Cyndaquil (Japanese: ヒノアラシ Hinoarashi) is a Fire-type Pokémon. Along with Chikorita and Totodile, it is one of the three starter Pokémon available at the beginning of the Generation II games. It is also available in Pokémon Emerald as an award for catching the first 200 Pokémon in the Hoenn Pokédex.
Cyndaquil comes with the Ability Blaze, which increases the power of Fire-type attacks by 50% once the Pokémon has less than one-third of its maximum HP.
Cyndaquil evolves into Quilava starting at Level 14, then into Typhlosion starting at Level 36.
Biology
Cyndaquil is a shy and timid Pokémon. It lives in groups and tends to hide in dangerous situations. Most Cyndaquil, like Ash's, are inexperienced at start and don't know its strengths and weaknesses.
Physiology
Its head is covered in a bluish top and a milky bottom. It has eyes that resemble those of Brock's. It has 4 spots where the flames erupt. It also has no nails/claws on its front paws and a single nail on its back feet.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Cyndaquil is capable of defending itself by using the fire on its back. The fire grows more powerful as the Cyndaquil gets angrier or more defensive.
Behavior
Habitat
Cyndaquil can adapt to many habitats, however, most are found in the care of Trainers, having been their starter Pokémon. Being a Template:Type2 Pokémon, they prefer hotter areas.
Diet
Main article: Pokémon food
In the anime
Cyndaquil first appeared in the anime in Don't Touch That 'Dile as one of the three possible starters in Professor Elm's lab.
Ash Ketchum captured a Cyndaquil in Good 'Quil Hunting. During its early days on Ash's team, Cyndaquil was lazy and easily tired-out (e.g. waiting a while for the flames on its back to ignite so it could use Template:Type2 attacks). Eventually, Ash's Cyndaquil got over its shortcomings. Ash left his Cyndaquil, along with the rest of his Johto team, (save for Pikachu) at Professor Oak's lab when he set out for Hoenn.
Jimmy chose Cyndaquil as his starter Pokémon. By The Legend of Thunder!, it had become a Typhlosion.
Pike Queen Lucy has a pet Cyndaquil.
In the manga
In Pokémon Adventures (aka Pokémon Special) Gold took the Cyndaquil from Professor Elm's lab to try to catch the thief Silver. He named the Cyndaquil "Explotaro" for the explosive fire from its back.

Other appearances
When released from a Poké Ball, Cyndaquil will aim a Flamethrower diagonally towards the ground in one direction. It is one of the easiest Pokémon to avoid, however. It can also be knocked off the screen.
Trophy information
Cyndaquil frighten easily, so they're often found curled up in balls. When threatened, they flare the flames on their backs to drive off enemies. Cyndaquil was one of the three Pokémon that trainers could choose from at the beginning of Pokémon Silver, Gold, and Crystal. No one knows if their eyes are open.

NPC appearances
- Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Hitting Cyndaquil will knock it back. After a few hits, Cyndaquil will knocked into the Egg stand and the flame on its back will start heating the egg. Hitting Cyndaquil one more time will cause the egg to hatch and the player will have a chance to catch the newly hatched Pokémon.

Trivia
- Cyndaquil is the only Pokémon that was not introduced in Generation I that can legally have Submission. Despite this, it can only learn it by breeding during Generation II.
- Cyndaquil's shiny form varies from Generation 2 to the other Generations.
Origin
Its appearance is based on the echidna.
Name origin
Cyndaquil's name is a combination of the words cinder, meaning ashes, and quill, referring to needlelike hairs. Hinoarashi could be taken to mean 火の嵐, storm of fire, but it is likely to also be based on 山荒 yama-arashi, porcupine. Its German name, Feurigel, comes from Feuer and Igel. Its French name, Hericendre, comes from hérisson and cendre.
