Route 42 is a northern Johto route that passes by the entrances to Mt. Mortar.

Route description

Upon leaving from either the western or eastern terminus, a trainer must have a Pokémon with Surf to continue, as the route is divided twice over by small lakes. On the small landmass between the two, there is a tree that is able to be Cut, leading to a trio of Apricorn trees, much like those on Route 37.

Each of the landmasses on the route also features an entrance to a different part of Mt. Mortar.

In Pokémon Crystal, Suicune appears on the overworld near the Apricorn trees, but flees if the player gets close.

Trivia

File:Crystal Japanese Suicune Route42 ObjectEvent.png

"Object event."
  • In Pokémon Crystal, if the player cheats to bypass the Cut tree in the area with the Apricorn trees on the small landmass between the two lakes where Suicune is initially found (and as long as the player does not walk towards the spot immediately below the Cut tree), he/she will be able to interact with Suicune. However, the game will simply pop-up the "Object event." (Japanese: オブジェイベント Objet event.) error code as Suicune does not have a talk event defined.
