Release information
Sword & Shield Series
This card was first released in each of the Japanese V Starter Sets. The English print was first released in the Sword & Shield expansion as a Holofoil, along with Full Art and Secret Rainbow Rare prints. The Regular print features artwork by Yusuke Ohmura, while the Full Art and Secret prints feature artwork by kirisAki. All three Sword & Shield prints originate from the Japanese Sword expansion. Non Holofoil versions of the Regular print were included in the Sword & Shield and Rebel Clash Build & Battle Boxes as well as every Theme Deck of the Sword & Shield Series.
Another new print with artwork by Yusuke Kozaki featuring Professor Willow was released in the summer of 2021 around the world as part of a promotion to celebrate Pokémon GO's fifth anniversary, the 25th anniversary of the Trading Card Game, and as the first collaboration between Pokémon GO and the TCG. Each individual card had a special promotional code printed below its effect that allowed players to participate in Special Research in Pokémon GO.[1][2]
The Regular Professor Sada and Professor Turo prints were also reprinted as one of seven SV-P Promotional cards available in Pokémon Card Gym Promo Card Pack 7, which was distributed at Pokémon Card Gym venues able to do so from July 19, 2024.[3] These Gym Promo Card Pack prints feature the Pokémon Card Gym logo.

Professor Magnolia Regular print Illus. Yusuke Ohmura
This card's effect is identical to Professor Juniper and Professor Sycamore. As such, it was ruled that a deck may only contain one of the three.
Professor's Research was specifically named to prevent the need for future rulings such as this for subsequent prints featuring different Professors.[4] The name of the specific Professor on each printing of this card is printed in the upper right corner.
The Professor Oak Regular print of this card was featured in the Illust StoryIS02, Professor's Research.
Origin
The Sword & Shield prints feature Professor Magnolia, the resident Pokémon Professor of the Galar region. The exterior of Professor Magnolia's laboratory is featured in the Regular print's illustration, while the interior is featured in the Full Art print's illustration.
The Shining Fates and SWSH152 prints feature Professor Juniper, the resident Pokémon Professor of the Unova region. The interior of Professor Juniper's laboratory is featured in the Shining Fates print's illustration.
The SWSH178 and Pokémon GO prints feature Professor Willow, the Pokémon Professor in Pokémon GO. Meltan, which was first discovered in Pokémon GO, is featured in the illustrations of both prints.
