Ash finally faces Fantina, the Gym Leader of Hearthome City. Fantina dances in and gets ready to battle. At the same time, Jessie and Yanmega are getting ready for the Majolica Town Contest. The episode switches back to Ash as the battle is about to begin. Dawn, Brock and Barry sit in the stands to cheer Ash on. Fantina sends out her Gengar to start off the battle. Ash sends out Buizel, and the battle begins. Ash commands Buizel to use Water Gun but it misses. Fantina then orders Gengar to use Shadow Punch which hits. Then Gengar fires a Confuse Ray but it is blocked by using Water Gun while spinning creating counter shield. Buizel then uses Water Pulse which knocks out Gengar.
Back at the Majolica Contest, Jessie sends out Yanmega who begins to perform its appeal, which the spectators love. Back at the gym, Fantina sends out Mismagius while Ash sends out Chimchar. Ash flashes back to Zoey's battle against it. Ash tells Chimchar to use Flame Wheel which hits Mismagius. Ash then uses counter shield to block Magical Leaf. Ash then has Chimchar use Flame Wheel which Fantina attempts to block with Psywave. Chimchar hits Mismagius and knocks it out.
Back at the contest, Jessie is presented her second ribbon. James and Meowth cries tears of joy for Jessie.
The gym battle is reaching its end as Fantina sends out Drifblim and Ash sends out Pikachu. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt on Drifblim. It temporarily paralyzes Drifblim, but by using Psychic Drifblim throws the paralysis off. Using Ash's strategy against him. Drifblim creates a shield of Will-O-Wisp and Psychic. Pikachu is unable to break through and Drifblim defeats Pikachu by using Hypnosis and Ominous Wind. Buizel is brought out to defeat Drifblim, but despite getting through the shield, it too suffers from Hypnosis and is defeated.
Chimchar is brought out and it initially is also unable to break the shield. But Ash gets clever and uses Flamethrower and Will-O-Wisp against Drifblim, scoring a hit. Then Chimchar used Dig, emerges, and grabs Drifblim. Chimchar throws Drifblim to the ground and then attacks with Flamethrower before Hypnosis can be used. Drifblim is defeated and Ash wins. Fantina awards him the Relic Badge.
Later that night, Barry announces he is going to go train on Iron Island. When Ash learns that's near Canalave City, Ash says he'll be challenging the Gym there and asks Barry to travel with them. Barry agrees and he and Ash begin their true rivalry.
