Poochyena (Japanese: ポチエナ Pochiena) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Mightyena starting at level 18.

Biology

Physiology

Poochyena's body is gray, with black coloration on its face, feet, ear insides and underbelly. The coloration on its underbelly, however, is not entirely continuous, with the coloration on the throat being separate from the coloration on the lower belly. Poochyena's eyes have yellow scleras and red irises and its nose is also red. Two of Poochyena's fangs poke out of its lower jaw, and the fur on its lower back near its tail is rumpled and shaggy. On the bottom of its feet, Poochyena's paw pads have been seen to be gray. Poochyena's main coloration is swapped when it evolves.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Poochyena has a very keen sense of smell, allowing it to find and chase its prey with ease.

Behavior

At first sight, Poochyena bites at anything that moves. Noted for its tenacious nature, it chases after prey until the victim becomes exhausted. However, Poochyena may turn tail if the prey strikes back. Poochyena often tries to intimidate its foes by making the hair on its tail bristle out.

Habitat

This Pokémon lives in grasslands and forests, sometimes they can be found at plains in search for prey.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Poochyena is based on a wolf or a hyena, therefore, it is likely that Poochyena would be considered a carnivore. However, it has been seen eating berries and other fruits, so this could indicate that it is also an omnivore.

In the anime

Poochyena in the anime

Major appearances

When Professor Birch got separated from Ash Ketchum in Get the Show on the Road, he was attacked by a pack of these Bite Pokémon (similar to what happens in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire).

In A Bite to Remember, Max befriended a Poochyena and helped it to evolve.

Minor appearances

One of the Gym Badge thieves from The Blue Badge of Courage had a Poochyena.

Poochyena appeared in both Disaster of Disguise, and Disguise Da Limit. It first appeared under the ownership of a young girl. Later, during Mrs. Grimm's flashback, it was revealed that she owned one as a child.

A Poochyena appeared in All Things Bright and Beautifly.

A Poochyena appeared in Now That’s Flower Power! as a Pokémon in the Contest.

A wild Poochyena appeared in A Six Pack Attack! to assist Professor Birch in finding Professor Oak, May, and Max.

A Poochyena also appeared in Hi Ho Silver Wind!

A Poochyena appeared in Win, Lose, or Drew! as a Pokémon in the Contest.

Pokédex entries

Ruby's Mightyena, Nana, as a Poochyena

Pokémon Adventures

A Poochyena named Nana is first seen in Ruby's possession, one of the three Pokémon given to him from his father, Norman, when he was very young. Even 5 years before the events of the RS series, Nana was shown to be a formidable battler, injuring a wild Salamence teaming up with Coco and Ruru, Ruby's Ralts. While it still hadn't evolved, Ruby saw few wild Mightyena that attacked Birch and envied how splendid their fur looked. A few chapters down the line, Ruby would obtain his own Mightyena on Dewford Town when he met up with Steven, and Nana evolved together with Coco, who touched the champion's Moon Stone. This new evolved form saw a furthering of Nana's abilities, allowing it to perfect its Hyper Beam attack.

Trivia

  • Poochyena is the only Pokémon that can be found normally on the first accessible route of a main region that is not a Normal, Flying or Bug-type Pokémon.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

It shares some similarities with both wolves and hyenas. However, its small size, typically tenacious nature, and affinity for biting calls to mind Tasmanian devils.

Name origin

Poochyena's name, an alternate version of its Japanese name, is likely a combination of Pochi, a popular name for dogs in Japan, and hyena. The English spelling of the name may be influenced by the word pooch, a slang word for dog.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Fiffyen
French Medhyena From medium and hyena.
Korean 포챠나 Pochyana Similar to the word pooch, which is pronounced the same in Korean as it is in English.
Chinese 土狼犬 Tǔ Láng Quǎn Combination of 土狼 and . May also mean "Earth wolf dog".
