Man to free Ho-Oh. Suicune, in particular, personally challenges nearly every single Gym Leader in the two regions. During its travels, it encounters both Eusine and Crystal, both of which become obsessed with capturing it. Eusine acquires the Crystal Bell from the Rocket trio he defeats, but he and Crystal is still unable to capture Suicune. Crystal has her confidence shattered by this (and by the guilt of interrupting Suicune's attempt to contact its old master) and has to retreat back to her old training grounds to regain her confidence, which she does by reacquiring her catching skills capturing a wild Larvitar. Suicune later chooses Misty as its partner and fights alongside her, but then pairs up with Crystal anyway after Misty becomes injured (much to the dismay of Eusine).

Suicune can communicate with Raikou and Entei telepathically.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl

When released from a Poké Ball, Suicune unleashes a blast of Icy Wind that causes high levels of damage. Suicune returns in Brawl but with a different attack, Aurora Beam.

Game data

NPC appearances

Pokémon Crystal: It is possible to see Suicune multiple times on the overworld before the actual battle in Bell Tower. In these occasions, it will always hop away on being spotted.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver: As in Crystal, Suicune will roam Johto and Kanto before finally battling the player. After being first seen in the Burned Tower, it runs to Cianwood City, Mt. Mortar, Vermilion Harbor, and Route 14 before giving itself up at the end of Route 25 after defeating Misty. If it is not caught, Suicune can be found in the Burned Tower after defeating the Elite Four again.

Trivia

Origin

Suicune is based on the Chinese and Japanese Qilin, a form of unicorn that has traits of deer, giraffes, and other beasts. It is able to walk on water and is known to be a powerful and peaceful creature. The horn on Suicune's head matches the description of the beast's antler's and the long dragonish muzzle. The spots of Suicune are also significant, seeming to combine the spots of a leopard leopard, taking homage from Fujin, the Shinto god of The North Wind, who wears leopard skin; and the tessellated spots of a giraffe. The way Suicune runs, roars, and behaves in the anime also further suggests it's leopard origin; some species of leopard are found in Asia and are featured in myths that show it is an important and widely respected sacred animal like the Qilin. Being a Pokémon that represents the wind and rain, Suicune may also be based on Anitong Tabo, who according to the Philippine mythology, was the goddess of winds and rains.

Name origin

Suicune's name is probably based off its Japanese name, Suikun. Suikun is likely a combination of 水 sui, water, and 君 kun, monarch. However, the game title it is the mascot of suggests that it may be derived from 水晶 suishō, crystal.
