Characteristics
Defense
The Fairy type is arguably one of the best defensive types in the game. It has key resistances to the common Dark and Fighting types, giving it resistance to common moves such as Pursuit and Mach Punch; as well as the Bug type, which means a resistance to U-turn. Most of all, it also has a useful immunity to Dragon-type moves (it should be noted, however, that most Dragon-type Pokémon can learn Steel-type moves to address this problem). Its only weaknesses are to Poison and Steel, both of which are rarely used.
Offense
Fairy is almost as useful on the offensive side as well; it has three strengths, being Dragon, Fighting and Dark, all of which are other great types defensively. However, it also has three resistors, though Fire-types still struggle defensively anyway, and Poison-types are still statistically weak. As a bonus, every type that resists Fairy is weak to Ground, making a Fairy/Ground attacking combo potentially popular.
Pokémon
As of Generation VI, there are 34 Fairy-type Pokémon, or 4.5% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), tying it with Ghost as the rarest type.

Trivia
- As the Fairy type was introduced after physical and special became attributes assigned to individual moves rather than types, it is the only type without an associated damage category.
- Out of the three types added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), the most Pokémon were retroactively changed to Fairy, with 23.
- It is also the only one out of the three to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations, changing several previously pure Normal-type Pokémon like Snubbull to pure Fairy.
