Splash (Japanese: はねる Hop) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation II, it was the signature move of Magikarp. It has no effect whatsoever in the core series games.
Effect
Core series
Generation I
Splash has no effect whatsoever. After selecting the move, it will simply show a dipping animation and then the message "No effect!"
Generation II
Splash's message was changed to "But nothing happened."
Generation III
Splash's message was slightly changed to "But nothing happened!"
Generation IV and on
Splash cannot be used while Gravity is in effect.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon
The user will move to a random different tile one ratio away. If the user comes into contact with an opponent, both Pokémon receive 5 damage.
Pokémon Conquest
Splash has no area of effect or effect on the user, and thus does nothing but show an animation. However, the user can choose which direction to perform it in. This has no effect on the move itself, but leaves the user facing the same direction, whereas waiting the turn would not allow the user to change their facing. Unlike most moves in Pokémon Conquest, Splash can be used even if it would have no target (presumably because it never does).

In other generations
Trivia
- While its English name suggests an association with water, its Japanese name, はねる haneru, can mean both splash and hop, but usually the latter. This explains why the move can be learned by Pokémon such as Spoink and Hoppip—species who have no association with water but are known for hopping or jumping—and why it is disabled by Gravity. Its somewhat misleading English name is likely due to its initial exclusivity to Magikarp.
- In the anime, Splash is the most common result of Metronome.
- All Pokémon that can learn Splash by level up learn it at Level 1.
- Splash and the event-exclusive moves Celebrate and Hold Hands are the only moves in the core series Pokémon games that have no effect whatsoever.
