Crawdaunt (Japanese: シザリガー Shizariger) is a dual-type Water/Dark Pokémon.

It evolves from Corphish starting at level 30.

Biology

Physiology

Crawdaunt are large, mostly red crustacean Pokémon. They have three pairs of limbs in total: two pincers with spikes protruding from the edges and tan-colored lower sides of the claws, one pair of legs that resembles Corphish's with small spikes, and a two-clawed back pair that looks almost elephantine. They possess two blue stripes on their chin that are sometimes mistaken for a pair of lips. Lower on their tan-colored underside is a pattern of angular red shapes, separating the upper portion of their underside from the lower portion. On the top of their head is a yellow star-shaped object, the purpose of which is currently not known. It may just be there for show. Crawdaunt has circular eyes with small pupils in dark sockets, and a pocketing in its shell below its eye resembling ‘bags’. On the lower part of its lobster-like tail is a triangular patch of yellow.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Crawdaunt is a very powerful, violent Pokémon. Its strong pincers allow it to use moves such as ViceGrip and even Guillotine. Crawdaunt often wildly flails its pincers, and also may use them to pick up and toss other Pokémon out of its pond. Due to its proficiency with its sharp pincers, Crawdaunt may possess the ability Hyper Cutter. Its tough outer armor also enables it to have a sturdy defense, which can be seen with its ability Shell Armor. As a Water-type, Crawdaunt can also use Water-type moves such as Bubble and BubbleBeam.

Behavior

Crawdaunt are extremely aggressive Pokémon that will bully others in order to drive them away from their homes, exhibiting behavior similar to Whiscash. Its nature also means that Crawdaunt is prone to challenge other living things to battle, and it loves to do so. Crawdaunt molt their shells regularly, and immediately after their shells are soft and tender. Until the shells harden, Crawdaunt hide in their streambed burrows to avoid being attacked from its foes.

Veteran Crawdaunt, which have prevailed in hundreds of battles, have giant pincers that are marked with countless scars. Crawdaunt have been said to be hard to raise.

Habitat

Crawdaunt live in ponds and streams.

Trivia

  • Crawdaunt's original name was Lobstar, referring to the star on its head and the word lobster.
  • To date, Crawdaunt is the only Pokémon with a catch rate of 155.
  • In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, some of the Crawdaunt caught in Celestic Town may be underleveled - Corphish does not evolve until level 30, but it is possible to catch a level 20 one here.
  • Crawdaunt is the only dual-typed Pokémon that has Adaptability.

Origin

Crawdaunt's name and appearance suggest that it is based on a red swamp crayfish. However, its size and dark type would suggest it based on a larger, more powerful creature, such as the lobster.

Name origin

Crawdaunt's name is based on crawdad or crawfish, alternate names for a crayfish. This is in combination with daunt, to cause to lose courage, or perhaps taunt (which happens to be a move it can learn).

Shizariger is based on シザー shizā, scissors, and ザリガニ zarigani, crayfish.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Krebutack From Krebs and attack.
French Colhomard From homard.
Korean 가재장군 Gajaejanggun From 가재 gajae and 장군 janggun.
Chinese (Taiwan) 鐵螯龍蝦 Tiě Áo Lóng Xiā "Iron-clawed lobster". 龍蝦 can also be derived from 小龍蝦 Xiǎolóngxiā. Alternatively, 螯蝦 also means crayfish.
