Bidoof's Big Stand (Japanese: ビッパ、キミにきめた! Bippa, I Choose You!) is an animated short released on January 11, 2022[1] on the official Pokémon YouTube channel and Pokémon TV, and on February 9, 2022 on the official Pokémon Japanese YouTube channel.

Blurb

A bumbling Bidoof with a tendency to bite off more than it can chew finds itself between a rock and a hard place as it embarks on a journey to find its place in the world.

Plot

The Trainer and Bidoof

The story follows the trajectory of a female Bidoof. Initially, she lived in a group with others of her kind, but she couldn't fit in with the other Bidoof despite her trying, and she soon leaves the colony after angering all of them. After being rejected by some Piplup, Bidoof tried to eat an Oran Berry, though she ends up being attacked by a group of Starly and a Staraptor. This situation ends up causing Bidoof to be saved by a Trainer and his Lucario, which causes the Staraptor to flee after seeing the strength of Lucario's Aura Sphere.

After seeing the Trainer and his Lucario perform a high five, Bidoof wishes to join them, and after much insistence, the Trainer ends up giving in and capturing Bidoof for his team. However, during their journey together, the Trainer has a habit of using Bidoof to break through obstacles on the road thanks to her strong teeth and the move Rollout, usually rewarding Bidoof with an Oran Berry afterward. On one of these occasions, Bidoof is used to open a cave exit where a wild Gengar appears, and is quickly replaced by Lucario. This made Bidoof start to feel bored of doing these actions, believing that her function would be just that.

Eventually, the Trainer reaches the Pokémon League finals where his team ends up being completely defeated in a Full Battle, forcing the Trainer to use Bidoof in battle. Initially shocked to be in a real Pokémon battle, the Trainer encourages Bidoof to do her best. Bidoof manages to defeat the Golem (which had defeated his Lucario) thanks to her teeth. After the Golem's defeat, his opponent brings out a Staraptor that intimidates Bidoof and she soon fights it, only to be heavily beaten by an array of moves including Hyper Beam. Flung back to her Trainer, Bidoof doesn't give up and stands on her hind feet before using Rollout and sneezing to defeat the Staraptor, thus winning the league for herself and the Trainer, finally being given the high five she wanted when they first met.

In the short's epilogue, the Trainer is seen taking Bidoof to see her old group of her kind, taking some foods for Bidoof on a beach and taking some pictures with her.

Trivia

  • The Trainer using Bidoof to clear obstacles may be a reference to HM mules, a fandom concept referring to a designated Pokémon in a Trainer's party that is given field moves (usually taught via HMs) and is mostly only used to navigate obstacles that require field moves to clear. Bidoof and its evolution Bibarel are examples of Pokémon commonly used as HM mules.
