(Japanese: フタチマル Futachimaru) is Template:Type2 Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Oshawott starting at level 17, and evolves into Daikenki starting at level 36.

Biology

Physiology

Futachimaru is a bipedal, otter-like Pokémon that is primarily light blue in coloration. It has small black ears, a pointed crest at the back of its head, a red nose shaped like a tilted oval, and long white whiskers forming tilted "V" shapes. Its forelimbs sport three fingers on each black-colored paw. Around its waist is a large, blue, fringed adornment, with seashells—like those Futachimaru possessed as an Oshawott—on the thighs. Its feet are tipped in black and its somewhat plank-shaped tail is also black-colored.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Futachimaru can detach the two shells from its hips and use them as bladed weapons. Swordshell-wielding attacks differ between Futachimaru.

Behavior

Futachimaru strictly train themselves to be able to master its shell swordsmanship. It never fails when keeping its swordshell in shape.

Habitat

Futachimaru primarily live in water, but are actually amphibious, like Oshawott and Daikenki.

Major appearances

Futachimaru made its anime debut in BW004, under the ownership of a Trainer and was battling a Janovy. Futachimaru's Trainer later challenged Ash and his Pikachu to a battle, where it demonstrated surprising agility.

It is expected to appear in BW019.

Minor appearances

Two Trainers' Futachimaru made a brief appearance in BW010 on a computer screen in the Current Town Battle Club.

Trivia

Origin

Futachimaru is based on a sea otter and samurai[1]. Its trait of fighting with its two shells may be based on Tessenjutsu, a type of martial arts involving the Japanese war fan or possibly Hira shuriken.

Name origin

Futachimaru's name seems to come from 二つ futatsu meaning two, 太刀 tachi meaning long sword, and 丸 maru, a common ending in a boy's name, especially in the time of samurai. The 二 futa in Futachimaru's name may imply a lineage within the evolutionary line, with Futachimaru being second in line.
