Characteristics

Defense

The Fairy type is arguably one of the best defensive types in the game, along with Steel. It has a key resistance to powerful Fighting types, as well as the Dark and Bug types, which means resistance to Pursuit and U-turn. Most of all, it also has a useful immunity to Dragon-type moves. Its only weaknesses are to Poison and Steel, both of which are rarely used offensively.

Offense

Fairy is almost as useful offensively as well. It is strong against Dragon, Fighting, and Dark, all of which are otherwise great types defensively. Though weak against Fire, Poison, and Steel, Fire types struggle defensively and Poison types are statistically weak. Additionally, every type that resists Fairy is weak to Ground, making Fairy types with Ground-type attacks potentially popular.

Pokémon

As of Generation VI, there are 34 Fairy-type Pokémon, or 4.7% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), tying it with Ghost as the rarest type.

Trivia

  • As the Fairy type was introduced after physical and special became attributes assigned to individual moves rather than types, it is the only type that has never had an associated damage category.
  • More Pokémon were changed to Fairy than either of the other types added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), with 22. Also, more moves were changed to Fairy, with three.
    • It is also the only one out of the three to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations, changing several previously pure Normal-type Pokémon like Snubbull to pure Fairy.
    • Every move changed to Fairy-type was introduced in Generation II.
  • Every type that resists Fairy also resists Grass.
