Deino (Japanese: モノズ Monozu) is a dual-type Dark/Dragon Pokémon.

It evolves into Zweilous starting at level 50, which evolves into Hydreigon starting at level 64.

Biology

Physiology

Deino is a small blue skinned quadrupedal Pokémon with black fur covering its head and neck which conceals everything but its mouth from view. The fur around its neck also has six purple spots encircling it and the hair on the top of its head takes the shape of a single small horn. It also has a short tail.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Deino have the vigor and energy to bite constantly and without stopping.

Behavior

Because they are blind, Deino will bite at anything. They never stop biting, and are therefore dangerous to approach without taking precautions. They will also ram anything, ensuring that they always have bruises all over them.

As seen in The Lonely Deino, Deino may rear up on their hind legs when they are happy.

Habitat

Deino primarily lives in caves with abundant water sources.

Diet

Major appearances

Three Deino made their debut in The Lonely Deino! under the care of a Day Care owner named Bobby who was looking after them for their Trainers. Two of the Deino were very rambunctious while one of them was shy and refused to eat. Iris tried to use her experience with Dragon-types to help it feel more comfortable around strangers.

Minor appearances

A Deino made a cameo appearance in Climbing the Tower of Success!.

Trivia

  • Of all the Pokémon that evolve by level alone, Deino evolves to its final form, Hydreigon, later than any other Pokémon, evolving at level 64.
    • Deino also evolves into its second form at level 50, later than any other Pokémon that evolves by level that can evolve again.
  • Deino's evolutionary family, along with Bagon's, are the only Pokémon exclusively in the Dragon Egg Group.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Deino and its evolutionary relatives.
  • According to interviews with Sugimori in Nintendo Dream, Deino and its evolutions were originally intended to be cyborg dragons - part tank and part dragon. They were then scrapped until late in the game when they were revived and re-made to be based on Yamata no Orochi.

Origin

Deino is based on a dragon, specifically an infant form of Yamata no Orochi. Its blindness and the fact that it is only found in the Victory Road cave may mean it suffers from subterranean blindness. Deino may also be partially based on various cave salamanders due to their blindness and that they are found near bodies of water in caves.

Name origin

Deino may come from dino, a slang term for a dinosaur, and ein, German for one. Deino could also be derived from the ancient Greek word deinos, which means terrifying. It could also come from dinosaurs such as the Deinosuchus and Deinonychus. Monozu probably derives from mono, a Greek prefix meaning one, and 頭 zu, Japanese for head, its full name literally reading "one head".

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Kapuno From caput and uno.
French Solochi From Solo and orochi.
Korean 모노두 Monodu Translation of its Japanese name; from 모노 mono and 두 (頭) du.
Chinese (Mandarin) 單首龍 / 单首龙 Dānshǒulóng Literally "Single headed dragon".
