Cliff Edge Gate

Cliff Edge Gate

Cliff Edge Gate is a small cavern located on the same landmass as Cianwood City. The cavern houses an information desk and a large poster promoting the newly-opened Safari Zone. Though initially accessible on the first visit to Cianwood City, the upper area was blocked off by construction workers. By the time Amphy is healed and Olivine City's lighthouse is restored, the workers have completed their job and left the area. The path climbs westward to the cliffs of Route 47.

Catch Up with Chuck

When you visit with the Blue OrbHG / Red OrbSS in hand, you find Chuck just inside the entrance. He notices you right away, but is surprised to see you here. He wonders aloud if you are on the way to the Embedded Tower, and warns that the difficult road ahead requires the use of Rock Climb and Surf. Seeing that you have defeated all of Kanto's Gym Leaders as well, he realizes that there is nothing to worry about and wishes you well on your travels.

Route 47 is a difficult trail that runs westward from Cliff Edge Gate. It is a treacherous route, with the path carved directly into the cliffside. The upper level leads northwestward to Route 48, while the lower level hides a mysterious set of ruins known as the Embedded Tower.

Middle level

After emerging from Cliff Edge Gate, travelers find themselves atop a cliff on the route's east side. Move westward to battle Hiker Devin near the entrance to Cliff Cave. A short detour across the nearby bridge leads to Camper Grant and a Revive.

Cliff Cave

Cliff Cave is a tiny cavern that provides access to the area's three levels.

2F

There are two ladders inside Cliff Cave, one leading up and the other down.

Lower level

The lower level emerges on a small beach. The eastern waterfall leads to the route's only patch of tall grass. The western waterfall leads to a clearing with a White Flute. Scale the rugged cliffs in the southwest with Rock Climb to find another cave.

A Hiker's History Lesson

A Hiker stands outside the entrance to the Embedded Tower. Speak to him to learn about the ruins hidden inside.

"Well, hello! It's said that past this hole used to be a huge tower reaching far into the sky. They say that it was a rather strange tower with half of it embedded in the cliff. It was not just a tall tower reaching up to the sky, but also reaching deep down underground! It is rumored that it even reached the bottom of the ocean! In short, the ruins used to connect the sky, the land, and the sea to each other... Most of the tower is now crumbled, and the only things that remain are the entrance and its interior, where you'll see strange patterns."

Embedded Tower

Strange patterns cover the floor, and mimic the markings on the super-ancient Pokémon found inside.

VS KyogreHG

With the Blue Orb in hand, Kyogre appears inside the tower. Its Drizzle Ability immediately summons a rainstorm that lasts for the entire battle, and boosts the power of Water-type attacks. Water Spout is a massively powerful move that grows weaker as Kyogre's health falls, but Aqua Ring allows it to restore its HP. Begin with Grass- and Electric-type attacks to wear its health down quickly, then follow up with Fire-, Water-, Ice-, and Steel-type moves to chip away at it even further.

After the battle, the Hiker enters. He explains that the legendary Pokémon is featured in the creation story of the distant Hoenn region. He realizes that the Embedded Tower was built by the people from Hoenn as a way to bind together the sea, the land, and the sky. Kyogre was not the only Pokémon described in that story, and he wonders if the ruins still have secrets to hide. He suggests that Professor Oak may be able to reveal more when shown the super-ancient Pokémon.

VS GroudonSS

With the Red Orb in hand, Groudon appears inside the tower. Its Drought Ability immediately summons intense sunlight that lasts for the entire battle, and boosts the power of Fire-type attacks. Eruption is a massively powerful move that grows weaker as Groudon's health falls, but Rest allows it to restore its HP. Begin with Water-, Grass- and Ice-type attacks to wear its health down quickly, then follow up with Poison- and Rock-type moves to chip away at it even further.

Upper level

After emerging on the upper level, battle Double Team Thom & Kae and cross the eastern bridge. On the western bridge, you find Crasher Wake again. He heard about the great waterfall near Cianwood City and decided to see it for himself. Continue across the bridge, then cross the smaller bridge to the north to reach a Lagging Tail. Battle Young Couple Duff & Eda on the way northward to Route 48.

Route 48

Route 48

Route 48 is a short path that links Route 47 and the Safari Zone Gate.

Safari Zone Gate

Safari Zone Gate

The Safari Zone Gate is a short path leading to the Safari Zone where a small, open-air market has sprung up due to the nature preserve's popularity. The southwest stall offers several kinds of Poké Ball for sale, while the southeast stall offers all kinds of vitamins.

Safari Zone

Safari Zone, Peak Area
Safari Zone, Desert Area

For $500, Trainers who visit the Safari Zone are given 30 Safari Balls and allowed to catch any Pokémon they can find. There is a catch: visitors are restricted from using their own Pokémon to weaken the wild Pokémon first. Instead, they may throw either bait or mud before attempting capture. Throwing bait makes a Pokémon less likely to run, but harder to catch; throwing a clump of mud has the opposite effect. When visitors run out of Safari Balls, the game is over. The nature preserve covers a large space, but the six areas that make it up can be customized and rearranged to suit a Trainer's needs. The specific layout may be shared by multiple players at one time through record mixing or by using the Safari Zone Link.

Owner Aptitude Test

On the first visit to the Safari Zone, you are greeted by Baoba. He wonders what you think of his brand-new nature preserve and asks if you would like to take the Owner Aptitude Test.

First Challenge

Baoba explains the first task: catch a single Geodude in the tall grass nearest the entrance and show it to him. No matter which of the ten default area layouts is in use, the Peak Area where Geodude can be found is always the first area inside the entrance. Return to Baoba with a Geodude, and he congratulates you for passing the first test. He also reveals that there is a second test that he is still preparing, and that he will give you a call when it is ready.

Second Challenge

Three gameplay hours after completing the first challenge, Baoba calls to inform you that the second test is ready. Return to the Safari Zone and speak to him to learn the second task: catch a Sandshrew and show it to him. This test will not be as easy as the first, as the goal is to familiarize Trainers with using the Area Customizer to reorder the six areas of the preserve. Sandshrew are found in the Desert Area, which is not part of the default layout and must be added with the Area Customizer.

Return to Baoba with a Sandshrew to complete the test, and he officially makes you the new Safari Zone Owner. He mentions how he has always wanted to see young people playing at the safari, and promises to continue thinking up new ways to help Trainers complete the Pokédex.

Object Arrangement

A further three gameplay hours after completing the second challenge, Baoba calls and excitedly informs you of a new attraction that he calls Object Arrangement. In each specific area, Trainers can choose from several different objects and display up to 30 at once, which can potentially draw out rarer Pokémon, Pokémon not found in the area, or Pokémon not found in the zone any other way. Initially, Trainers will have access to only 6 block items. After another three hours of gameplay, Baoba will call again and add 6 new blocks. This cycle will repeat twice more until all 24 different block items are unlocked.

Pallet Town

Oak's Lab

Return to Pallet Town and speak to the professor. He is surprised to see you, and wonders what brings you here. Realizing that you are speaking about Kyogre and Groudon, Oak explains that wherever one is found, the other must also be around, and wherever these two appear, the other Pokémon is said to appear as well. He continues, stating that according to Mr. Pokémon, Groudon only shows itself to Trainers with shining-silver spirits, while Kyogre only appears to those with golden hearts. Bringing them together will be a difficult task to do alone.

With the first of the two Pokémon captured, you must trade with another player to receive the opposite legendary Pokémon. Return with both Kyogre and Groudon, both from the Embedded Tower, and speak to the professor. He is amazed to see that you have caught the pair, and entrusts you with the Jade Orb. Oak explains that it resembles the Orb that you received from Mr. Pokémon, and has something to do with Rayquaza. He tells the legend of the titanic battles between Kyogre and Groudon, when volcanic eruptions and giant waves were common, and how Rayquaza eventually appeared from the skies to halt the battle. Oak believes that if the Embedded Tower is truly related to Kyogre and Groudon, then bringing the Jade Orb there will surely make something happen.

VS Rayquaza

With the Jade Orb in hand, Rayquaza now appears inside the tower. Unlike Kyogre and Groudon, whose Abilities trigger adverse weather conditions, Rayquaza's Air Lock Ability negates any weather effects that may occur during battle. The legendary dragon excels in both physical Attack and Special Attack. Its strongest move, Outrage, causes it to rampage for several turns before becoming confused due to fatigue. Begin with Ice-, Dragon- and Rock-type attacks to wear its health down quickly, then follow up with Grass-, Fire-, Water-, Bug-, and Fighting-type moves to chip away at it even further.
