Trivia

  • Torkoal is the only non-legendary Fire-type with no evolutionary relatives.
  • Despite being based on a tortoise, it is unable to breed with other tortoise and turtle Pokémon like Blastoise or Torterra, since it belongs to a different egg group.
  • Torkoal is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon to learn a Template:Type2 move by level up—Withdraw.
  • There is a minor error in the second frame of Torkoal's Emerald animation: Instead of being colored red, the interior of Torkoal's shell is colored a dull orange.

Origin

Torkoal is essentially a tortoise with a furnace within its shell.

Name origin

Torkoal's name is a combination of tortoise and a coal. Its Japanese name appears to also be a combination of these two words.

In other languages

  • German: Qurtel
  • French: Chartor - From charbon (coal) and tortue (tortoise).
  • Korean: 코터스 Cotoise
