Phione (Japanese: フィオネ Phione) is a Water-type Pokémon.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, it can only be obtained by breeding Manaphy or another Phione with Ditto.

It is a member of the sea guardians with Manaphy.

Phione's status as a legendary Pokémon is often disputed, with contradiction occurring even between official sources.

Biology

Physiology

Phione is the result of breeding Manaphy with Ditto. As a result, it is very similar to Manaphy in body structure. It has a tiny body with a red gem on it. Phione has a single rudimentary foot spike and club-like arms. Phione's head is larger than the rest of its body, and extending from its eyes are two small purple circles. It has a flotation sac on its head with a single, ribbon-like antenna on it.

Gender differences

Phione is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Phione going in the drain

Phione's abilities are similar to Manaphy's, but weaker. Phione is unable to use a number of attacks that Manaphy is able to learn, most notably: Tail Glow, Heart Swap, Hyper Beam, or Giga Impact. Phione are supposedly able to create a dew that cures all ailments. Phione also has the Ability to melt its body into water and change its body into a more liquid state similar to Vaporeon.

Behavior

Like Manaphy, Phione always return to the place where they were born. This Pokémon is very energetic and playful with its parental figure Manaphy.

Habitat

Phione live in warm seas, especially around the Sinnoh region.

Trivia

  • Phione is the only Pokémon that is obtainable by breeding a legendary Pokémon.
  • Phione is taller and weighs more than its parent, Manaphy.
  • Phione can be bred not only from Manaphy, but also from a Phione. However, Phione are unable to produce Eggs that will hatch into Manaphy.
    • With that, Phione and Manaphy are the only legendary Pokémon that can be bred without the use of cheating devices.
  • Phione, Nidoran♂, Nidoran♀, Nincada, and Volbeat are the only Pokémon that can be obtained by breeding a Pokémon they cannot evolve into (as Shedinja is technically a shed shell).
  • Phione shares the exact same base stats with Glalie.
  • Phione is not found in any regional Pokédex.

Legendary status

Phione's status as a legendary Pokémon is controversial, due to the fact that it can breed and multiple individuals can be obtained. Pokémon.com's mailbag was once asked if Phione was legendary, to which the answer was initially no, but was quickly changed to yes; the whole mailbag section has since been taken down with the restructure of Pokémon.com. In the official game guide to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, which is made by The Pokémon Company International, it is stated that Phione is not legendary. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it is not referred to by the game as "rare" or "legendary", which is the case for all other legendary Pokémon in the game. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, Phione has a 100% recruit rate, is never battled, and the player is not allowed to recruit more than one to their team, all of which are traits shared by legendary Pokémon. Phione is banned from the Battle Frontier in Generation IV, as well as the Battle Subway (and later, in Black 2 and White 2, the Pokémon World Tournament) in Generation V, a rule which typically applies only to legendary Pokémon. Notably, and unlike Manaphy, Phione is not found in any regional Pokédex, a trait that is exclusive to Generation IV legendary Pokémon. In Pokémon Rumble Blast, Phione can only be unlocked once a certain amount of customers have shopped at the Toy Shop, a trait exclusive to legendary Pokémon. It was also featured in the Pokémon Power Bracket, while all other Pokémon in it were legendary Pokémon.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

Phione is probably based on sea angels, specifically clione. Clione are remarkably popular in Japanese documentaries, especially in Hokkaido, on which Sinnoh is based (this may also explain their appearance in Chocovine Town).

Name origin

Phione may be a combination of final syllable of Manaphy and clione (sea angels). Like clione, Phione is pronounced in three syllables.
