Mightyena (Japanese: グラエナ Guraena) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Poochyena starting at level 18.

Biology

Physiology

Mightyena is based on a hyena. Its body is a mixture of black and gray colored fur, with black coloration on its lower legs, clawed feet, and tail. Mightyena has dark, triangular streak patterns below its eyes, which have yellow scleras and red irises. Mightyena has rhombus-shaped ears with dark insides, gray paw pads, and noses that are red in coloration. It has eyebrow-like extensions on its head from the black, shaggy "mantle" of fur on its back.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Mightyena defeat foes with perfectly coordinated teamwork.

Behavior

Mightyena tends to have a very loyal nature. In the wild, it is a pack animal that follows an experienced leader. As a result, if it recognizes that its Trainer is very experienced, it will obey orders without any problem. As depicted in Zoroark Master of Illusions, Mightyena is prone to licking the faces of the people it is fond of, like a dog. Mightyena gives obvious signals when it is preparing to attack, starting to growl deeply and then flattening its body. It chases down prey in a pack. Mightyena seems prone to howling atop cliffs before leaping down to apprehend intruders.

Pokémon Adventures

Ruby's Poochyena, Nana, evolved into Mightyena in Dewford Town as the boy met up with Steven. With its increased strength and capacity for better handling advanced techniques such as Hyper Beam, it proved to become a force to be reckoned with, able to defend the boy against his powerful father Norman, and outdo Sapphire's Rono when it was attacked by surprise.

Before this, several wild Mightyena were seen being the Pokémon that attacked Professor Birch. The shiny gleam on their fur had the Contest-obsessed boy jealous.

Trivia

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

It shares some similarities with both canines and hyenas. Although, the design may have been influenced by domestic breeds like the German Shepherd Dog, a breed with personalities that are heavily influenced by their owners. German shepherds also commonly come in black and gray colorations. Its appearance may also be based on a brown hyena. Mightyena's appearance as well as the fact that it is a pack animal is reminiscent of a spotted hyena.

Name origin

Mightyena's name may be a portmanteau of might or mighty and hyena.

Its Japanese name may be a combination of growl and hyena.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Magnayen
French Grahyena From grand and hyena.
Korean 그라에나 Graena
Chinese(Taiwan) 大狼犬 Dà Láng Quǎn Literally "Big wolf dog".
